25.01.2022 THIS WEEK IN HISTORY SECOND WEEK OF OCTOBER OCTOBER 9th 1970: Civic Reception and Official Opening of Back to Mildura (3rd to 18th) by Governor Sir Rohan Delacombe; also several back-to-schools.... OCTOBER 10th 1970: Re-enactment of arrival of Lord Hopetoun 1891. OCTOBER 11th 1949: Pastor Martin Niemoller addresses a huge crowd at the Town Hall, and another at a University branch on a one-day visit to Mildura. OCTOBER 12th 1883: Mallee Pastoral Leases Act gazetted; to come into operation December 1st. OCTOBER 13th 1958: Express overnight goo0ds train for fruit and vegetables, dubbed the Fruit Flier, commences operation. OCTOBER 14th 1963: Opening of the Crossroads Drive-in. OCTOBER 15th 1907: Foundation stone of Carnegie Library laid by Lt-Gov Sir John Madden.

23.01.2022 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR 2021 Many of you know that this year has been a bit of a battle for everyone with Covid. With the new year looming, we wish to start 2021 with a fresh outlook! We are a community based organisation that is run by volunteers and charitable financial donations.... If you are interested in history, we are looking for volunteers! We are looking for people to help man the front desk and also help around the musuem. We have many things that need to be done!! So if you know of anyone who is interested in history and is willing to help out, please ring us on 5022 0172 and talk to one of our friendly volunteers. Any help and or donations are always welcome!

OCTOBER 17th 1917: Death of Alfred Deakin. OCTOBER 18th 1984: Official opening of Sunraysia College of TAFE by Governor Sir Brian Murray. OCTOBER 19th 1909: Switching on of the electric light by Gov Sir Thos Charmichael from Carnegie Balcony. OCTOBER 20th 1921: Mildura and Merbein Sun proclaims "C. J. De Garis bankrupt". 11.01.2022 COVID 19 UPDATE FOR HISTORICAL SOCIETY NOVEMBER 2020 WE ARE OPEN!!! Yes, we are now open, MONDAY & SATURDAY ONLY !! ... We will open from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. As we have Covid rules to adhere to, we ask that if you do come in to the Centre, to please follow the rules that have been put in place. You will need to write your name and phone number in our book, use hand sanitizer and social distance (1.5mtr). You must also wear a mask unless applicable due to health reasons. So once again we are open and here to help you with your questions on our local history. Don't forget that we also have some wonderful displays inside the Centre. We hope to see you soon!

07.01.2022 During this year of 2020, we missed a very important event. The Mildura & District Historical Society turned 65 this year!!! Happy Birthday to us!!!! Although we cannot celebrate like we would like to, we may celebrate next year instead!

05.01.2022 THIS WEEK IN HISTORY FIRST WEEK OF OCTOBER OCTOBER 1st 1887: CBL (Chaffey Brothers Limited), formed as a limited company the day before, is incorporated with capital in 35, 000 shares of 10 pounds each.... OCTOBER 2nd 1988: Renovated Church of Christ with new foyer is officially opened. OCTOBER 3rd 1925: Manfred, owned by Ben Chaffey (son of George), wins the AJC Derby in one of the most extraordinary performances ever. OCTOBER 4th 1977: Tornado and hail in Red Cliffs cause $15 million damage. OCTOBER 5th 1899: A. D. Thomson appointed Shire Engineer. OCTOBER 6th 1889: Death of Hattie, first wife of W. B. Chaffey. OCTOBER 7th 1917: Death of Rev Thos Goodwin who in August 1855 founded the Yelta Mission. Lever appointed to board of Mildura Irrigation Company. NOVEMBER 3rd 1906: Diver searches for box of coins (over $1,000 Pounds) which slipped of the 'Gem' at the wharf; found two days later. NOVEMBER 4th 1888: First service in newly-completed Ninth St Methodist Church. NOVEMBER 5th 1917: Death of Dr Thornton, first Anglican Bishop of Ballarat, whose visit to Mildura is quoted in the 'Red Book'. NOVEMBER 6th 1901: First sod of Mildura railway turned.
