24.01.2022 Good news for all our clients who are finding it tricky to get in during the week at MVH....we are re opening on Saturdays!! This Saturday will be our first. There will, however, be a few differences compared to before.... *We will not be performing the following: vaccinations, Proheart injections, cartrophen injections, or sutures out. This is because it takes much longer to see everyone while still practising social distancing, and we only have the same staff numbers on a Saturday as we did pre-Covid. * We will be running the clinic like it is during the week at present: asking you to wait in the car upon arrival and phone to let us know you are here. * Food and medication pick ups are welcome, but we cannot fill new medication requests unless they were submitted before 12pm on Friday. Thanks for bearing with us as we navigate this tricky time. *Photo is of Matilda - owned by Dr Alex - eating something she shouldn’t be. If you find yourself in this situation this Saturday morning we will happily see you for a routine consult!

23.01.2022 MVH would like to thank all of our clients for being so patient, trusting and understanding this year as we've been navigating our industry Covid protocols. You have put up with being separated from your pets, a very non-pandemic ready phone system and vets attempting to use the EFTPOS machines. These protocols have allowed us to stay open and safe. However seeing as it's no longer Sicktoria and donuts are aplenty, we are happy to say that soon we'll be bringing ya'll back in! There will still be some rules in place to tick the social distancing boxes and masks are required, but we will post some more info this week as we work the details out. As they're saying in the US right now, cheers cheers get on the beers.

23.01.2022 Source number requirement There are changes to the prescribed identifying information required to be collected when implanting a microchip into a cat or dog, effective from 1 July 2020. The law currently requires any person who advertises the sale or giving away of dogs and cats, including puppies and kittens, to include a source number on their advertisement, along with the animal’s microchip number.... This applies to registered breeding domestic animal businesses, shelters, pounds, pet shops, recreational breeders, micro breeders and any person or organisation who advertises dogs, cats, puppies and kittens for sale or to give away. An authorised implanter must collect and include a source number as part of the microchip registration form for all dogs and cats born from 1 July 2020. A failure to do so may incur penalties under the Domestic Animals Regulations 2015. A client must provide a source number for a dog or cat born after 1 July 2020 to enable an authorised implanter to implant it with a microchip. No source number, no microchip. MVH will ask you for the source number at the time of booking, please have this available. If you have not already applied for a source number at the time of booking, you will be required to have completed your application prior to the consult. To obtain a source number, go to..... https://per.animalwelfare.vic.gov.au/

17.01.2022 Highly recommend.

17.01.2022 We have had 3 cases of Canine Parvovirus in the past week. Dogs that develop the disease show signs of the illness within three to seven days. The signs may include lethargy, vomiting, fever, and diarrhea (usually bloody). Generally, the first sign of Parvo is lethargy. Secondary signs are loss of weight and appetite or diarrhea followed by vomiting, resulting in dehydration. Dogs have a distinctive odor in the later stages of the infection. The white blood cell level f...alls, further weakening the dog. Any or all of these factors can lead to shock and death. Survival rate depends on how quickly Parvo is diagnosed, the age of the dog, and how aggressive the treatment is. Treatment usually involves extensive hospitalisation, due to severe dehydration and potential damage to the intestines and bone marrow. Prevention of Parvo is really as simple as a vaccination.

09.01.2022 If you’re the owner of a deep-chested dog - German Shepherd, Boxer, Dobermann, Great Dane, to name a few - it is so important to familiarise yourself with the signs of gastric dilation volvulus (GDV). 06.01.2022 No sleeping in tomorrow Bad clock!

05.01.2022 Sometimes our pets do silly things! Meet Moe, a 3 year old gentle giant who belongs to one of our head nurses, Leander. Moe originally came from SARG and has always been a healthy boy - he has even donated blood to help sick patients, when needed. ... On Friday night Moe didn’t want his tea. By Saturday, he was even sicker. Xrays looked suspicious so when he still wasn’t eating today, a decision was made to perform an exploratory laparotomy and have a look for a possible foreign body. What we discovered could only happen to a staff dog: Moe had eaten some Vetwrap bandaging material, and one end of this had become stuck in his stomach, while the rest of the long piece had travelled through almost to his large intestine! The effect of a linear foreign body like this is devastating to the intestinal tract, as it bunches up, known as plication, looking a bit like a hair scrunchie. Luckily for Moe, we got in before any irreversible damage had occurred. While our fingers are very much still crossed, we anticipate that he should make a full recovery. Let’s hope he stays well away from the first aid box from now on!

04.01.2022 Due to recent developments regarding COVID-19, Mildura Veterinary Hospital have implemented the following protocol in order to keep our clients, pets and staff safe. Enabling us to continue to provide our veterinary service at this time. As of Monday March 23rd, we will not be allowing clients within our building unless requested by the veterinarian. We ask that you please remain in your car and phone the practice on your arrival. When available our veterinarian will call yo...u back and take a history, symptoms and general consult information. They will then come and take your pet from your car and will proceed to the consult room with your pet while you wait in your car. All physical animal assessments will be done without you present, however, communication will be available at all times. Pets for grooming as above, a nurse will collect from your car. This protocol also stands for pets being admitted for surgery, please stay in your car, a nurse will be with you as soon as possible. Our vets and nurses may choose to wear gloves and masks when communicating with you in the car park, we certainly do not wish to offend, we are just doing all we can to keep yourself and our staff safe. Please phone ahead to order required prescription medicine repeats or food, worming and flea control in advance, so we can arrange to have them ready for you without the need to wait. The nurses will not be taking requests on a face to face basis, you will need to call from outside of the building. All payment is to be contactless unless this is unavoidable. New restrictions are being introduced by the Victorian Government that require everyone across Victorian wear a face mask or a face covering when outside their home from 11:59pm Sunday night August 2nd, 2020. So you all get to be as fashionable as we are MVH will require all clients presenting to the practice in their cars to be wearing a mask/face covering while in direct contact with our staff. A face mask includes any paper or textile covering designed or made to be worn over the nose and mouth to protect the wearer. It does not have to be medical grade and you can make your own. We understand that there may be a shortage of masks to purchase for a short period of time, in this case, instructions on how to make a mask are on the dhhs website - How to make a mask. We are working hard to ensure we can continue to provide complete veterinary care. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
