15.09.2021 Hearturday is tomorrow! On Australia Day 2019, Hearturday Co-founder, Katrina Umback’s 42-year-old husband, Scott Umback, unexpectedly had a heart attack and died. In the weeks following his death, Katrina sought the help of the Heart Foundation to understand how something like this could happen to a fit, healthy young man. Ms Umback said through my conversations with the Heart Foundation I discovered heart disease is the biggest the killer of Australians. 48 Australians die... every day from heart disease. Scott had recently had his heart health checked and nothing was detected. Struggling to understand this, the Heart Foundation asked me if Scott had an angiogram as part of his heart health check. He hadn't. They explained that an angiogram is the gold standard test to see if there are any blockages in your arteries. With thanks to studies conducted by the Heart Foundation we know 73.7% of deaths in Northwest Victoria are as a result of coronary heart disease, ranking our region number two in Victoria and only by 0.2%. The National Rural Health Alliance reported in 2017 that the likelihood of death from heart disease is 60% higher in regional and rural Australia than in metropolitan Australia, she said. Together with co-founder and owner/radio broadcaster of goRadio.Live, Neil Butler, we will be hosting a 12 hour radio-a-thon on from 12noon on Hearturday, aka Saturday 23rd October. We are doing this to raise $10,000 for the Heart Foundation as well as much needed awareness about heart disease as it is the biggest killer of Australians. During each of the first eight hours, there will a 10 to 15 minute interview with an expert in heart health or someone who has a lived experience of heart health. From 8:00pm until midnight, there will be an 80s Music Request Party celebrating Scott’s favourite musical decade. Anyone who donates $50 or more in a single donation leading up to, or on Hearturday, will be able to request a song for the 80s Music Party playlist plus a shout out or dedication, Ms. Umback added. For further information and to get involved in Hearturday, visit > https://www.hearturday.com.au See more
