14.01.2022 "Glow worms" - Glow worms are bioluminescent, meaning they produce and emit light naturally from an organ near their tails that is similar to a human kidney. The bioluminescence is created through a reaction of an enzyme called luciferase (from the Latin lucifer, "light-bearer") and a variety of other chemicals that cause this natural, blue-green glow. The insects spend about nine months as larvae and must absorb as much food as they can before they metamorphose. Adult fungu...s gnats resemble mosquitoes and do not have mouths. They live for just a few days, perishing shortly after mating and laying eggs. Mile Manev Photography
