21.01.2022 In this video you’ll learn: other ways to day ‘sweat a lot’ synonyms for ‘sweaty’ words related to sweat other meanings of the verb sweat... After pigging out on the weekend I went to the gym for some cardio. I spent 1h07m on the stair climber such was my feeling of guilt!!! It was a scorcher of day and the fan in the area I was wasn’t working... That was the result ‘Melted Milene’! I almost disintegrated but I survived. I sweat it all out, mission accomplished! Your mission now is to use one of the words in a sentence. Write it in the comments. If you have a question, just ask me, I’m more than happy to help.

18.01.2022 Quiet is a word that English students learn early in their studies. In today's blog post we are going to look at some more specific and subtle ways of talking about quietness and silence. Read more here: http://ow.ly/WWmE50CnHjq

06.01.2022 In this video you’ll read a joke I posted on my stories the other day along with the explanation of the vocabulary in it. (Good for revision if you’ve already seen it!) Then I comment on what may be the reasons why some people do not understand jokes in English. (00:47) Lack of vocabulary As in the example of ‘scarecrow’ or hay’. ... Poor listening skills/pronunciation As in the words ‘hay’ and ‘hey’ or ‘ genes’ and ‘jeans’ Lack of cultural awareness (which I forgot to mention in the video, by the way!) Some jokes make fun of the customs of the people or geographical aspects of a country, such as in the examples that follow. Americans: Drink weak, pissy-tasting beer.Canadians: Drink strong, pissy-tasting beer.Brits: Drink warm, beery-tasting piss.Aussies: Drink anything with alcohol in it. Canadians: Endure bitterly cold winters and are proud of it.Brits: Endure oppressively wet and dreary winters and are proud of it.Americans: Don't have to do either, and couldn't care less.Aussies: Don't understand what inclement weather means. If it takes an IQ of 60 to tie shoelaces, why do so many Australians wear thongs? (Actually, where I live I see them walking around barefoot!) In the three cases above, if you don’t know much about the culture of those English-speaking countries, you won’t understand them, hence you won’t find them funny. Depending on the joke, one of the elements mentioned before - knowledge of the vocabulary, good listening/pronunciation skills or cultural awareness - may be more relevant to the understanding of what’s read or told than the other. Well, as I usually say there’s a lot more to it! I could dig much deeper into it, but that was just a short and sweet overview of the topic. Do you like jokes? Are you a good joke teller? Can you tell me one? I challenge you to make me laugh. Write it in the comments.

02.01.2022 Here is some real life English. Those who know me, know that I am always on the look out for language used in real life (not just in textbooks) to share some knowledge with you. Actually, I am always avidly reading signs wherever I go, reading food labels, paying attention to advertisements of all sorts on the radio, TV and hoardings etc because I am very curious and analytical, not just because I am a teacher and want to use ‘authentic material’ to teach. It’s my nature, ...it’s deeply ingrained in me! I can’t help it! I just can’t stop I just can’t stop from Closer, song by Neyo) And here is my TIP TO YOU: never ever think you’re done or that the journey is over. There’s always room for improvement! There’s always something to be learnt. You can only get better, day by day, year after year... you’ve just got to be curious and be attentive to the world around you. Even if you know the meaning of a word, you understand the message, please, take 5 minutes to check a good monolingual dictionary to see if that word has another meaning or can be used in a different way, as an adjective, as a verb, as noun. Check the collocations with that word. Read the examples. I’m sure will find something you didn’t know about it. Learning is fun! Enjoy the process! #neverstoplearning #neverstopimproving #neverstopgrowing #neverstopgrinding #learningisfun #foreverastudent #enjoytheprocess #englishiseverywhere #theenglisharoundyou
