23.01.2022 YWAM helps out Village again!! Once again the Youth With A Mission (YWAM) team have been a tremendous help to the Miles Historical Village Museum this last week. After days of strong winds the Village was covered in leaves and fallen branches. The team of Hayden Schaffuer, Nathan Crooy, Molly Jones, Ryan Kiper and Keely Lock from the USA; Marcus Lock and Ayden Burger from Canada, Twinkee Polius from the Caribbean and Aaron Foo from Singapore were fantastic with the removal ...of massive amounts of leaves from the main street, roof gutters and behind and between buildings. They cleaned handrails and sills, machinery as well as cobwebbing the outsides of the buildings and vacuuming around the shed machinery. We were down 3 staff members last week so their help was truly a saviour for our organization. 23.01.2022 Thanks again to another great team of Youth With A Mission (YWAM) people. They did a great job raking and removing debris from the main street of the Village as well as sanding back, repairing and painting some aging doors; relocating metal doors, sweeping out our buildings and wiping down counters and display cases. They have travelled out from Brisbane to help out in our community. We are so fortunate to have YWAM groups continue to volunteer and help us at the Village. Some have been away from their homes in Canada and USA for many months. This vehicle has recently been found in Chinchilla, in very bad repair. Leo Bishop was involved with the Museum for many years and we acknowledge the contributions made by Leo in the early years of the Museum's foundation. The slab kitchen donated from his property "Riverlea" in Condamine, being one of the first buildings to form the Museum, will remain a longstanding tribute. Brian and Annie absolutely loved the Norman Donpon Lapidary display at the Museum and decided to extend their stay. What was to be a 3 day visit turned into 6 nights at the Juandah Historical Site in Wandoan. Being mad keen rock collectors, we introduced them to one of our local rock hounds, who in turn extended his local knowledge and hospitality to this lovely couple. 03.01.2022 It was a pleasure to welcome John & Mary Ware (nee Faros) to the Village this week. Mary's grandmother, Mrs Mary Faros owned and operated the first Greek Cafe in Miles, the "Red Rose Cafe" from 1925 - 1930. The cafe was built by Jack Faros in Train Street, now known as Murilla Street. They then moved to Clermont where Mary's son, James, operated their cafe until 1992. A replica of the Red Rose Cafe was built at the Village in 1984 to honour the early Greek Cafe proprietors.... Built by Les Rose and Co with the assistance and donations from many. The Cafe was officially opened on 15 September 1984 - photo of Mrs Faros, her daughter Anna, Mr George Kyprios, Mr Alex Freeleagus (Greek Consulate), Mrs Marie Kyprios and Joyce Davidson (President). 01.01.2022 Remembering Rosie. Many of our visitors will have fond memories of Rosie, our resident Village cat greeting them in reception and accompanying them on their wander around the Village. Rosie generally picked one lucky family/couple each day to walk with and loved getting pats and attention. When she wasn’t giving guided tours, Rosie could be found sleeping in one of her favourite spots - in the History room where she was totally spoilt , on the roof of, or in the back of the Durant. Rosie has lived at the Village since a kitten and was a constant companion of Hilda Heffernan for many years. It was lovely to reignite their friendship on a recent visit by Hilda. Sadly we had to say goodbye to Rosie on 24/11/2020. Rosie will forever be fondly remembered by all who visited, worked and volunteered at the Village. RIP Rosie
