21.01.2022 Nature drawing. This morning the children sat around a tough tray with some sand in it, I asked the children if they could draw something in the sand with their fingers, they began to explore using their sense of touch, making swirls, lines, circles etc discussing what the sand felt like under our finger tips, is rough or smooth? Cold or warm? The children sat together sharing the space with the kindy’s as they asked to join in too, looking at each other’s creations using their recall memory and imagination to create and explore. #lifelonglearning #middleswan #sensoryplay

17.01.2022 Next week book in fast !! DRESS UP all week, our theme is READING IS A SUPERPOWER !!! Every kid dreams of being a superhero (and many adults too!). Defeating baddies, saving the world, and all of it done in a darn snazzy outfit. And no superhero is complete without a superpower: some can fly, some are part animal, some have super-human strength.... Of course, in the real world, none of this is possible. But there is one thing that can give kids the power for a better start in life its the simple task of teaching kids to read. Traditionally, reading has had rather a serious reputation. But if its going to be promoted to a superpower status, its got to get a little pow and bam happening.

13.01.2022 HEAD BANDS ON BABIES Sarah here (paediatric nurse & CPR Kids founder). Let me tell you a (true) story. I was shopping at the supermarket a little while ago (pre...COVID) when I saw a mum shopping with her young bub. All I could see was bubs legs and body, the hood of the pram was covering her face. I noticed that she was kicking her legs furiously, which I thought was a little strange so I ducked down a bit to look at her face, from an acceptable distance that a stranger should maintain from someone elses baby! What I saw sent a shock of adrenaline through me - I jumped straight over and grabbed mums arm (she was just browsing the shelves, one hand on the pram) and at the same time flipped back the hood - the head band that the baby was wearing had slipped down over her nose and mouth, and she was turning a dusky purple colour. Mum and I seemed to simultaneously reach down and pulled the head band off her nose and mouth, and bub immediately let out a huge cry. Its a bit of a blur, but I remember mum being stunned about what was happening. She picked up her baby who continued to cry for a bit then settled down, perfectly fine after the ordeal. Mum wasnt so fine. Mum was crying, saying that she knew not to let bub sleep with the headband on, but didnt realise there would be any danger from having the headband on whilst awake. However, just head movement or rubbing can move a headband down over the face. They are fine for a photo or while being held by someone, but please dont leave a headband on a baby if they arent close, awake and in direct active supervision. And of course, NEVER when sleeping. Also be aware of any embellishments that an older baby or toddler may pull off and put in their mouth #choking . please note the picture below is a stock photo, not of the child in the story. . #newborn #newbornphotography #newbornphotographer #infant #babies #babiesofinstagram #baby #newbornbaby #parenting #pregnancy #family #parenthood #mumlife #breastfeeding #maternity #motherhoodunplugged #pregnant #mother #thatsdarling #babybump #motherhoodrising #motherhoodthroughinstagram #babyshower #babyboy #babygirl #preggo #newbaby

07.01.2022 FUN FACTS ABOUT SNAILS Did you know ? Snails are found all over the world. Snail-like animals that naturally lack a shell, or have only an internal shell, are mostly called slugs.... The lifespan of snails depends on their habitat and the species. Some of them only live for about 1 to 3 years. However, others can live up to 25 years old. Our children have showed a big interest in bugs, extending on the childrens interests we are investigating snails. Some fun facts that we have learnt. #LifelongLearning #Middleswan #Bugs #FunFacts

02.01.2022 Today the toddlers did an experiment with a red cabbage, some vinegar and bicarb soda, we all sat around the table with two clear cups/containers in front of us, first we observed the colour of the juice, what colour is it? Opal thought it looked a bit red, we then went on to discuss what may happen when we add the vinegar, will it change colour? Opal helped pour in the vinegar concentrating very hard to get it into the cup, as she poured the vinegar in it changed colours! I...t went from purple to pink! We compared the colour change to the untouched juice to see how different they are, we then went onto the bicarb soda, Mr A was keen to help pour it in and stir it about using his fine motor skills to combine the two liquids, as he was doing so we noticed the colour changing from purple to blue! Miss Maddii then thought, what would happen if we mixed the two together? What a great idea! Maddii assisted Georgia with pouring the bicarb soda mix into the vinegar mix, as we did it started to turn a light purple and it became a volcano! This was caused from the chemical reaction between the bicarb soda and vinegar. The purple cabbage juice turns red when it mixes with something acidic and turns green when it mixes with something basic. Red cabbage juice is considered to be an indicator because it shows us something about the chemical composition of other substances. https://www.stevespanglerscience.com//red-cabbage-chemist/
