25.01.2022 The Queensland Productivity Commission report came back today with the strongest stance yet for drug decriminalisation https://www.abc.net.au//drug-offences-penalties-q/11918390 joining academics and former police officers who say that drug criminalisation has failed utterly. It's stunning that legalising marijuana alone could reduce prison populations by 20-30% over the next 5 years, which would be a particularly powerful policy stance given that prison populations rose by 40.2% in just the past few years... and yet Premier Palaszczuk still refuses to support this initiative even as Canberra's legalisation came into force today!

22.01.2022 "Climate normals" are 30-year averages that meteorologists and climatologists use as a baseline to describe daily, monthly, and yearly conditions as being warme...r or cooler, wetter or drier than average. Every decade, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) updates the climate averages: and this year, the changes resulting from the update to using 1991-2020 as "normal" is huge. Why? Because the planet has warmed so much in the last decade. Seven out of the last 10 years have been the warmest on record, and as a whole the last decade was the warmest in human history. Because of these updates, some places have shifted into entirely new climate zones. For example, Fairbanks, Alaska is now considered to be in the "warm summer continental zone" rather than "sub-Arctic" (!) Read more:

18.01.2022 This weekend is the Buddha's Birthday Festival at the Chung Tian Chinese Buddhist Temple in Underwood. I visited today and practiced my Sutra Calligraphy, but attendees can also watch traditional and community performances, discover the Buddha's Light Scout Group environmental programs and games for kids, meditate, visit the tea house or sample traditional Chinese food and of course learn more about the life and teachings of the Buddha. We don't have to be religious to appre...ciate the message or beauty in religions. The Buddha teaches a simple message that we should have good thoughts, speak good words and do good acts. And in the Mahayana Buddhist tradition, doing these three things will reduce suffering in the world. More info about this free event can be found here, it's final day is tomorrow from 9-5 AEST https://www.facebook.com/events/2972655506345306

18.01.2022 I'm confused at how anyone expected the LNP to win the Queensland state election. Was it ALP loyalists, panicking at their support bleeding to the Greens? Was it southerners trying to stay relevant to an increasingly independant Queensland? Image credit to the skunkworks at DS #qldpol #qldvotes

07.01.2022 The RBA abandoned it's target of full (100%) employment decades ago. All that's left is "full" employment (whatever the market decides is an ideal maximum but typically around 90-95% to keep wages low). But now they want to try and reduce unemployment below 5% AND start targetting the epidemic of underemployment affecting younger Australians? Who was telling them all this time that low wages and low hours would come back to bite us all in the ass? The market is optimised fo...r short term individual gain at the expense of society.
