20.01.2022 Thanks to everyone for jumping in to help, especially Grandma Margie from The Goomeri Bakery for making a cameo appearance for morning tea and lunch, and also to Marianne for her baking session, baking Evie's birthday cake! Today's lunch: Coconut & Dill Barramundi, Sweet Potato Mash, and mixed vegetables.
18.01.2022 I love when you come fresh off the back of an awesome day like we just enjoyed with Michelle Scheu, straight into an awesome morning experience within your own space. Michelle is an advocate for allowing children to play, and leave the formal learning for later. Less sight words and worksheets, more play with literacy and numeracy. I loved watching this morning as children played on paper, creating stories, and using inspiration from the world around them. Neave and Charlotte... were making signs that matched a song they had been working on, which Neave then sang for us. Xavier told me that he learned how to write by watching other people write. Toward the end, just before morning tea, we put all of our pictures together to make a story. Neave's crow flew down and walked across my paper, but was eaten by the snake that Theodore had drawn. Theodore was already working on another picture and added to the story "... and then the snake came to the ocean and the shark ate the snake." Xavier then added his creative writing piece into the mix, saying that it was a sign saying "No snakes allowed to cross the road." At the end I loved that the boys counted and put away all of my new metallic markers, in the correct colour order, back into the box. The markers had really cool names, like Green Machine and Black Iron, which we read together. I knew all of the markers were there as Theodore had counted and checked frequently during his time drawing at the table, to make sure that they were all there. Plenty of organic 'Math' and 'English' happening all day long 'round these parts ;)

11.01.2022 Recently Beau brought in a small fabric bandage from home and told me he wanted to put it in our first aid kit that we take to the forest. The following day just as we were leaving for our weekly Forest Dwellers adventure Angus arrived with a toy snake. I immediately thought how we could incorporate Beau's bandage and the toy snake into a real life learning experience and suggested that we might practice what to do if we did happen to encounter a snake whilst at the forest ....Continue reading

10.01.2022 Graduation 2020: This year will be remembered for our ability to carry on by doing things a little differently.Planning to say farewell to our Library children this year certainly involved lots of organising around Covid restrictions etc . Rather than have our usual large group gathering we decided to offer a small group celebration every day this week. What a fun week it's been! It was so lovely to see just how excited the children were upon receiving their special trophi...es and I know there were a few tears shed as we listened to the funny stories and special memories of what makes each Library child unique. Thank you for choosing Milford Lodge for your child's early education and care.We have been privileged to share these special formative years. Our love and hopes for a happy and healthy future go with you ,there will always be a warm welcome at Grandma's House for you so please remember to visit from time to time . 07.01.2022 So this weekend was meant to be Village Ways V. Cancelled due to Covid. But Kylie from Tumble Tots Kindergarten kept their accommodation booking at Dusty Hill Vineyard with all intentions of having an amazing weekend either way. I'm so glad she did, and that we decided to head out to meet up. What an amazing dedicated team they are. They spent most of their weekend immersed in documentation and reflection, with only a few breaks for supporting small local businesses like The Goomeri Bakery and That's Nice Antiques & Secondhand. Was lovely that Jenny from St John's Kindergarten - Kingaroy came to meet up also. It's always lovely to share time with like minded Early Childhood folk <3

06.01.2022 It is always an honour and privilege to offer tours to either perspective families or fellow colleagues from other services .Even though it was my RDO I throughly enjoyed my morning at Milford seeing what we do on a daily basis through a different lens ~ Nancy Such lovely feedback from our TAFE visitors today ''Beautiful day to explore Milford Lodge and learn about the excellent work they do with children. Our Diploma students were learning about the beautiful environments... and spaces for play. Thank you so much Nancy for all your time and care, and Molly for sharing your story with us. We learnt so much from your service. We saw calm and very confident children, who were perfectly engaged in their learning... making choices, exploring, connecting, leading, being creative and obviously belonging to their home away from home. Your environments are so beautiful we just wanted to stay!!! Hope we can come back soon! X' See more

05.01.2022 Thanks to Steph (Theodore's mum) for sharing this exciting news for a new book from Michael Nagel, from our local University of the Sunshine Coast. "With this book, I am challenging society’s apparent war on boyishness, and encouraging educators and parents to expand their understanding of the male brain to better support the boys in their lives, Dr Nagel said.

04.01.2022 Flashback. (Not too long ago....) I shared this photograph during a keynote with Narelle (Bribie Island Community Kindergarten) a few years ago at our own Village Ways (Conference). The content began with allowing children to freedom to play across the service, choosing where they want to play, what they want to play with, who they want to play with, and most importantly which adult they want to be with. (Key Educator Approach / allowing the child to choose their key educato...r). Jill was in the School House at this time (toddler age) and Hartley was in the Library (Kindergarten) but they still shared many meals together that year. So, so, special. I love this photograph <3 See more
03.01.2022 Thank you Bribie Island Kindergarten for sharing this insightful video regarding formal schooling. It is very timely as we hosted a wonderful parent information night last Tuesday with special guest Michelle Scheu from Chevallum State School . We discussed at length what it means to be ''Really Ready for School '' .
03.01.2022 We love that no two days are ever the same at Milford Lodge and there is always so much real life learning that children experience .Yesterday a group of children spent time talking to Matt, an Arborist from Parklands Maintenance . He was here to prune the beautiful tall palm trees on the front lawn.Matt patiently answered so many questions that the children had about his work. He explained the importance of his safety equipment as well as discussing the tools he would... be using including a chainsaw and pruning saw. We have a group of children who are particularly interested in power tools at the moment so this was a wonderful opportunity to discuss their favourite topic. The previous day Henry had brought in a hedge trimmer which we took to the park and Henry and his friends helped the gardener trim the hedges. We then sat in a shady spot on the lawn to watch Matt work removing all the dead and dying fronds from the palms which was fascinating for everyone .Afterwards they enjoyed collecting the seeds. They initially thought these were Macadamia nuts but Matt explained the difference and how the flying foxes enjoy eating these seeds. We also had to call out a glazier as a window in our Library room mysteriously broke on Thursday morning .When Jeremy arrived he asked ''where's the broken window?". Before I could offer to show him, the children excitedly called out ''we know! , we'll show you'' and led Jeremy to the Library.Again they had many questions which were patiently answered . Jeremy measured up the window and will return early next week to replace it.
02.01.2022 With the temporary removal of many of the wonderful experiences we hold dear, we were very excited to add some of our baking experiences for children over this past month. Other experiences back on the daily chalk board include outings to the park & forest a few times a week and pony rides on Macca. Currently I have been assisting with all baking experiences - Mondays with Ann, Tuesdays with Larisa and Thursdays with Steve. These are my favourite days, and I have been so imp...ressed with every session. Having been present for each experience, it is evident the reflection, thought and planning that goes into every baking session. It was wonderful to also have Marianne back in the dining room for baking on Wednesday this week. She and Amy, one of our wonderful School Based Trainees, said it was a fabulous bake. The new dining room, and most importantly, our custom made cooking bench (made by Justin) are amazing. Having originally planned for the bench space to be able to accommodate a maximum of a dozen bakers, it is easy to see now that we can actually host up to around 16! Honestly, I am hesitant to give these experiences back to my team as I am just having way too much fun! Looking forward to the return of more of our awesome Milford experiences in Term 3 :)
