Later on the same day, on Saturday the 14th of November, Dr Christopher Pugsley will deliver a talk from New Zealand on the subject Haig, and his Dominion Commanders, the evolution of professional Citizen Armies on the Western Front. This talk will commence at 6:00pm Australian Eastern Standard Summer Time, which is 8:00pm NZ time. This is 7:00 am in the UK. Many of us are familiar with the Battle of Fromelles. But not all of us are familiar with the extent of the authorisation for the Battle of Fromelles to proceed on 19 July, 1916. The Battle itself was scheduled to take place on 17 July, 1916, but was postponed due to rain and heavy mist. Steps were taken to advise General Haig, the Commander in Chief. General Monro, in agreeing to the postponement, had decided to cancel the whole operation. But in an urgent dispatch, he informed Haig of his decision, and asked for leave to inform General Plumer. In answer, Monro received the following reply: The Commander-in-Chief wishes the special operation mentioned ... to be carried out as soon as possible, weather permitting, provided always that General Sir Charles Monro is satisfied that the conditions are favourable, and that the resources at his disposal, including ammunition, are adequate both for the preparation and execution of the enterprise. Haig thus provided an opportunity for the battle to be deferred for appropriate conditions and resources, but it was not his final decision that the Battle of Fromelles would proceed when it did. General Monro had already given his opinion that the resources were sufficient, so the operation would inevitably proceed. You are invited to register for and attend the presentation dealing with the work of General Haig throughout the whole World War 1 period. Your participation will show support for the WFA and our shared endeavours to Remember those who served and lived through the Great War. The link below will take you to a registration portal to submit your contact details. A link to attend on the nominated date will then be forwarded to you shortly afterwards. Please retain this link for use on the day. The link to register is here. Space is limited. https://www.westernfrontassociation.com//online-haig-and-/ Best wishes for now, Geoffrey Benn, on behalf of the Fromelles Association of Australia, and on behalf of our friends at FFFAIF and WFA.

01.01.2022 In a new exhibition at the Shrine, Imagining Centaur, celebrated artist Dean Bowen created the powerful Imagining Centaur exhibition, which explores the tragic ...story of the Australian Hospital Ship Centaur. Torpedoed on 14 May 1943 off the coast of Australia, Centaur lost 268 crew and medical staff. The exhibition features a commissioned animation of Bowen’s charcoal drawings by Japanese audio-visual artist, Ayumi Sasaki. The animation is a wonderful synergy of several creative minds from two nations, once enemies now friends, bringing to life Bowen's beautiful, unsettling but ultimately hopeful vision.
