18.01.2022 This painting truly represents the close bond of empathy and understanding between the Australian Light Horseman and his horse. This light horseman has been bitterly disappointed, for the mail has come and he has missed out again. This was the experience of trooper Ion Idriess for this is what he wrote in his diary in 1916... "June 21st Yesterday fifteen bags of mail (thousands of letters) came for the 5TH. And yet there was not one solitary letter, parcel, or even newspaper ...for me." September 19th Why the hell don't I get any letters or parcels? My mates are always getting them: I don't get a lousy newspaper even." Another Light Horseman, Major Harold B Suttor wrote in his diary in May 1918.. "Thurs 9. One ton of mail arrives and not one letter for me - usual luck" Feeling forlorn and forgotten this Light Horseman has ridden his mount aside from the rest of his section, and feeling rather sorry for himself has plopped down on the ground to indulge in a little wallow in self pity alone. His horse may not understand just why his rider is so unhappy at this moment, but horses are very sensitive and intelligent creatures, and he certainly can feel that his master is upset. He bends his head down over his masters shoulder, nuzzling him perhaps with a little nicker of horse sympathy, to let him know that he is by his side, feeling his sadness, and he is not alone. His Light Horseman responds by laying his head against that of his horse and giving him a hug and caress. 16.01.2022 The Malayan Emergency was declared on 18 June 1948. Australia's involvement in the Emergency began in 1950 with the arrival of RAAF aircraft and personnel in Singapore. Dakotas from 38 Squadron and six Lincoln bombers of 1 Squadron provided the backbone of air operations. In October 1955, the 2nd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (2RAR), arrived in Penang; they were replaced by 3 RAR in October 1957. 3 RAR left Malaya in October 1959 to be replaced by 1 RAR. The Malayan ...government officially declared the Emergency over on 31 July 1960 however 1 RAR remained in Malaya until October the following year, when 2 RAR returned for a second tour. In August 1962 the battalion was committed to anti-communist operations in Perlis and Kedah, completing its tour in August 1963. In addition to air and infantry forces, Australia also provided artillery and engineering support, and an airfield construction squadron built the main runway for the air force base at Butterworth. RAN ships also served in the Malayan Emergency. Lasting 13 years, the Malayan Emergency was the longest continuous military commitment in Australia's history. 01.01.2022 For many years hundreds of Motorcyclists have participated in the Ride for Justice in Sydney that raises funds to help support the Homicide Victims Support Group (HVSG) and the amazing work they do. As you would know this event is Championed by Simon Bouda, well-known Channel Nine Crime & Terror reporter. Sadly this year, owing to the COVID restrictions, the ride was unable to go ahead. As you can imagine this has put a huge dent in the fund raising activities desperately ...needed to keep this vital service going. A Patch for 2020 to acknowledge the reasons why a ride couldnt happen was floated and the Military Shop is proud to come on board to help with this cause. This means that every patch sold will have 100% of the purchase price donated to the HVSG. Whilst it may not get to the dizzy heights of fundraising that the enthusiastic riders normally bring to the event it will be better than doing nothing. After all every little bit helps.
