24.01.2022 Is there such thing as too much breastfeeding? No! Every baby is different and as their needs change, their feeding patterns can change too. Watch your baby’s hunger cues instead of worrying about how often you’re feeding or how long you’re feeding for. Early cues - Might open mouth or turn head seeking. Stirring. 23.01.2022 If someone doesn’t know how to help, breastfeeding is usually blame. Baby not sleeping? It’s because you breastfeed too much. Baby not really into solids foods? It’s because you breastfeed too much. ... Mother is really tired? It’s because you breastfeed too much. Toddler is deemed too attached to their mother? It’s because you breastfeed too much. Actually, most babies don’t sleep through the night. Babies usually take a while to get into solids. Every mother is exhausted. Toddlers are supposed to form secure attachments with their main caregiver. That’s human development. It’s normal human behaviour and breastfeeding is the answer to 99.9% of their problems. - @themilkmeg

19.01.2022 Are you worried about a low milk supply? There are two causes of low milk supply: Primary Low Supply - Caused by illness, anatomical or medical condition experienced by the mum. Eg. PCOS, IGT or hormonal imbalance. Secondary Low Supply - Caused by insufficient milk removal from the breasts. Eg. Baby isn’t draining milk properly, baby is being supplemented with bottles/formula. ... If you want to increase your milk supply, first we have to figure out which cause you are dealing with, then we can move on to solving the issue. See more

But motherhood is not simple, babies are not simple, and neither can be simplified into an easy slogan. 18.01.2022 When did you last have a break mumma? We cannot constantly give all of ourselves to others. It’s not possible to keep that up! So please make sure you are making room for your own needs too. Here are a few ideas:... - Give baby to your partner/family/friend while you have a cup of tea in a peaceful setting. - Have a nice bath with your baby (just don’t make the water too hot!). - Call a friend. - Take a nap. - Go for a walk. - Listen to your favourite music. - Read a book. - Watch a show with headphones on while your baby naps on you. - Order takeaway or ask a friend/family member to make you a meal. - Hire/ask someone else to clean your house. 16.01.2022 How long did you breastfeed for? Breastmilk is not just for newborn babies. Your milk is constantly being altered and produced to your child’s needs, with tremendous health benefits even after the first year (or two!). The longer you can breastfeed for, the better.

I would like to take this opportunity to celebrate all the beautiful Indigenous Australian families but to also raise awareness of the need to increase support for First Nations new mothers and breastfeeding. The benefits of breastfeeding for both mothers and infants are well documented with exclusive breastfeeding recommended for the first six months of an infant's life. However, only 52.5% of infants born to Aboriginal women in SWSLHD are fully bre...astfed on discharge from hospital (compared with 80% of infants in NSW). 06.01.2022 You never, EVER, need to leave your baby to cry themselves to sleep. That’s not how babies learn to sleep. That’s how they learn to give up and fall asleep from exhaustion, after experiencing an increase in the stress hormone cortisol during all the crying. I know it can be hard. Sleep is a vital human need! The breast is a great settling to sleep tool but if that is no longer working for you there are gentle ways to help you both get more rest. Image from @hannahtace

04.01.2022 Some people will tell you that sleeping with your child causes them to be ‘clingy’ or ‘too attached’. This is simply not true. Children have shared sleeping spaces with their parents for thousands of years. It is completely natural and teaches children healthy sleeping patterns, temperature and breathing regulation and reduces cortisol and stress hormone release. Follow safe cosleeping practices. 01.01.2022 According to the Australian Breastfeeding Association more than 90% of babies start out breastfeeding. However, only 39% of babies are still being exclusively breastfed until 3 months of age. Many mothers struggle to continue breastfeeding so if you are having a tough time, you are not alone.
