24.01.2022 Annabelle, my gorgeous granddaughter helping with Silkie assessments today. She loves all the animals on Mill Farm and is eager to lend a hand.

23.01.2022 Introducing GOLIATH, our almost 11 month old buff cockerel. This big boy has the goods! Size, weight, width in chest and rear, type and beautiful silk. He has some lovely ladies to accompany him this season and he will be our #1 man. Photos courtesy of #1 chookie photographer Dianne Theuns.

23.01.2022 We have now put together 2 breeding groups of bearded whites. Fingers crossed! My new obsession.

22.01.2022 Our #1 buff breeding group out free ranging today. Goliath and the girls. Beautiful photos by Dianne Theuns.

21.01.2022 Jen and the girls have been keen for chickens for some time. The other night she finally just decided to order a chicken coop online. It was delivered yesterday... and my weekend task today was decided. Next step is to get some chickens. They’re going to call it Lodge Ladies and name some of their chicks after former PM’s wives who lived at The Lodge. See more

21.01.2022 Non bearded white breeding group out for a scratch by the dam today. Best whites we have ever had. Fingers crossed. Pics by Dianne Theuns.

20.01.2022 Our pullets are now featured as the cover pic for Silkies Australia - Discussion Group. Must admit they do look great together.

20.01.2022 Wing tag # green 206 Blue roo

20.01.2022 The miracle hatch! These guys went through so much. Repeated overheating at 39C+, incubator motor fail and repeated times turning off and throwing doors open on the incubator. I probably won’t be keeping many of this batch although they are perfectly healthy. It was another test batch.

18.01.2022 We vaccinate for Mareks disease at Mill Farm Silkies. Chicks are hatched in our incubators and kept under quarantine conditions until the vaccine has taken. They then move to our grower sheds.

18.01.2022 We haven’t bred many silkies this year to date as we were downsizing. HOWEVER! The incubators are now full! We should have some to share in the new year.

15.01.2022 Those days were very interesting. We used to breed a lot and had many colours.

14.01.2022 Brooder care of chicks. For those who want to hatch chicks, temperature in the first week of life is very important. 35C is ideal initially reducing by 5 degrees each week. Chicks will let you know if they are too cold or too hot by their placement in the brooder. If they are clustered in the centre under the heat source then they are cold and if they are at the far end of the brooder then they are too hot. They are comfy if they are forming a ring around the hottest point in the brooder like in the second pic. They will be quite active too when comfortable but expect them to rest occasionally. Most losses of chicks occur in the first week and it is usually due to insufficient heat. We just need to be observant.

13.01.2022 I wish we had hatches like that this year. We decided to downsize and are only hatching small numbers. Like other breeders we have been inundated with requests for silkies.

13.01.2022 Our 2020 numbered wing tags have arrived from The States. All our birds get identified with these. New colour each year and this year we are pink! We find tagging essential to keep track of our breeding.

13.01.2022 Overflowing! What’s coming up over the next months. There should be some keepers amongst those!

12.01.2022 In the grower pens this afternoon. Whites from a new line, light blues and splash plus a couple of buff. These are some of the older growers for this season. We will start assessing them early in the new year. An early look indicates a majority of breeding quality. We culled bad feet early but have to wait to assess type and wing structure. Silk is coming up to expectations so far and combs are looking good. We have hatched large numbers in recent weeks and are expecting many of those to be of pet quality. Once again those would be assessed in the new year. We are getting close to the end of our breeding season. Stay tuned for what comes next.

11.01.2022 Fresh from the Hatcher. AI whites, blues and splash and a few langshans. The ones we couldn’t get out early enough last season. 2020 sure is different!

11.01.2022 Still my faves! I should have kept a bearded buff but I didn’t. Does anyone out there have quality bearded buffs?

10.01.2022 Can’t believe we used to hatch that many chicks 6 years ago.

10.01.2022 Spring at Mill Farm. A great time of year!

08.01.2022 In coming weeks we will have limited numbers of pet quality Silkie chicks about 2 to 5 weeks old. Still need heat. White, blue or buff/partridge mainly. Pick up only. Unsexed, vaccinated. Not for transport. PM if interestedIn coming weeks we will have limited numbers of pet quality Silkie chicks about 2 to 5 weeks old. Still need heat. White, blue or buff/partridge mainly. 08.01.2022 Lost to a hawk a few years ago but still loved. A very beautiful girl in nature too.

07.01.2022 Brooder room is choccas! As I write the last batch of silkies for this season is just hatching in the incubators. I can just hear the early chirping. Music to any animal lover’s ears. Probably just in time as we are in for very hot weather next week. This last batch will leave no more room in the grower sheds. Full house!

06.01.2022 Nice little batch of AI whites, plus a couple of blues and splash. NFS. White chicks come in all sorts of down colours. These are very dark.

06.01.2022 Definitely not silkies but very cute none the less. Ancona ducklings are quite rare here.

05.01.2022 Not baaaaaaad!!!!!!!!! New FLUFFY PETS range for 2021 from Mill Farm.

05.01.2022 20 years old now but one of the best investments I have made. When you breed chickens a generator is essential. We had a blackout last night as a result of these wild winds. Always in August when you are hatching and have chicks in brooders. All well thanks to trusty Genny.

05.01.2022 Good morning from Mill Farm.

04.01.2022 I love watching freshly hatched Silkie chicks. This was one of our last hatches for 2020. They are nearly ready now for their first assessment. Looking good!

03.01.2022 Three quarters of the latest hatch at Mill Farm. Biggest hatch yet this season with over 50 chicks. Mainly whites, blues and partridge (no greys LOL). A couple of buff and black. A couple of bearded whites by the looks of them. Probably only 2 more big hatches then only a few specials to hatch for this season.

03.01.2022 Last hatch for the year 2020. Two brooders full with 70 or so chicks. White in bearded and non bearded, buff, black, blue and partridge plus a ring in (blue langshan). The incubators are now officially off.
