This event is a fundraiser for the 100 Girls Project, a project to provide Tertiary Education to Orphaned & Disadvantaged girls in India, as a path out of poverty. In December 2014, my wife Karen & I traveled to Kasam in India to volunteer in an Orphanage. We were both incredibly impacted by what we experienced. To create a context, one of my favorite quotes is ... You never really understand a person until you consider things from their point of view... Until you climb inside of their skin and walk around in it. Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird That is exactly what we got to do. We spent 9 days fully immersed in the life of the Orphanage. We got to see the lives of Women & Girls; we got to see the limitations placed upon them by their education, by their background and their society. For Girls in India, a life where they get to fully express who they are for the world is not the norm. Their life's journey is highly defined by the success of their marriage. Should their husbands die or they get divorced, life can get really ugly. Education is the most powerful way to provide Girls with the means to become self reliant and resilient. The confidence and skills they gain will allow them during their entire lifetime to meet head on all life presents. They will gain skills to control their own destiny. In so doing they enlarge their role in society, which is important to India, especially as role models for future generations of both girls and boys. When you look at this project I know it is easy to say that this is too big a challenge or too hard to do, and so it is easy to take no action. I ask you to look into their eyes and then deny them a fulfilled life of joy, love and happiness. For us we are left with no other choice but to Act. Will you join with us? I acknowledge that as an Individual there are limits to what we can achieve; it is when we act as a community that anything is possible, so I invite you to join us and others to see what unexpectedly amazing things we can achieve together.
