25.01.2022 Practice the pause "Pause before judging. Pause before assuming. Pause before accusing. Pause whenever you're about to act harshly, and you'll avoid doing and saying things you'll later regret." Lori Deschene. .... When training a young horse, we do a LOT of transitions. Any change to direction, speed or gait, qualifies. When we ask a horse to transition, we first ask them to pause..... in English riding this is called a half halt, some coaches will direct you to 'check' your horse, others may say to 'take hold'. We physically apply pressure to the horses mouth via the reins, and pressure to the horses rib cage and belly with our legs. We are asking for our horse to mentally group for what is coming, to poise their body for a response to our next instruction, to momentarily slow down, balance and be prepared, to think before they respond. They learn to wait for direction from their rider before proceeding. The more a young horse practices this, the less likely they are to react or over react, and the more trustworthy they become. Once out on a trail this is a valuable tool! If something unexpected occurs and your horse goes to spook/bolt/buck, you have programmed into them a 'wait, come under me and think' cue. . In life and horsing, practice the pause. JT 2020 #inlifeandhorsing #lifelessonsfromthehorseyards

25.01.2022 Learning how to learn.... Do you teach your children or your horses how to learn? Do you hold your pressure until they start to look for the right answer or do you just sort it out for them and not hold them to a higher standard? Do you correct or fix their mistakes yourself, or allow learning through natural consequences? Do you reward when they are seeking truth? Do you encourage when they make mistakes but remain firm until they self correct? Do you make the right thing easy? Do you make them feel comfortable and confident when they offer interest, and draw them into a place of learning? Do you model learning, introspection and self correction?? This is Quinn on her second ride #inlifeandhorsing #lifelessonsfromthehorseyards #lifeisforlearning #trainingyounghorses
