03.01.2022 There are two global issues that flood the media about our environment. First is water, and the lack of usable water, and the second is about how chemicals are damaging to our environment (eg plastics polluting our waterways, leeching chemicals into the soil and water and non-biodegradable). But ‘Fast Fashion’ is causing an environmental catastrophe. We’ve seen documentaries about sweat shops (Re 2013 Collapse of Rana Plaza - 1,132 workers killed & thousands injured) but what... about the actual production of materials. Watch Fashion’s Dirty Secrets by Stacey Dooley. Cotton is often advertised as natural, sustainable and environmentally friendly. But the production uses more water than any other fiber and uses pesticides/chemicals that damage land/soil and the environment where it is grown. The disappearing Aral Sea clearly shows the impact on the environment (see photo). Once it was a thriving sea with fishing industries; now it’s a desert with chemical sandstorms that can be seen on satellite images. Factories that process fabrics are blatantly polluting waterways. The enormity of the problem is insane. The Citarum River in Indonesia is the most polluted river in the world. +50 factories pump waste directly into the river. Millions of people in communities along the Citarum are directly affected using untreated water for bathing, laundry, food preparation and also for irrigation of fields. The water is contaminated with lead, mercury, arsenic, amongst other chemicals. It’s not just the production of new fibers that is problematic. Clothing dumped in landfill is a huge problem with microfibers washed out of synthetic clothing polluting the soil, rivers and oceans. And the volume of waste is increasing as clothes are disposable; cheap, not made to last and fad fashions. What can you do? When able reuse, recycle, repurpose, and pass on to friends/family/charity. If a purchase from new fibers is necessary, (clothes, electronics, books, etc.) you should purchase items that will last through seasons and years. 03.01.2022 Very unhappy with judging @sydneyroyal_eastershow . Craft Class 67 was not awarded any places, only 1x HC. I questioned the result and was told it was their discretion not to award any places. And an appeal (which cost $100) would have very minimal chance of success. CLASS 67 - Garment of Original Design featuring textile manipulation. One article of clothing for either male or female. Attention should be paid to the quality of workmanship as well as the original design. (No...te: ‘textile manipulation’ refers to adding of interest/embellishment/texture/colour to the original fabric). The dress I submitted had ‘Chinese lantern’ style detachable sleeves which I designed, had pleats, gathers, rouching, lace, buttons, beading, sequins, used a mix of fabrics including velvets, tulles, has hand seen features, had two layers of lining, and is very original and unique. It has quality of workmanship, original design, added interest, embellishments, texture, and colour. The article that was awarded the HC had only two box pleats at the bust and some beading.
