25.01.2022 I am loving.....the newly reformulated Mediherb Cranberry Complex for Cystitis. This formula contains herbs that are antimicrobial & antiseptic to the urinary system. One of these is Buchu (Agathosma betulina). The essential oil used in this formula has a striking fragrance that you can instantly smell apon opening the bottle. You can actually smell it in the urine 2-3 days after onset of taking the herb, which indicates it is exerting it’s antimicrobial action apon the mucou...s membranes of the urinary tract quite quickly. I have used this formula to resolve many UTI’s naturally in both adults & children (my youngest daughter is prone to UTI’s)thus preventing recurrent antibiotic use (or any antibiotic use for that matter) for cystitis. It also contains Bearberry (arctostaphylos uva-ursi), which is our best herbal antiseptic herb for UTI’s- very effective! A liquid formulation can also be made for children who can’t take tablets. 21.01.2022 Keep Moving- Your life depends on it. We have incredible bodies that are perfectly designed to support us, but modern lifestyles have greatly reduced our daily physical activity. Exercise is so fabulous & here’s why: Exercise improves the efficiency of our heart muscle, so it uses less oxygen, and reduces blood pressure.... Prevents insulin resistance Increases levels of brain chemicals such as GABA, serotonin, and dopamine which help us feel happier, calmer & more motivated. Balances nervous energy in times of stress Assists fat loss & lean muscle growth which is needed to support bones & joints. See more

21.01.2022 Testing my red blood cell Omega-3’s Just getting around to trialing this simple blood test which will assess my levels of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA & DHA) in my red blood cells. An omega-3 index in the desirable range of 8%-12% is an indicator of better overall health, and can help to improve heart, brain, eye, and joint health. Western populations are typically around 3-4%. Recent research has even found that a low omega-3 index can increase risk of death from coronary events by 35%, so may be a better indicator for risk of CVD and overall mortality than cholesterol. These tests kits will be available through me as part of nutritional testing for patients when indicated.

20.01.2022 Medicinal herbs are a truly fascinating part of creation! Although famous for its immune enhancing actions, Echinacea has recently been shown to belong to the adaptogenic class of herbs, much like the Ginsengs. This is because of its natural ability to increase & optimise our body’s resistance to stress. And here’s how. Fairly recent research has discovered that Echinacea alkylamides, the active constituents of the root, help to reduce the effects of excess cortisol via ac...tion on our endocannabinoid system (ECS). This system in our bodies is composed of neurotransmitters called endocannabinoids and receptors, most notably CB1 & CB2. The system is designed to help us to maintain balance in our bodies during times of stress. Echinacea alkylamides mimic endocannabinoids and bind to CB1 & CB2 receptors in our brains and immune system, helping the body to counteract the negative effects of cortisol seen in times of stress. Quite sciency & technical, but equally fascinating. See more

18.01.2022 Iodine deficiency is much more common in Australia than you think, and even with the healthiest of diets you still may be at risk. Because iodine is essential to thyroid function, ovulation, & healthy progesterone production, symptoms of iodine deficiency may include: Sore, tender breasts Heavy menstrual bleeding Low thyroid function symptoms such as:... Unexplained weight gain Cold intolerance Hair loss Swelling or enlargement of the thyroid gland at the base of your neck. The most reliable and accurate measurement of your iodine nutritional status is a 24-hour urinary iodine excretion, where urine is collected over a 24 hour period so as to overcome the problem of diurnal and day-to-day variations in iodide excretions.

01.01.2022 I’ve had a recent run of success in treating warts, plantar warts, & mucous cysts (mucocele) using a neat topical application of an alcoholic extract of Thuja (thuja occidentalis). Patient one: Presented with 3 large plantar warts on the soles of both feet- 2 on the left & 1 on the right. After 2 months of neat application of Thuja to each wart + covering with an occlusive dressing, all 3 plantar warts disappeared. The interesting thing with this case is that she only applie...d it to the warts on the left foot, suggesting that the Thuja exerted systemic anti viral effects by applying it topically. Patient two: My son had been noticing an increase in size of a wart above his L elbow (as shown). Once again, after 2 months of topical thuja application the wart dramatically reduced to being hardly visible. Patient three: The final patient was my 7 year old daughter who presented with a mucous cyst on the inside of her lip as shown below. It had been growing rapidly in size over the course of a month or so. After 3 weeks of topical thuja application, the lesion completely resolved. Both warts and plantar warts are caused by various strains of the human papilloma viruses (HPV), and can spread via skin-to-skin contact or touching contaminated surfaces. Thuja occidentalis is antiviral for non-enveloped viruses like HPV, and enveloped viruses like Epstein Barr Virus (EBV). It also has a traditional use for cysts. I have also used thuja effectively as part of a herbal cream for healing & soothing Molluscum Contagiosum infection in children & recurrent cold sore’s (Herpes simplex virus).
