Our school readiness program has been developed by our passionate Speech and Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists and Early Childhood Teachers to support children in their transition to 'Big School' within a small group setting. This 2 Day program costs $290 per person and will run on the 19-20 of January 2021 from 9am to 12pm at our Milton office. Given the recent onset of droughts, bushfires, and the global pandemic, in 2020 the OT Week theme is: Resilience: Supporting our communities to rebuild, recover, and reengage. This year the event not only shines a spotlight on the value of occupational therapy in our communities, but also serves as a call to arms to support those hardest hit. In supporting people to participate in activities they find meaningful, occupational thera...pists are vital in helping our communities through disaster recovery. As disaster survivors reengage in disrupted occupations (such as daily routines, activities and employment), they can better cope with stress and be supported through their recovery. Please consider buying a DIY Gingerbread House Kit to raise funds to assist local super star Holly Burns, raise awareness for her condition and funds towards research into finding a cure for Vanishing White Matter (VWM) Leukodystrophy Disease. It is such a rare condition that there is currently no funding provided to help find a cure. 20.01.2022 Last chance to register for our Stormbirds program! Stormbirds is a small group program that is based on the belief that change, loss and grief are a normal and natural part of life. It provides children and young people who have lived through a natural disaster the opportunity to examine the impact of this experience on their lives. TLC are running this program in Weeks 4-7 of Term 4 for primary school aged children who experienced the trauma of last summer's bushfires. The program is free of charge and will be facilitated by our experienced specialist educator Simon. We will be running a series of one and two day bootcamps based on the fabulous programs from PEERS. These are the very same evidence based programs that feature in 'Love on the Spectrum' which has just hit Netflix. The bootcamps are for adolescents and young adults and will include: Bully-Proofing, Friendship Bootcamp and our first ever Dating Bootcamp. To sponsor Team TLC please visit https://greatillawarrawalk.com//1458ab1e3fa40d92c55bd04d0/ The organisers of the walk have made the decision, in conjunction with Chloe Saxby’s family..., to support research into Vanishing White Matter (VWM) Disease at the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute (IHMRI) at the University of Wollongong (UOW) for the third year in a row. Chloe sadly lost her battle with VWM late last year at the tender age of 12. For those who don’t know the background to this great event, local girls Chloe Saxby and Holly Burns were diagnosed with an extremely rare and degenerative brain disease almost ten years ago. Vanishing White Matter Disease, for which there is no cure or treatment available, is a progressive disorder that mainly affects the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system). In 2018 it was announced that thanks to local charities Saving Chloe Saxby and the Great Illawarra Walk - Australia’s first research into Vanishing White Matter Disease would take place in Wollongong. 17.01.2022 Welcome back!! It's hard to believe that we have already been back for two weeks. We hit the ground running with an incredible planning day with all of our wonderful staff from both the Milton and Bay and Basin centres. In amongst catching up and planning for 2021 we also took the opportunity to connect with the land on which we are so fortunate to live with a walk on the Ulladulla One Track For All. We have been delighted to run a range a range of group programs including f...riendship and anti-bullying bootcamps from PEERS as well as school readiness and handwriting programs. The new build at Church Street in Milton is coming along beautifully and we are approaching lock up. What a start to the new year! 14.01.2022 Celebration. An exciting new piece of technology has arrived at Milton TLC. The Accent 800 from @liberatorltd. The Accent 800 is an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) device. You may have seen someone write in a notebook to answer a question. Maybe you have seen people using gestures to communicate. You may have seen someone point to pictures or push buttons on a computer that speaks for them. These are all forms of augmentative and alternative communication, o...r AAC. People with significant speech or language difficulties may need AAC to help them communicate. Some may use it all of the time. Others may say some words but use AAC for longer sentences or with people they don’t know well. AAC can help in school, at work, and when talking with friends and family. This incredible AAC device is on loan from @liberatorltd for trial by one of our local families.
