25.01.2022 DALABON is one of several Indigenous languages on the verge of extinction in Australia. Spoken fluently by ten to 15 people in southern Arnhem Land, it is bei...ng overwhelmed by Bininj Kunwok (spoken to the north in western Arnhem Land) and English and Creole towards Katherine and to the south. Nick Evens, professor of linguistics at ANU, is working with Manuel Pamkal, a Dalabon language expert, and traditional owners in the Bulman area. The project is facilitated by the Mimal Rangers. I photographed Dudley, Elizabeth and Vivien Lawrence going over some Dalbon stories at Kobbulyu talking about yams, red apple, bush peanuts and the region’s rich history of Mimi spirits. Thanks to Mimal rangers Tanya, Lydia and Terry. See more

03.01.2022 Today we went to Weemol spring to spray weeds as part of our rehabilitation project. The area used to be a forest of gmelina and hyptis but now we only have to patch up each season. #weeds #rangers
