21.01.2022 Teaching children correct anatomical terms can educate, equip and empower them, and provide a protective factor. If we give the private parts of the body pet ...names or say they are rude parts this can increase the chance of a disclosure being missed and also contribute to the confusion, shame, guilt and self blame many victims of child sexual abuse experience. Teach children the correct terms for the private parts of their body in the same way you would teach them head, shoulders, knees, toes, elbow, hand, eye, ear, nose etc. Private parts of the body include: penis, testicles, scrotum, bottom, anus, breasts, nipples, vagina and vulva. We also include the mouth as a private part of the body because of the prevalence of oral sex. No one should see, touch or take a photo/video of the private parts of the body without a good reason (e.g. going to the doctor, dentist, giving medicine, brushing teeth, changing nappy, feeding a younger child). Ongoing, age and developmentally appropriate conversation and education about protective behaviours (body safety) and comprehensive relationship and sexuality education is essential, especially with so many children seeing, being sent and shown pornography in primary school and the rise of child-on-child sexual abuse and children/young people displaying harmful sexual behaviours. Thanks Sex Positive Families for the reminder body parts are body parts.

19.01.2022 February as a month is particularly hard for me, even more so the 22nd. This is the day that I lost our child at 20 weeks, I was in another country away from family and friends, with limited information, limited choice, even less knowledge on my situation. I had birthed twice prior to this pregnancy, I knew something was not quite right, I kept saying as long as there is a heartbeat all is fine and there was.... every time we had a scan. Something was still not right, mums kn...ow, I just couldnt put my finger on it. I was on bed rest for a month, we did not have a Tv, I learnt my camera so well it was second nature, I read every book we had, I listened to the radio and I journaled. I had many many many conversations, in my head, out loud and in my journal with the little human growing inside me about how they were so wanted, so loved and how I was going to protect them to no end. As our room was upstairs, I was only permitted to go down once I day. This generally coincided with having a shower and dinner. It was a long month, a month I was prepared to endure for the safety of our baby. Sometime during the month, my symptoms changed, I didnt feel pregnant, the "signs" were just not there, but I hoped and prayed that everything was fine. So after the month, we went for a check-up, different doctor, a good reputation among ex-pats. He looked at me, asked why I was there and when I said 20 weeks check up ..... he said...Your not 20 weeks, youre not big enough!! The rest is a blur, I went for an ultrasound, confirmation of a missed miscarriage followed by emergency surgery. Over the years there have been so many what ifs, I have decided that I did what I could at the time and place in my life and even with the knowledge and understanding I have now, I do not think things would or could have been much different, I do believe this baby was a girl and her passing paved the way for our Rainbow baby, who is not so much a baby now. Thank you Turtle, you are always in my heart, you are missed so very much R.I.P xxx

18.01.2022 #Repost @fourelementphotography (@get_repost) What is dilation? Dilation is a term that describes the widening of the cervical opening. Measurements start at 1cm and range up to 10cm. 10cm is considered fully dilated. You are deemed in active labour around 4cm with consistent contractions. However dilation is not a sole indicator of labour progression and you can be dilated and not be in active labour. If you are being induced with pitocin, the general rule of thumb is 1c...m per hour. What is effacement? Cervical effacement is the thinning of the cervix. This occurs when babys head is pushing on the cervix. During pregnancy the cervix is meant to be a minimum of 3cm in length to be deemed safe. Effacement and dilation is what helps release the mucous plug. What is station? Station is the position of babys head in the birth canal. O station means baby is fully engaged. The pressure of babys head against the cervix at ) or positive stations assists in the dilation and effacement. #station #effacement #dilation #birth #terminology #3goldenquestions #babytime #birthtalk #knowledgeispower #beinformed #understandbirth

06.01.2022 The amount of coverage on the news of Meaghans loss anyone would think she is the only women ever to miscarriage I am so torn as to what to think. Firstly I'm saddened at her loss, I am also frustrated that it takes a Celebrity to miscarry for it to be "talked about'. Women have been talking about their losses for years, decades! ... It should be spoken about, women shouldn't feel that they have to keep it a secret. Now that it's out lets keep talking about the losses, our babies that are no longer with us.
06.01.2022 PASSIVE PUMPING - what is it? Passive pumping refers to catching the leaking milk from the opposite breast that your baby is nursing on. This milk would otherwi...se be wasted! Passive pumping is great for mums with a strong let down, oversupply of milk and those that want to slowly build a supply of expressed milk for their baby. In the early days I managed to capture over 3 litres of milk using a silicone pump. I ended up donating my breast milk to a lovely mumma who was exclusively pumping and was struggling to meet the demands of her baby. That 3 litres of milk would have been wasted! Instead I was able to capture it and help nourish a baby in need. Silicone pumps are also great for portability. No need for a power supply! And no irritating machine noises! PRO TIP! The lanyard on the Milk Mate pump makes for a great distraction for a baby (or toddler) that like to help you express milk and yes I speak from experience....
