25.01.2022 Very true! All sorts of routines and habits (even the bad ones) are easier to do if you practice them! With physical activities it's called muscle memory! They say you never forget how to ride bike because it's a gross motor activity. That's why teachers sometimes get children to trace letters in the air with their whole arm, as it activates the 'big muscles' and imprints on the brain more easily! (Or so i have been told! LOL!) :)

25.01.2022 FRACTIONS are a tricky concept for many kids to learn! 23.01.2022 What a fabulous idea for a sunny day!! :) I've seen a similar idea before, where you line up several toy animals on a window sill and let your child draw around their shadows on the floor!

22.01.2022 Dice Games are an EXCELLENT way to build your child's "number sense". :) "Number Sense" is the ability to understand numbers and the value of the 'numerals' we use to record number values. It's the ability have a 'good intuition' about numbers and their relationships to each other. It's being able to count and to estimate and to "see" that a group of objects has four in it, no matter what way they are placed on a table (i.e. in a straight line, or in a square like a dice pattern or randomly on the table....you still have "four").

14.01.2022 VERY TRUE!! Something to keep in mind next time your child 'acts out'. Yes, they may just be defiant, but there might be something else triggering their big emotional outbursts. Kids don't have the vocabulary, nor the maturity to describe their feelings and seek a solution.

14.01.2022 I think it's important for kids to be taught at an early stage, that some "sounds" have several alternative spellings! In my tutoring work, I use the 'Reading Simplified' program that teaches several alternative spellings via a short sentence. Young kids are able to learn these alternatives and don't need to be 'spoon fed' the various spellings one by one. I like these worksheets as they'll remind kids there is more than one way to spell the long "A" sound. :)

13.01.2022 Is your kid disorganised and forgetful? I'm NOT saying 'A forgetful person has dyslexia'!!!! .......BUT it's quite common for people with dyslexia to have 'organisational' issues and be forgetful!!! It doesn't JUST affect their ability to process words and symbols! Dyslexia affects much more than reading and writing. It also causes difficulty with organisation, memory and math

11.01.2022 The teaching of reading is a highly controversial area! BUT there are SO many research studies done on the "Science of Reading" (SoR) and the actual 'science of reading' is so widely accepted, that, "in the scientific world, if you write another paper about these fundamental facts and submit it to a journal, THEY WON'T ACCEPT IT because it's considered 'settled science'."* BUT many people don't want to know about it! THANKFULLY, there are many people who ARE using the "SoR" and helping more kids than ever before! :) That's why I LOVE the READING SIMPLIFIED program as it uses all the latest research in a unique way that cuts out a lot of the wasted time and gets right down to the core skills that are needed to learn to read! :) *Quote by Dr Louisa Moats in "Hard Words"

09.01.2022 For those following the progress of my 'garage reno' into my "Tutoring Room"....I didn't want to bore you with 'blow by blow' details but it's time for an update!! :) *A New cement slab is in, plus a nice path for the kiddos (and their parents) to use, to eliminate the tripping hazards under our carport! *Framing up started and I spent a LOT of time working out where my desk, filing cabinet and other fixtures would (or would not!!) fit! :) Note the masking tape & drawers on the floor so I could visualise it all! *Two days of electrical work for all the power points etc *AND Today the walls got a lovely pink blanket to keep them warm!!!! :) And by lunch time I had half a ceiling!! :)
