25.01.2022 Dr David Unwin is a pioneer of the use of a low carbohydrate diet for management of Type 2 Diabetes. He has developed these terrific graphics which show just how much sugar is delivered into the blood stream from everyday foods which are considered healthy. Some of them are eye opening!
24.01.2022 So great to see this approach getting more attention! Type 2 diabetes can be beaten!
21.01.2022 Lots of nice simple tips here to enhance mood. Whether instead of medication or as an adjunct, the right nutrition, exercise, relaxation methods and time outdoors in nature can greatly improve mental health. No side effects, what have you got to lose!?
18.01.2022 Too good not to share! I mixed it up a bit by adding hemp seeds. Both flax and hemp seeds are great sources of Omega 3 fatty acids, which we need to reduce inflammation in our bodies. Highly recommend this toasted with butter and Vegemite
16.01.2022 What a stunning day! Get out into the sunshine and move around - it's great for mood and energy levels and promotes healthy sleep. Notice what's around you, and see the beauty in it - this morning as I got a coffee on my way to work, there were families out enjoying the sun, spring flowers to enjoy, a chat with the lovely lady who made my coffee... Smile! And have a great day
16.01.2022 "A person following the Australian dietary guidelines may consume at least 250g of carbohydrate each day the metabolic equivalent of 60 teaspoons of sugar. This is more than three glucose tolerance tests daily" I saw this quote in an article I was reading this morning in Australian Doctor. Let that sink in for a moment. ... If you have been trying to follow those dietary guidelines in the hope of improving your health and it hasn't been working... can you see why now? It's NOT you. You don't have to "try harder". You are not failing, these guidelines are failing you! And if you are pairing that with the recommended 30 minutes of exercise a day, you will be falling well short of the amount needed to burn that load, especially if you are insulin resistant. The guidelines are failing you, not the other way around. It's time for a change.
14.01.2022 Sunlight sparkling on my coffee. Warmth inside and out. A moments peace and quiet in a busy world. We're often so focused on Doing Things we forget to rest and recover. We sprint through the day - school, work, sports, meals, housework! Think, plan, move! Hardly a moment to relax. If you're always on the go, it can be hard to even notice the moments when we could possibly relax. Try these: 5 minutes just after getting up; in the sun if you can. 5 minutes before turning in at ...night. 5 minutes during a meal break in your work day - again, get out in the sun if possible. Any time you are waiting - waiting in line at a shop, waiting for your kids at pick up time, waiting in a waiting room... Take a few slow deep breaths. Look around you and notice your surroundings. Take note of something beautiful. And just be. Be still. Let your mind and body rest. Your nervous system will thank you. See more
12.01.2022 It's been a tough few months. Everyone's been doing the best they can under the circumstances. Staying healthy has never been more important. But it can be tricky to keep motivation going through difficult times, and we often have to adjust our plans and expectations. Whatever your situation, be kind to yourself. http://www.mindbodyhealthlovelife.com/blog/starting-over
11.01.2022 Things are not normal right now, and it can be easy to focus on what's negative - the things we normally do but can't, the cancelled event, the new demands and changed routines. Today I took a walk at lunch time and enjoyed the sunshine. I would normally take a break by eating lunch in a cafe and probably reading a book. But of course all the cafes are closed, so I had to find a new way to get away from my desk. It was certainly different - pathways that normally buzz with a...ctivity and chatter were strangely quiet with everyone walking alone. It was unexpectedly very peaceful. I tried to take a photo of the lovely view, but when I went to upload discovered that I had somehow taken a photo of my feet. Oh well. We are all just getting used to this new way of life, and it's OK to make mistakes while you're learning! Find something to enjoy in your new normal. See more
10.01.2022 It's OK to not be OK in these circumstances. Where do you see yourself in this chart? Sometimes your going to be in the fear zone. That's OK. Just don't set up camp there. See what you can do today to move to another zone.
05.01.2022 Can't believe it's been a whole year! Thanks to everyone who has joined me on this journey! You all inspire me, every day.
02.01.2022 5 times the sugar content allowed to be considered bread... So, it's basically cake. It's cake with a few bits of lettuce (optional) being marketed as a healthy option. Again and again I see people who swear that they are only eating the healthiest options "I don't eat any junk". We need to call this out much more. ... You are not failing. The information you have been given has failed you. See more
01.01.2022 NEVER GO ON A DIET! Numerous studies have shown that "dieting" is linked with overall long-term weight gain. The typical pattern is that people follow an extremely restrictive eating pattern for a short period of time - often involving replacing whole meals with shakes, bars or other food substitutes - lose the weight they intended to lose, then return to their previous "normal" eating pattern, regaining all the weight they lost and more. Sound familiar? There is another way...! Never drink another diet shake or eat another tiny, unsatisfying meal.
