14.01.2022 What a few weeks it has been! The outbreak of coronavirus has been felt by people far and wide, with adults & children experiencing some fear and anxiety. How you experience stressful situations can be impacted by your life experiences, your coping strategies, the individual characteristics that make you ‘you’, and the community you live in. You may notice:-... - Worries about your own health or that of your loved ones - Difficulty relaxing or ‘winding down’ - Increase/decrease in sleep - Increase/decrease in appetite & food intake - Low or fluctuating mood - Irritability or being more inclined to anger quickly - Difficulty concentrating - Increased use of alcohol, tobacco or other dugs. Coping with stress can help you & your loved ones feel stronger. Sometimes we are exposed to situations we can’t control, but it can be helpful to focus on the things we can control. The things we CAN control include:- - taking care of yourself & loved ones - looking after your physical health, e.g. walks, exercise, healthy eating, reduce alcohol & smoking. - engaging in pleasurable activities. - And if you are in self-isolation, this could mean taking a long, warm shower; breathing deep breaths in your bedroom; noticing the things in your environment that you are grateful for; thinking about the people in your life you are grateful for; contacting friends & loved ones on phone or internet to remain connected; time in your back yard; watching TV or reading, etc. If we can be of any assistance, please discuss with our reception & if you cannot attend the practice due to self-isolation, phone or video sessions may be available to you. At Mind on Health, we see a large number of clients presenting with developmental trauma (such as abuse or neglect in childhood) &/or trauma that results from discrete traumatic experiences (such as an accident or assault). Trauma therapy can help you to recover from the physical, emotional, cognitive (thinking), and behavioural (what you do) symptoms of trauma.

R U OK day is such an important initiative to raise awareness. It has highlighted how important it is to connect to the people in our lives & ask them how they are doing; to listen without judgement or criticism; to encourage them to use their coping strategies that have worked in the past; to help them get help from mental health professionals; and to remember to check in on them later & show them you care.
