25.01.2022 As a clinician it's easy to assume that your patient wants symptomatic relief but this is not always the case. It is worthwhile getting a clear idea about your patients' agenda early on in the session. It can prevent dissatisfaction or having them tell you at the end of the session when you don't have time to address their primary concern. To learn more about communication tools to improve patient satisfaction, consider our 4 week Zoom course "Building Exceptional Communicati...on Skills" For more information, message me or email me on [email protected] #physio #physiotherapy #physicaltherapist #osteopath #thinkingphysio #annettetonkin

22.01.2022 We create the outcome we think about most. One way to change your thoughts is to change your breathing. The next step is to change your thinking... Both of these steps will impact on your physiology and the actions you take. If you look for negativity you will find it. If you look for something helpful you will find that too. Improving your ability to control your thinking is covered in our Zoom course "Building Skills and Resilience to Handle Difficult Conversations." Message us to get more information on this very popular course. #physio #physicaltherapist #physiotherapy #osteopath #thinkingphysio #annettetonkin

12.01.2022 Clients often come out with comments that indicate a belief that is unhelpful. The clinician may reply with comments like: "Yes you can." "Why can't you?"... "It's not that hard." "I'll help you" None of these responses help shift the thinking of the client. In fact they will come back with all the reasons why they can't to justify their original comment. To help someone shift their thinking and elicit possibility it is important to firstly recognise the belief and then respond with a question or statement that helps them consider options. Responses like: "I hear that you can't do.... but what part of ... do you think you could do?" Breaks the activity down into doable chunks. Once you get "I can do that", you have a starting point. "If you could what would you do?" Elicits possibility. "What do you need help with so that you could do...?" Aims to find out what the concern is. "If you could, how might you go about....?" Has the mind thinking of possible actions. "Why might you want to...?" Has the person thinking of future benefits rather than resistance #communicationforphysios #managingnegativetalk #improvingadherence #physio #physiotherapist #physicaltherapist #thinkingphysio #annettetonkin

12.01.2022 Here are 10 helpful tips to improve rapport and understanding with your patients. Non-verbal communication will always over-ride the words that you use in the mind of the listener. How you make your patient feel will be remembered far longer than the words you say.... "Building Exceptional Communication Skills" is my next course beginning Feb 18th. If you would like to know more about it, direct message me. #physio #physiotherapy #physicaltherapist #osteopath #thinkingphysio #annettetonkin

07.01.2022 Here is an interesting article on "Tactical Empathy". It is written in the context of sales and negotiation but there are some very relevant concepts for health clinicians. Especially those working with clients who struggle with treatment adherence. As health professionals we are sometimes very focused on providing the solution to presenting problem that we forget to delve into what's causing the resistance. Anyway, I thought the article was worth sharing and thinking about... https://blog.blackswanltd.com//the-most-underutilized-nego
