13.01.2022 On Tuesday this week, the College held a traditional Maori Hangi. Mr Joseph Te Maihengia White and other MSC staff prepared, cooked and served a traditional meal to the students and staff. The Hangi was to take place earlier in the year but due to Covid-19 had to be cancelled. Hangi is a great way to show the Maori culture but also shows how a great meal can bring people together. All staff and students who were able to attend the Hangi were able to connect over this tradit...ional meal. Would you like to know the process of organising a Hangi? Mr White had to wake at 4:00am to load his vehicle with the burners, metal baskets, irons and gas. Custom-made burners, superheat irons and volcanic rock are used to heat the ground. Once the heat is intense enough the food is placed in the Hangi pit to cook the food. The meat is placed on the bottom of the stacked food and is cooked in massive cuts. This is to ensure that it is cooked and takes most of the heat. The chicken is placed in another metal basket on top of the pork and beef. Finally, the vegetables, stuffing and steamed dessert on top. A thin material covers the food and sacks are soaked in water to help create steam to help with the cooking. You can either than cover the food in dirt or place a plastic sheet to help cook the food. Kai (food) is different eating, with beef, chicken, pork, sweet potatoes, stuffing, fry bread and steamed pudding with a smokey, earthy flavour. A big acknowledgement to Mr White, Mrs Allen, Mrs Findlay, Mr Driscoll, Ms Lysons and Mr Crosthwaite for their help in organising this cultural experience for students and staff.

10.01.2022 Congratulations to Emily Parry who auditioned for the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) last term.
