24.01.2022 If you have a dog in your family, or regularly interact or work with them, please make learning and understanding dog body language a priority. We think it’s an essential skill, too frequently overlooked and under prioritised. During our private consultations for dogs, we almost always suggest it in our action plan for the dog. Being able to identify dog body language can help deepen your relationship through support and understanding. It can also help to prevent bites. ANY d...og, of ANY age, of ANY size and ANY breed, can bite when overwhelmed, pushed over their threshold, startled, in pain, scared or even from a combination of those things. They can also bite when their stress signals have been unheard, ignored or punished. Make it a family affair if you have children, there are lots of great resources out there on dog body language; books, videos, posters and even apps. Here is an excellent short video on dog body language to get you started.

22.01.2022 An excellent tip for starting muzzle training if youre dog can be hand shy or worried about approaching you with the muzzle. We love muzzle training, its a valuable skill for all dogs to have. 21.01.2022 Its important we progress in this mindset as a society. Its perfectly normal for dogs to not want to be touched or petted by a stranger or someone that dont know very well. Its even ok to not want to interact with someone they do know. Its also ok to want to interact with someone and then change their mind and no longer want to. This is where learning dog body language comes in, it enables you to understand the early signs of the dog wanting space, to support them and th...eir needs, and keep everyone safe. There is a sweeping assumption that all dogs are designed to be social and should want to interact with anyone and everyone, and that there is something wrong with them if they dont. We dont have the same expectation from children, so why is it any different for the dogs (cats or any other animals) we care for. If Im out and about, I dont want unsolicited attention and to be touched by people I dont know either. That doesnt make me anti-social. Im sure more often than not, MOST dogs are not interested in attention and interactions with people they dont know. They are usually happy left to continue doing their own thing or being in the social space without being touched. Lets change how we think, and educate the future generations. Teach them that dogs are for admiring, not touching and they deserve space while they are out spending time with their family, just as they are. This will make for happier dogs and people.

18.01.2022 Did you know you the Nina Ottosson food puzzle toys are not just for dry food or treats? Ash tested out the Tornado with his raw dinner. He spent 8 1/2 minutes trying to get all the food out! This from a hound who usually is done in a minute or maybe 3 with LickiMats etc. This toy also comes with two plastic bone pieces which covers two of the food chambers and locks the levels from spinning until they remove them. 17.01.2022 Available at Aldi from tomorrow! We bought one of these last year to test out as a remote feeder and for the price is a pretty good product. It does dispense more pieces than we’d like for our small dogs on its smallest serving setting, but that’s using smaller treats or kibble. Larger pieces may help to reduce that concern. Kmart also has one now available too which appears to be the exact same model but different branding, pic in comments. We’d love to hear feedback if anyone has bought the Kmart one!

11.01.2022 Hello Angus! Starting Monday right with this gorgeous boy and his family. He showed some beautiful manners today, but like all pups I visit, this kid needs more sleep. Its so easy to underestimate how much they need. At his age, 9 weeks, his limit is about 20 mins before becoming overtired. 09.01.2022 A lesson in being responsible and having your dog on leash. Particularly if your dog is NOT dog friendly. Not long before this smiley photo, Buddy was rushed at and attacked by an off leash dog. The dog completely ignored his owners instructions, stared, started creeping slowly and then ran at Buddy. Buddy was on a long leash, sniffing happily and literally didnt see the dog coming, as he had his back to him. The dog latched on, pinned him down and Buddy screamed until I co...uld get the dog off him. Thankfully he appears uninjured, covered in slobber and a heap of his own wee. The dog owner was responsible, he apologised repeatedly and waited while I checked Buddy as best I could. We tried to make best of the situation by going out into the park as we planned (because it was pretty quiet), having a sniffer walk, eating some yummy cheese, playing ball and finishing off with a couple of quick nosework searches to help decompress. We also stopped for some McBites to share with the other kids. So hopefully we turned the afternoon around into something more positive for us both. Seeing Buddys smiley face, despite being attacked not long beforehand, gives us hope he will be emotionally ok going forward. Unfortunately, Buddy can already be worried about some dogs, so an incident like this does not help. We may have extra work ahead of us now to build up his positive associations. Dog attacks are scary for everyone, dog professionals included. This could have been much much worse, it could have ended in tragedy. If it was Lulu with me instead, at her tiny size of 5kg, I hate to think about what might have happened. Please, please leash your dogs, particularly if they arent good with dogs. Another option is to muzzle them. Both are an ideal combination if you wish to get out and about in public spaces together. Allow your dog to enjoy movement and freedom while keeping things safe by having them on a long leash, so you can stop them from approaching other dogs. Some dogs will not be under reliable voice control, as seen today.
