05.01.2022 Christmas can be a time of mixed feelings for many of us. I came across this post from Karen at Hey Sigmund and was moved, so wanted to share this reflection from her. I couldn't figure out how to share this directly, but it was too good not to. "The holiday season is racing to throw its festive, tinselled arms around us. This final approach always happens so quickly doesn't it. Christmas can bring up all sorts of feelings. It's when we tend to reflect on the year that has b...een and think forward to the new one. It's when we feel the arms of our special important people around us, gratitude for what we have and for what has been, and the deep, deep joy of those moments that we write those stories that will become part of our forever. Christmas can also be a time of year we feel the presence of the past as especially strong, for better or worse. We feel the presence of memories or experiences from our own childhood Christmases, from Christmases when our lives or the people in it were different, or from that one Christmas that marks the year our lives changed. It is also when the widening ache of grief can feel especially deep, and when the fragility of life can feel especially real. It's a time when grief and joy can show up side by side at the table. If they do, we don't have to choose which one can stay. We can open our hearts to both. We can feel joy for what we have, and the loss of what was. We can feel both, side by side. What we lost will always matter, and the joy will too. When we lose people or the things that become entwined in our history, the heartbreak can feel crushing. I've been there. But we can feel deeply about the loss of that love AND we can feel also grateful that it was ours in such great measure, and that it will remain ours in that timeless part of us. We can feel grief for what was, and gratitude that it was. In the end, it seems, it can be no other way. Sadness and joy; loss, love, and gratitude - we don't have to choose which can stay, because all will find their way to us at some point. They are a part of our common humanity and the stories that become us. So I wish you a loved and safe Christmas. Whether it is love that is familiar, or waiting, or new and awkward, or strong and tender, or faded and dusty and in need of reminding. Whether it is love from family, or friends, or pets, or the love that emerges from the shared experiences within our common humanity. Whether it is love that is within reach, or love that is deep and timeless and which has taken its place in forever, I hope you feel held by it this Christmas. " - Karen, Hey Sigmund
