22.01.2022 A sweet little story for your little ones, in size, age or heart

22.01.2022 The Project described meditation and some of its benefits, using their usual flare for humour. Laughs aside, a regular mindfulness meditation practice really does lead to reductions in stress, insomnia, anxiety, burnout, irritability and does help to make us more resilient, emotionally regulated, focused, creative, innovative, productive and calm. Today, if youve never tried to meditate before, or feel like you need a little support in the form of a guided meditation App, d...ownload the Smiling Mind App, its FREE and filled with mindfulness practices for the whole family. https://10play.com.au//how-can-we-stop-los/tpv200430rwfqa

22.01.2022 Our way of life and freedoms once taken for granted, have changed in unimaginable ways. With such rapid change, its very normal to feel a sense of grieving for that was. A sense of fear for what may be. Feelings of isolation, loneliness, sadness may be arising for you, or not, we all respond in our own ways. A term, being thrown around right now is "were all in this together". Some may find this phrase cheesy, while others find deep comfort in knowing they are not alone (ev...en if they are holed-up in a space with no other humans in it). Right now, Im feeling deeply grateful, deeply privileged, deeply connected to great mindfulness teachers and communities of mindfulness teachers from around the world. The online presence of these teachers would not be there where it not for the Pandemic. Teachers like Jon Kabat-Zinn, who anyone from around the world, with the privilege of access to a good internet connection and a device from which to connect, can sit in the live, wise, compassionate presence of Jon, and thousands of other humans from across the globe, basking in a sense of deep connection to our fellow humans, a sense of all "being in this together" as we practice mindfulness, practice holding our own griefs and sorrows and hearts and collectively extending this holding, in an energetic sense at least, out to the whole of humanity. Jons online presence, and the presence of other great mindfulness teachers, bring us all together, in this great time of need. May you discover the teachings of Jon and take refuge in the incredible collective energy of these online mindfulness communities. Thank you Wisdom 2.0 for making these teachings possible. With deep care, Karen

22.01.2022 Today, deliberately choose to experience joy. Dance, skip, lay down on soft green grass and stare up into the wide open blue sky, put on your favourite music and sing like your a rock star, laugh out loud, twirl your children round and round, blow bubbles, paint, draw, take photos of nature, of pets, of anything that brings you joy. Be playful and really sense into how this makes you feel. Playfulness isnt only for kids.

22.01.2022 A POEM FOR OUR TIMES Ah, the shifts the changes, the ebbs the flows, the constant unknowing,... Covid-19 world wows. Breathe I remind myself, step away from your desk, the shifting tides, creating a well of stress. Rise, begin to walk, go outside beneath the sky, feel the suns warmth, let out a big sigh. Remove your shoes, feel the earth beneath your feet, walk slowly, walk gently, Oh! Such a treat. Pause, drop down, lay upon the grass, feel the pulse of the earth, let all worries pass. Tune into the breath, breathing in nourishing fresh air, breathe out now, soften some more, let all tension go, repair. The sun is shining, a fresh summer breeze, the birds are singing, rest now with ease. ... "A Poem for Our Times" by Karen Haddon 2021 ... 22.01.2022 This is a short guided mindfulness practice that invites you to pause and rest into present moment awareness. A tool to soothe your nervous system.

21.01.2022 "Be alive...its not the big things in life that make you happy, its to be able to see the beauty in the small things." I encourage you to see the beauty all around you today. Especially as we all grapple with our individual and collective reactions to world and local news.... May you find little joys, even on the most difficult days and in watching this clip by Green Renaissance. It made my heart sing

21.01.2022 Today, take time to sit or stand like a mountain. In this mindfulness practice, the invitation is to sense into your own inner core of strength and resilience. Your capacity to weather the storms, just like a mountain does. HOW? Stand or sit and become aware of the souls of your feet. Deliberately connect more strongly to the surface beneath you with the feet. Bring some strength into the calf muscles. Lift the knee caps slightly. Engage the muscles of the buttocks and lower ...abdomen as you draw in the belly and straighten the spine. Let the shoulders rest down, expand through the chest. Have a sense that the head is lifting up to the sky. Tuck the chin gently towards the chest and, with the arms hanging down at the sides, extend the fingers down towards the floor. Sitting or standing strong and stable in this way, begin to sense into the strength of this posture. Feeling into a sense of being strong and stable like a mountain, able to maintain this sense of stability in the midst of the chaos of life. Then, when youre ready, on an out breath, softening all of the muscles of the body, tuning into this sense of releasing and letting go. Take this sense of strength and stability into your day and deliberately engage in this practice, at various points throughout the day, to find strength and stability whenever it is needed.

21.01.2022 "Dadirri is inner, deep listening and quiet, still awareness. Dadirri recognises the deep spring that is inside us. We call on it and it calls to us. This is the gift that Australia is thirsting for..." "Our Aboriginal culture has taught us to be still and to wait. We do not try to hurry things up. We let them follow their natural course like the seasons." "When I experience dadirri, I am made whole again. I can sit on the riverbank or walk through the trees; even if someon...e close to me has passed away, I can find my peace in in this silent awareness. There is no need of words. A big part of dadirri is listening." These words are from Aboriginal writer and senior elder Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr-Baumann as is this heart touching video clip. To me there is a deep link to how Miriam-Rose describes Dadirri and the practice of mindfulness. As a modern day, white women practitioner and teacher of mindfulness, I see clearly that Aboriginal women and men have deep rivers of wisdom and understanding of connection to lands, waters, community and spirituality that we all could learn from, if only we care to listen deeply. Perhaps reading Miriam-Roses words and viewing this small clip will plant a seed within you that will bloom into a willingness to slow down and open-up to all the Aboriginal peoples of these great lands can teach us. May all Aboriginal peoples live with ease and well-being. Source: Deep listening (dadirri) - Creative Spirits, retrieved from https://www.creativespirits.info//e/deep-listening-dadirri

20.01.2022 Someone asked me, "Arent you worried about the state of the world?" I allowed myself to breathe and then I said, "What is most important is not to allow your a...nxiety about what happens in the world to fill your heart. If your heart is filled with anxiety, you will get sick, and you will not be able to help." ...Anxiety is the illness of our age. We worry about ourselves, our family, our friends, our work, and the state of the world. If we allow worry to fill our hearts, sooner or later we will get sick. - Thich Nhat Hanh

20.01.2022 Shannon Harveys latest documentary, My Year of Living Mindfully, is about to premiere and Openground Mindfulness Training have been invited to be one of the hosts. Ill let you know when registrations to view the film open. Personally, I cant wait to see the film. Its true my own meditation journey began some 20 plus years ago, however, in 2014, after a personal health scare, a friend lent me a copy of Shannons first documentary film, The Connection. Through that documen...tary I was introduced to the modern-day mindfulness movement and went on to study to teach the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course, through the Mindfulness Training Institute Australasia. This encounter with The Connection, led me on a completely new career path and now my whole life, personal and career, is spent practicing and teaching mindfulness programs and workshops to people across the lifespan. In fact, what I call work, never feels like work, rather an opportunity to live and share my passion for living mindfully with the world. So, I encourage you to register to for this premiere hosting of My Year of Living Mindfully, you may find it leads you on an expected, transformative path. 20.01.2022 Our teens are wired for connection. Thats why "isolation and social distancing" is so hard for them. My daughter arrived home from school yesterday, with all her books and a good dose of fear, sadness and despair at the realisation she wont be able to socialise and spend physical time with her friends, for "who knows how long". The sadness and distress was there for good reason. In her world "friends are everything." Yet hard choices need to be made. We are now in a place ...where just about everything is changing, at a very rapid pace. We humans take time to adapt to change, we often wiggle and squirm, kick and scream to keep things the way we like them. Teens are wired to test boundaries, rebel against or at least strongly challenge, enforced change. Thats how they get ready for the world beyond the safe cosy nests we have created for them. Yet, right now, to flatten the curve we keep hearing about, were all required to adapt and adapt quickly, were all going to have to bare pain and suffering that none of us could ever have expected. Some of the pain for parents of teens and Id say of young adults too, will be in managing our teens/young adults and keeping them at home. Love and clear boundaries are imperative so we get this right and get it right now. No second guessing the boundaries you set, no "oh maybe you can go hang out with your friends just today", we have to stand firm for the good of every human in our families, our communities, our states, our country, our world. We all have to do our bit, no matter how much wed rather not. In this article youll find some tips on keeping teens in isolation so they dont become part of the Corona Virus spread. And, if youre ok with a LOT of swearing, theres a link to a humorous video, which touches on all the serious points we need to know and understand to motivate us all to "stay at home." Stay well, stay safe, stay sane and virtually connected everyone

19.01.2022 Try these 5 Yoga Poses to calm your nervous system. The list includes 4 of my favourite poses (Childs Pose, Tree Pose, Legs up Wall Pose, Bridge Pose). Take care, and only move into a pose if it feels right for your body.

18.01.2022 I simply love being part of the wellness space and more so at this time. Nourishing, supportive, full of care for our whole global family. So many of my teachers, colleagues and friends sharing their wisdom, knowledge and teachings to support us all through these unprecedented times. Here, on his Birthday, Dr Marc shares his insights and a poetic list of 50, evidence based ways, to support the human immune system, by living fully and joyfully. Yes this is possible, even in th...e midst of a storm. May you choose some items from this list and find contentment engaging in them. For me, Im going to head across the road, to my local park and practice some yoga as Im bathed in sunshine, the sounds of birds singing and the scents of peppermint gums. May you switch off all new feeds and rise and thrive as your given permission to slow down. With care

18.01.2022 With fear and apprehension growing across the globe, learning how to navigate challenging times is something we can all benefit from. This FREE online course is a rare opportunity to learn from the tradition of peace activist and monk, Thich Nhat Hahn, whose teachings have had a profound influence on my life over the past 2 decades. https://promo.lionsroar.com/free-summit-thich-nhat-hanh/

18.01.2022 The human brain is incredibly fascinating. I think so anyway. If youre anything like me and have experienced the benefits of mindfulness in your life, or if you are considering taking up a mindfulness practice to help you ride the waves of this wobbly world we find ourselves in, Id encourage you to take a pause in your day to read Shannon Harveys latest blog. Here Shannon shares some of the insights shes gained from spending time with five scientists from what she descri...bes as "the new generation of mindfulness scientists." Id love to hear your thoughts on the article. And be sure to keep an eye out for the premier screenings of Shannons latest documentary, My Year of Living Mindfully. #mindfulness #meditation #myyearoflivingmindfully #mentalwellbeing

17.01.2022 If your household is anything like my household, right now, the adults are working from home and the kids are being home schooled. Heres a great graphic from Happiness & Its Causes with tips on how to maintain well-being, while working/schooling from home. Ive printed it in colour and popped it on the fridge. A gentle nudge to my lot on the tools and practices that can support them right now. This avoids me being seen as nagging or from them rolling their eyes and saying "y...our not trying to get me to do that mindfulness stuff again, are you?." May you all be safe, well, sane and virtually connected Happiness & Its Causes are posting lots of positive well-being tools, so pop on over and like their page.

16.01.2022 Beautiful heart-full words of gratitude from Meagan of Soundwaves, who participated in my most recent round of the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course. 16.01.2022 This year has been strange and challenging and overwhelming and chaotic in ways none of could have ever imagined. Today, is R U OK Day and Im reaching out to all my facebook followers, yes, youre all included, to ask "Are You Ok?", "Are You Really Ok?" How are you navigating this new world we find ourselves in? What supports are you leaning into? Are you really taking care of you? Have you acknowledged and felt gratitude towards your own resourcefulness and resilience? Have... you recognised how well you have managed in the face of adversity? And, if youre not OK, who is it that you will to reach out to? And, will you do it? Someone once said to me, "the strong among us use the supports around them." There is no shame in reaching out. And if its me you choose to reach out to today or any other day, Im here and ready to listen and hold space for you. For those who have friends and loved ones in areas highly affected by Covid-19, please make an extra effort to reach out to them today and everyday, I know own my friends and colleagues in Melbourne are really hurting. To share a little joy, this is a picture I took recently in local bush land, of a WA wildflower dancing in the morning sun. Macro photography has been added to my self-care toolkit, along with meditation, yoga, walks in nature and time with loved ones. What is it that you do to take care of and nurture your mental health and well-being? Are you willing to make space in your To Do list for you? May you find moments for cultivating peace, ease and joy in your day. With care, Karen xx

14.01.2022 Words from the heart for these uncertain times May you all be safe, protected, well and happy

13.01.2022 Very sad to hear that The Gawler Foundations Yarra Valley Retreat Centre has been so severely impacted by the Covid Pandemic. Acknowledging all that this healing space and the care of the staff at Gawler have offered in the community over so many decades. May time allow new and inspiring offerings to emerge from the deep collective wisdom held by those who've made The Gawler Foundation what is, and for these to be shared in new ways. With care,... Karen

13.01.2022 Today, take time to really take vivid note of the moments of good in your day. Taking in the good, deliberately inclining the mind towards noticing moments of joy, awe, happiness, even the little things that allow for a sense of contentment, help to shift our evolutionary wired bias towards taking in and holding onto the negative, into a positivity bias. We become more able to experience all the little moments of pleasure that we may have otherwise skipped over. You can take ...in the good through the enjoyment of a hot cup of coffee. The pleasantness of a smile from a child, colleague or stranger. It may be found in walking away from your desk at lunch time and taking time to really savour your food. Be creative with what you choose to tune into. Open to experiencing all the moments of good that are there, even on days when stress seems to be predominant.

12.01.2022 While putting up our Christmas decorations yesterday my kids asked where our old falling apart Advent Calendar had gone. To their horror (even though they are 18 and 20) I needed to give them the sad news that it was beyond repair and I've thrown it away. In it's place, I've printed out a copy of Action for Happiness' Kindness Calendar for December with the intention of inviting the whole family to take one of these actions each day. Today's invitation is to contact someone w...e can't be with to see if they are ok. When I consider this invitation, there are so many people we haven't been able to be with this year, our family and friends in the UK, our family and friends in the Eastern States, and so it looks like we have quite a list It may be that we decide to contact one person per day across the whole of December. May you find the invitations for acts of kindness in this calendar helpful and share this calendar far and wide. With care, Karen #DoGoodDecember

03.01.2022 When we are sick, we stay in bed and do nothing. Often we dont even eat or drink. All of our energy is directed toward healing. We need to practice resting eve...n when we are not sick. Sitting meditation, walking meditation, and mindful eating are good opportunities for resting. When you feel agitated, if you are able to go to a park or a garden, it is an opportunity for rest. If you walk slowly and remember to take it easy, if you are able to sit and do nothing from time to time, you can rest deeply and enter a state of true ease. - Thich Nhat Hanh

02.01.2022 Today we are invited to celebrate the love, care and nurturance of all of our mothers. For some there exists a loving deep bond with their mothers or grandmothers or mother figures in their lives. For others there may exist struggle, alienation or a fractured relationship.... On this day, is it possible in your heart to honor the role of all mothers in growing each generation of young people. To honor how different complexities of life, time, place or socioeconomic circumstances, perhaps influence the care and nurturing a mother is able to give. For all mothers today, honoring whatever they have been able to contribute in the circumstances they have found themselves in. May all mothers have a Happy Mothers-Day. This photo of Pablo Picassos "Motherhood" was taken in January 2020, at the National Gallery London, before the world shut down. Holding all those who are suffering in my heart.

02.01.2022 Nobel Peace Laureate, the Dalai Lama has said, This crisis shows us that we are not separate from one anothereven when we are living apart. Therefore, we all have a responsibility to exercise compassion and help. And this exercising of "compassion and help" will look different for each of us as we tap into the resources we have. ... For some it may simply be maintaining your own mental health. It could be negotiating home schooling of your kids, educating those who will inherit this world from us in the process. It may be keeping connected to family members who are isolated. Keeping an eye on an elderly or ill neighbour. Doing their shopping, taking them meals, or chatting to them (at a suitable physical distance) over the fence. If you have greater capacity and time, you may be able to volunteer for a worthy cause who need people power to keep them going. If you have the financial means, you may choose to donate funds to a genuine cause that is helping those who have lost their livelihoods. The sky is the limit and how exercising compassion and helping may look for each of us will be as unique as we are. Be creative. The power in supporting your own happiness through acts of compassion and generosity is well documented, so youll be doing good for others at the sometime as doing good for yourself. After all, selflessness (generosity of heart) trumps selfishness every-time. May you be well and safe. May you find your purpose, your passion and spread compassion where you are able. A message from the Dalai Lama, shared with us by TIME

02.01.2022 "To practice mindfulness is to become alive" to this one precious life. Begin in this moment. Become alive to the whole of your life as it unfolds in front of you. 01.01.2022 In these uncertain times, its even more important to take steps to keep your stress levels in check. Over the next 10 days, Ill share with you, simple stress reduction techniques to support your mental health and well-being. Of course, to gain any benefit, you need to do them. The first is to take time out in green space, connecting to nature, at least once a day. You might do this in your own garden, a park, or the beautiful Australian bush. ... As you take time out in nature, notice how busy your mind is with all of the happenings of yesterday and the worries about tomorrow. The invitation is to spend time experiencing the natural world through your senses. When you tune into your senses, you get to take a break from all the thinking that uses up so much energy and instead come to rest in awareness of the present moment. This is mindfulness. When youre taking a mindful nature break, use your eyes to take in the beauty all around. Your ears to hear the sounds of birds or the rustling of leaves in the trees. Your sense of touch to feel a cool breeze on your skin or the warmth of the sun. Your nose to breath in the scents of nature, perhaps of a peppermint gum, a eucalypt, a rose or frangipani flower. Bathing in nature as a way to reduce stress and give your hyper-vigilant nervous system a rest. This is a practice the Japanese have engaged in for centuries, they call it "forest bathing".
