25.01.2022 Quite some time has passed since my last post. And quite some global life events have occurred since my last post too; a global pandemic to name but a major player. I have been an observer and participant in many such discussions surrounding the causes, reasons, consequences, fears, of this global event we have all been touched by. I have witnessed the various helpful and unhelpful coping strategies some of us have employed at various points of this time too. Myself included...! The attached Ted Talk speaker is quite an inspiring woman, who uses her own touching story to outline some basic and helpful strategies some of us may find useful during such a challenging time in our lives today. 25.01.2022 Powerful TEDx talk on addiction and the impact of early childhood trauma on brain development. I could listen to Dr. Gabor Mate speak all day.

25.01.2022 Psychologists have long been aware that the manner in which we approach our emotions has an impact on all that is important to us. Our behaviours, relationships, education, occupation, health, and general life satisfaction, all depend on our emotional reactivity. This TED talk clearly outlines the importance of emotional flexibility when dealing with life stressors. The importance of our values in guiding our decision-making is also highlighted. Parents, teachers, team leaders, and well generally anyone who wants to lead a more mindful and insightful life, would benefit from this talk. Teaching such skills of emotional agility to our children is also a very important part of parenting and teaching alike.

24.01.2022 Open and honest letter written by Professor Steve Robson, regarding his own experience with significant mental health concerns as a young doctor 30 years ago. I am reluctant to use the word brave, as why should those who devote so much of their lives to assisting others feel shame and embarrassment when they require some support themselves. Hopefully in exposing ones own vulnerability, others may be encouraged to receive support themselves and not suffer in silence...

24.01.2022 Welcome 2019! My first post this year is devoted to relationships. I have many clients who feel disconnected, alone, or are questioning their current relationships be it family, friendship, work, or intimate. Relationships are all around us, and feeling connected is actually vital for our well being and mental health. It is all too easy to often look at the role that others play in our relationship problems, but sometimes we need to look deeper into ourselves and our own his...tory. This podcast is also helpful for those questioning whether their current intimate relationship is the right one for them; a common presenting issue for many of my clients.

22.01.2022 Came across this great book on addictions, titled Addicted?. Authors have extensive experience in drug and alcohol services in Australia. A very easy, compassionate, and relevant read for professionals, those struggling with/vulnerable to addictions, and family and friends. Provides a background history, however also tangible strategies you can use in the area of addictions. While the focus is predominantly on alcohol and drugs, also applies to other addictions such as smartphones, sex, gaming, social media and gambling.

20.01.2022 As the mother of a young teenage boy, and a therapist who over the years through my own practise have witnessed that a greater proportion of women attend therapy then men, this picture really resonated with me. Simple, yet powerful message.

18.01.2022 One of the most helpful things we can begin to do when dealing with life stressors, and that will serve to promote our mental health, is to rally up our support crew (personal & professional) and begin to talk about our concerns, worries and life stories. It is the repression, denial and avoidance of our problems that often makes things worse than the original problem itself. When you begin to share the burden you have been carrying, you are likely to feel less alone ...in your journey, and may even begin to feel less overwhelmed. By verbalising your story, you may even begin to gain a different perspective than the one you had been carrying with you. And by gaining a different perspective, you may even begin to think of ways of possibly working towards improving your life. How eloquently has Maya Angelou made this point here!

15.01.2022 Came across this Beyond Blue post today, which reinforces my post from yesterday regarding the importance of mental health in our boys and men also.

07.01.2022 Another great read. Parents, teachers, coaches, anyone in a relationship....well basically anyone can benefit from reading this book. This book explains why our achievements in life are not only based on inherent ability and talent, but also on whether we approach life with a fixed or growth mindset. Such an important lesson to pass onto our children especially; that setbacks and apparent mistakes can be seen as challenges, a normal part of life, and something that can be addressed in order to grow and develop in all facets of our lives.

03.01.2022 Has anyone tried to motivate themselves ,or even someone in their lives, by shaming them? Did this approach work? Most likely the answer is No, or at least the outcome was likely not sustained. This TED talk will hopefully reveal to you why you should stop using such shaming dialogue on yourself or others. Shame is a difficult emotion that underlies addiction, depression, self-loathing, violence and even narcissism. Shame is an intensely painful feeling in which one believes they are flawed or unworthy. Researchers such as Brene Brown do not see shame as helpful or productive, but rather as the source of destructive and hurtful behaviour. I have personally found that shame underlies a lot of my clients own suffering. https://www.ted.com/talks/brene_brown_listening_to_shame
