25.01.2022 Regular practice of meditation is expanding the inner stillness from a fleeting experience to occupy an increasingly larger part of one's life. Tolle says that the inner peace and stillness is not something to be achieved in future. It is already there in us. It needs to be let out from where it is buried. It is not out there. Joy is the natural state for all of us. We were NOT born to be unhappy and none of us wants to be unhappy either. Unhappiness is something we unconsciously create in our lives. If we get out of their way ‘happiness and joy’ can fill our lives. Is it not surprising that we actually put in an effort to create and maintain unhappiness in our lives whereas we are unable to allow happiness and peace to just come out and fill our lives?

08.01.2022 I am convinced that the way to being in a state of joy is to control my thoughts. ‘Controlling’, however, implies using some kind of force and it won’t do. Tolle says in his very influential book ‘Power of Now’ that you cannot fight the darkness. What you can do is switch on a light and the darkness disappears. Meditation helps you do that. It helps you throw the switch. The switch is awakening the ‘real you’, your ‘self’. You do not see your ‘self’ but know it is there. It h...as been there all the time inside you. Since you were born it has been steadfastly clinging to you. It has been sitting inside you all the time but has been rendered impotent by the scars left by your life experiences. The scarring is NOT a result of what happened to you but how you have interpreted them. The scars not only distort your past but crack the lens through which you see your future. Your thoughts pluck your past perceptions and use them to create anxiety about your future. Awakening your ‘self’ means not allowing your perceptions of your past to create fear about your future and spoiling your present. The present is all you have. Deepak Chopra says future is a mystery and the past is history. All that you have is the present and is it not insane to ‘screw’ it up?

05.01.2022 Many a time we have acrimonious fights with those we love deeply. Often the issues that provoke such fights are trivial. In fact, after a full-blown quarrel when we have cooled down we regret that we fought over a silly inconsequential issue. But it does not stop us from doing that again and again and again. When we are angry we almost feel like strangling the other person. This person is, more often than not, one whom we loved and love dearly. But at that moment raw emotions... take over. 05.01.2022 Do we really see things as they are or see what we want to see? Every event that we encounter in the present moment is filtered through the past and influences our perceptions, thoughts, emotions and behaviour. In his fantastic book Thinking, Fast and Slow, Daniel Kahneman, a Nobel Prize winner, refers to this as the ‘Halo Effect’ which he defines as the tendency to like (or dislike) everything about a person- including things that you have not observed. The emotions that a...re attached to our first impressions of a person generally shape our interpretations of that person’s subsequent behaviour. By the way, Thinking, Fast and Slow is a fantastic book. Get it and read it if you can. It could potentially reduce your habitual way of thinking. Kahneman coined an acronym, WYSIATI (What You See Is All There Is), to describe what we can do to overcome this tendency. Mindfulness training helps you do exactly thatsee things as they are and not through lenses of our preconceived notions, prejudices, likes and dislikes. See more
