12.01.2022 9 Attitudes of Mindfulness (from Jon Kabat-Zinn) - Attitude 4- Letting go (or let it be) Remember that song 'Let it go' from Frozen? (My daughter plays it on repeat, so it's often stuck in my head!) Elsa had a point! Often if you're aware of an unpleasant thought, emotion or sensation, the temptation is to push it away, ignoring it and distracting ourselves with something, hoping to bury it. Often this has the opposite effect. When we push it away, it tends to get bigger and... bigger, until you accept it and be with it for a while. In this way letting go is actually about letting it be. Another way to look at it is to let go of clinging and grasping onto what we want. Sometimes we just need to put out the 'welcome' mat for whatever is there and just let it be or let it go. Think of thoughts like clouds in the sky, and instead of pushing them away, we acknowledge they are there, let them be, and then, if you can, let them pass in their own time, and gently come back to the breath. 12.01.2022 9 Attitudes of Mindfulness (from Jon Kabat-Zinn) - Attitude 5- Trust When was the last time you walked or drove on a bridge? How did you go on the bridge knowing that at any time it could fall down? (although it's highly unlikely to). The answer is trust - trusting (consciously or not) that the bridge would hold you. This highlights how important trust is in our lives - we need to be able to trust in order to move forward and live our lives fully. That doesn't mean trusting o...thers naively - sometimes our inner wisdom is also important. But if we come from a place of trust, others generally will trust us too. It all starts with trusting ourselves... Trusting that the heart will keep beating, and that the next breath will come. Trusting that thoughts and emotions will come and eventually go, particularly if we practice acceptance and non-judgement. They are not permanent. Trusting that everything you need is within you right now Image by @steeleism #mindfulness #trust #teacheresources #meditation #jonkabatzinn #mindfulschools #wateachers #perthteacher #trustyourself #trustyourself
