16.01.2022 What is an Aged Care or Residential Care Placement Consultant? Many people didnt know there was such a role. Its a small field and our role is to assist families and loved ones to find residential care (nursing homes older language). We help with narrowing down suitable places that take into account many different factors. It is not an easy role, because as we know finding the right residential care to meet different care needs is often time consuming and daunting. If we... look at the list outlined on the Aged Care Crisis website, we can see that it is a mine field. https://www.agedcarecrisis.com/resou/nursing-home-checklist You are welcome to look at some of the criteria that may make deciding on the right home a little easier. How do I recommend a place and is that a guarantee that it is the best place?? I dont know, but what I do know is that I use a number of strategies to determine a recommendation and my clinical and professional judgement regarding a place and sometimes it is also that gut feeling. When I take a tour, I definitely ask the BIG Questions and one of them is: 1) Nursing Staff Ratio (remember currently there is no formal laws regarding staff to resident ratio) How many qualified nursing staff are on throughout a 24 hour period? Does every older person need a registered nurse throughout the night, that depends on an individual needs? If that is important to you and your family then a lot of residential care places have a 24-hour registered nurse on duty. Many places however do not have an RN, EN or NA on duty after 4 pm. Keep that in mind. I visited a fantastic low care center today without nursing throughout the night or weekends. Would I recommend this center? This depends on whether the client had very low care needs. It ticks a lot of other boxes and some of those included small, homely, reputable company, clean, smiling carers, lots of activities and outings, large homely rooms with access directly outside. No sanctions. I will follow up on some other BIG Questions and Big Considerations soon. If you want any further information or just to nut out some of the complexities of residential care please dont hesitate to email or call me.

14.01.2022 I just finished reading a Submission to the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality & Safety looking at the merits of FIXED STAFFING RATIOs by Ansell Strategic. https://www.ansellstrategic.com.au//Royal-Commission-Submi It provides a lot of food for thought when we think about the complexity of staffing in residential care centers and the idea of fixed staff ratios. Its not simple and this paper outlines some of these issues. ... Other staff that play important roles in residential care are: physiotherapists (some 5 days per week), occupational therapists, along with physiotherapy assistants and occupations therapy assistants, along with carers and other functional staff such as cleaners, laundry and lifestyle workers to meet the care needs of there residents. Many places have family members who volunteer their time and this always sits well with me. Some have activities in the early-evening afternoon that engages and calms residents who may display sun-downing behaviors associated with dementia. They also provide activities on the weekends for social interaction. Some have sensory rooms, using aromatherapy, massage, sensory water and music features to assist with providing a supportive place to live. Look for those features that stand out and may improve the quality of life of your loved one. They are not just provided by the more expensive residential care places.
