25.01.2022 This tweet from Dr. Paul T Wong is brilliant! It succinctly and clearly explains the essence of the Broaden & Build theory. #positiveemotions #emotionalintelligence #humansbeingbetterhumans

25.01.2022 Each of us have a multitude of different strengths, values and interests. "Quality and excellence are not uniform; each of us excels in our own ways. But we must try to excel. For, when we do, we flourish." This Greek word exemplifies playing to your strengths in the pursuit of success (which fits in very nicely with your Landscape for Flourishing btw ). In classical Greece "this term spoke to the fulfilment of ones potential and purpose", and while arete "does not necessar...ily mean attaining excellence. It just means doing your best in ways that remain true to who you are..." #arete #happinessdictionary #flourishing - Definition and excerpts from The Happiness Dictionary by Dr. Tim Lomas.

24.01.2022 First of all we are absolutely not dissing yoga. We love yoga, it is fabulous. BUT Yoga is NOT mindfulness. The reason we want to make that distinction is because yoga is a body based practice and it doesnt actually cultivate any type of mental capacity.... Were not saying you dont feel fantastic afterwards, or that you arent relaxed, or that you dont develop a whole heap of benefits from yoga because you absolutely do. There are just lots of people who engage with a yoga practice in the hope that it will psychologically give them sustained benefits, yet they find that it doesnt. Its very good while they are doing yoga but they arent necessarily getting those sustained benefits outside of their yoga sessions. There is absolutely nothing bad about yoga, its just that it often doesnt meet those expectations around psychological change or mental capacity but thats because thats not what yoga focuses on. #mindfulnesss #mindfulnesspractices #yoga #yogapractice

24.01.2022 We get asked about what we do as an organisation quite a bit, the answer = we specialise in the science of human flourishing. Now, you have probably heard us use that phrase before but what does it mean? Well its all about how we develop the version of ourselves that we wish to be? AND create an environment around us and around other people where we can actually be our best selves?... The science of human flourishing is really about establishing an understanding of WHO we wish to be in the world and HOW we wish to be in the world, and then what we need to do to make that easier. Its an active pursuit as opposed to a passive one. Unicorns and rainbows are not included Got any questions about the science of human flourishing? Let us know in the comments. #flourishing #humansbeingbetterhumans

22.01.2022 "At its best, human interaction is like a dance. We move with balletic grace, our movements in perfect synchrony. This doesn't mean that we must rigidly conform to tightly choreographed routines. There is still room for spontaneity. Indeed, our most meaningful encounters tend to feel pristine and fresh, as if springing into life at that precise moment. Yet even - or especially -then, our movements somehow align perfectly with our partner's. We intuit their intentions perfectly, a fraction of a second before they act, and respond accordingly. The dance is fluid, supple, poetry in motion." - Excerpt and definition by Dr Tim Lomas from The Happiness Dictionary

21.01.2022 We have another mindfulness myth busting post for you today... Meditation and mindfulness are actually the same thing. There is no difference between a meditation practice and a mindfulness practice. ... The two terms are completely interchangeable, and going right back to the 2,500 years worth of very specifically documented practice those two terms are used interchangeably. #mindfulness #meditation #mythbusting

19.01.2022 Monday Mindfulness Myth Busting... Very few people can do the full lotus - this includes monastics and masters of mindfulness practice.... People sitting crossed legged with their fingers pointed up, AKA the full lotus, is a common image that we see BUT there is actually no single Eastern contemplative tradition in the world where you point your fingers up. Thats just some bit of mythical non-truth that somebody created and it has been embedded in everyones psyche ever since. #mindfulness #mindfulnesspractice #MythBustingMonday #meditation

18.01.2022 We love this word as it is all about meaning and purpose. "Here, were not talking about the meaning of life in grand, metaphysical terms but rather the purpose and significance of individual peoples lives... This has been translated as reason for being, capturing the sense that life is good and meaningful and that its worthwhile to continue living."... #ikigai #meaningandpurpose #happinessdictionary #happiness - Definition and excerpt from The Happiness Dictionary by Dr. Tim Lomas.

18.01.2022 This is an excerpt from our Authentic Mindfulness webinar that we ran as part of our Healthy Minds Webinar Series recently. In this video Mel busts lots of common misconceptions that people may have about mindfulness. Are there any light bulb moments you had after listening to this? Did you have any of these beliefs beforehand? Let us know in the comments below.... #mindfulness #mindfulnesspractice #mindfulnessmyths #humansbeingbetterhumans

18.01.2022 Just a reminder in case you missed this announcement about the Positivity Portfolio Project Follow the link in our original post below to register your interest.

18.01.2022 As 2021 is getting started and many of you may be setting goals for the year, we thought this video from The Hero Round Table of Mel was a great reminder for when you are achieving your goals and some or all areas of your Landscape for Flourishing are clicking: Who do you share it with? Do they celebrate with you? Do you pause and savour it?... Do you reflect upon your contribution? Do you reflect upon others' contributions? Do you express gratitude? #humansbeingbetterhumans

18.01.2022 This post is the last in our series on mindfulness myth busting and is probably the biggest mindfulness myth that has been brought about in western practices, where you just watch what is happening without judging. Mindfulness practice is all about judgement. If you take the judgement out of mindfulness, then you have stripped out a significant amount of potential benefit that you are supposed to be able to tap into from authentic practices. In authentic mindfulness practice ...we dont use the word "judgement", we use the terms "discernment" and "wisdom". These are the terms that we use to describe the process we are going through. So just imagine, on an increasingly regular occurrence you are having a recurring thought about how annoying a particular person in your life is. If you are doing a mindfulness practice around your feelings for that individual, and it is a McMindfulness practice, then what you are going to learn is to just allow those thoughts to come and go, and not do anything about them. Which means two things: 1. You dont do any analysis on the fact that its probably not helpful for you, or helpful for that individual, that you keep having thoughts about them being annoying. 2. Guess what you get really good at the more you practice? Having thoughts about how annoying you find that person. And not only that, you now get really good at being able to SEE the annoying things that they do. The capacity that you are actually building, if it doesnt come with some discernment or some judgement where you say to yourself "Is that a helpful thought to have? Is that a useful thought? Does that thought enhance my wellbeing and is it also good for that persons wellbeing?", you are not actually deriving the benefit of training your mind to do something different. Please understand that the whole purpose of doing mindfulness practice is for you to be wise and to discern the things that your mind gets up to which are good for you, and which are the things that your mind gets up to that are actually not helpful at all. This is a really, really important capacity of mindfulness, and is one of the most important myths that we wanted to bust.

17.01.2022 You can burn incense if you want to. We love it, so we burn incense all of the time but you may have terrible hay fever or cant stand the smell. Its got nothing to do with mindfulness practice, so please dont put the two together as being vital. Incense can certainly enhance the environment that you might be in while youre doing your mindfulness practice but its not necessary. Burn incense because you like it ... #mindfulness #mindfulnesspractice #mythbusting

16.01.2022 You will often hear us talk about human flourishing, so we wanted to provide this little reminder about a couple of important key points when it comes to this science... The science of human flourishing uses a strengths-based approach to get the best from people by investing in activities that discover the best of someone and to then provide an environment that allows that best to shine. So the focus fundamentally shifts from changing humans to changing the environment i...n which humans do their thing. AND It must be remembered that the science of human flourishing is about humans in any and all contexts, not just at work! #landscapeforflourishing #humansbeingbetterhumans #flourishing

15.01.2022 This one is from an interview with Positive Psychology News in 2015, and gives you just a very small insight into Dr. Barbara Fredrickson's motivations behind her research of positive emotions... #positiveemotions #PositivePsychology

15.01.2022 So a little bit of background on this video... I (DJ, the red head that you see on this timeline every now and then) asked Mel to record her thoughts on the comments made by Ita Buttrose in the media not long ago about resilience in millenials, and then for Mel to also discuss resilience in general. Mel recorded this video with the thought that I would do cuts of bits and pieces in the video on different aspects of resilience but what Mel came out with totally off the cuff wa...s 20+ minutes of pure gold. Mel is just talking to camera in this one so you can have the audio going on in the background so I highly, highly recommend you give it a listen or watch! | - The science shows that resilience is an important part of our toolkit as human beings but there is no one single recipe for resilience. We must remind ourselves that context is key! At Mind Insurance, we believe that too often the context piece of resilience is overlooked. It is incredibly important to be able to understand that not everybodys ability to build a capacity for resilience is the same. And there isnt just one thing that individuals need to develop in order to build that capacity. Resilience is actually an outcome of a whole bunch of different and equally important things, such as: - Positive emotions - Post traumatic growth - Meaning and purpose - Growth mindset - Strengths development This is the very first video in an ad-hoc series that we have lovingly called Mel-ology. We hope you enjoy it. Please let us know if you have any questions in the comments below.

14.01.2022 #love Another little gem from Love 2.0 by Dr. Barbara Fredrickson.

12.01.2022 Like yoga, relaxation is body based and its an important component of mindfulness practice but it is not actually mindfulness. If you go to relaxation classes or do any guided relaxation practices, just understand thats exactly what they are. There is nothing wrong with them, they are very good for you and youll be getting some fantastic benefits from them but there is a limit to the benefits you can get from relaxation if you are wanting to translate across into building ...mental capability, as you wont be developing that capacity. BUT... Here is the really fabulous trick, the foundational element of really great mindfulness practice is the ability to be able to relax your body. So, is it an important part of mindfulness? Absolutely! Is it mindfulness? No its not, and its an important differentiation to make. #mindfulness #meditation #mythbusting

11.01.2022 Team Member Spotlight Today we wanted to put the spotlight onto one of our team members, Aaron (aka. Az) - doesnt he look dapper in this photo Aaron works behind the scenes at Mind Insurance across a range of different projects. Having a background in IT he supports us on a daily basis across a range of technical bits and pieces that we require, as well as working on the Happiness Lab, Academy, our websites and providing any technical support for our wonderful custom...ers. He also supports DJ with absolutely everything else - which DJ is eternally grateful for (editors note: this may or may not be written by DJ). Aaron loves playing video games, is passionate about his car (even if its still not fixed currently), and is an avid animal lover. We couldnt do what we do without you Az, thank you

09.01.2022 A blank mind = dead A common misconception, and a myth that we want to bust, is that mindfulness is about making your mind blank. In fact, your mind is active all of the time.... Mindfulness is actually about you being in control of what your mind does, as opposed to your mind being scattered and all over the place. Weve got more mindfulness myths to bust so keep an eye out for our video over the weekend #mindfulness #mythbusting #mindfulnessmyths #mindfulnesspractice

08.01.2022 Just a little PSA for you today! Resilience is a capacity that we all have, and in actual fact weve got natural resilience built in to ourselves as human beings. Its just that it isnt automatic that everybody gets a great big giant bucket filled with resilience that lasts for a long time. We have to actually cultivate our stores of resilience, continue to make sure that those stores are healthy AND we also have to cultivate the skills in order to be able to access those st...ores. So a reminder... We are all incredibly resilient. Resilience is just one of those things that we need to make sure we keep cultivating in our Landscape for Flourishing. #humansbeingbetterhumans #resilience

07.01.2022 In this video Mel and DJ are chatting about how practices related to the domain of Attention & Awareness can enhance our wellbeing. Little activities that are really simple and accessible to everybody, when done consistently can result in moments of flourishing. Its not necessarily some big transformational moment. There are three key things that really helps when it comes to attention and awareness practices that contribute positively to our wellbeing:... 1 Creating awareness about these activities 2 The sorts of activities we choose to partake in 3 Discipline to remind ourselves to participate in those activities #attentionandawareness #mindfulness #gratitude #humansbeingbetterhumans

06.01.2022 Punch "mindfulness" or "meditation" into Google images and youll find someone sitting crossed legged on a cushion with their fingers pointed to the sky [check out our last Mindfulness Myth Busting post about the full lotus position ]. You can do mindfulness practice sitting on the floor, sitting in a chair, standing or lying down - you can even do it while walking! Its a myth that you have to sit on a cushion in order to be able to practice and benefit from mindfulness.... #mindfulness #mindfulnesspractice #meditation #mythbusting

04.01.2022 We felt like this is an apt word to share currently from The Happiness Dictionary. - "We perennially find ourselves thrown into situations that are not of our choosing - from the haphazard events that make up everyday life to more fundamental constraining factors, such as the place and time of our birth. Yet, still, we must try to make the most of these circumstances."... - Definition and excerpts from The Happiness Dictionary by Dr. Tim Lomas. #happinessdictionary #geworfenheit

04.01.2022 "Specifically, it is a uniquely benevolent, compassionate and, crucially, non-exclusive form of love. This sets it apart from the unconditional and selfless love that parents usually feel towards their children specifically, such that they would sacrifice themselves to protect them from harm. By contrast, agáp is more a universal love, if you will, directed towards everyone." - Excerpt and definition from The Happiness Dictionary by Dr Tim Lomas on his chapter about Love.... #love #humansbeingbetterhumans #happinessdictionary

02.01.2022 There is a bit of a myth out there that mindfulness is easy. Its just sitting still, so how hard can it be? Well, mindfulness is not easy. It is actually hard and requires a lot of effort! Many people who are hoping that, potentially, a mindfulness practice of just a few minutes a day is going to be a silver bullet or quick fix to all of the difficulties that they might be experiencing are usually pretty disappointed and they give up quite quickly because they go "oh no, thi...s is actually pretty hard". We need to embrace the fact that just like any skill that we try and master there are elements of the skill that we find quite easy to pick up and there are also elements of any skill that are really tricky, and they take us a long time to master at the level we desire, and mindfulness practice is no different. #mindfulness #mindfulnesspractice #meditation

02.01.2022 "Flourishing and living life to the full." We have another Greek word from The Happiness Dictionary today and we low key love this one because its all about flourishing and humans being their best In ancient Greek this word "originally described the happiness that was associated with the presence or guidance of a benevolent daimon (spirit)" and was then later redefined by Aristotle as "activity of the soul in accordance with virtue".... Now in modern times it encompasses so much more: "learning to be content with our lot; accepting situations calmly; revelling in pleasure; loving and being loved; connecting and living in communion with others; savouring the beauty that graces our lives; welcoming the full spectrum of human emotions, including those that are bittersweet; understanding the world and our place within it; gaining some conception of the sacred; and being a good person while always striving to be a better one." And the author of The Happiness Dictionary, Dr. Tim Lomas, sums up his definition of this word perfectly... "For these are the qualities we must strive for in whatever time we are given." - Definition and excerpts from The Happiness Dictionary by Dr. Tim Lomas #eudaimonia #happinessdictionary #flourishing #humansbeingbetterhumans

01.01.2022 Mindfulness is NOT religious. The reality is that the scientific practice of mindfulness comes from Eastern contemplative traditions. Mindfulness is a very well documented practice of mind training which is actually completely free of any type of religious flavour or dogma. It just so happens that all of the greatest experts, and the ones who have practised the most, documented those practices the most, and developed those practices happen to stem from Eastern traditions.... Even people from Eastern contemplative traditions do not see the practice of mindfulness as being associated with religion, they see it as a distinct scientific method for developing mental capability. You do not have to have a belief system to be successful at mindfulness and receive the benefits from it OR you can have any belief system and mindfulness will still work for you. #mindfulness #mindfulnesspractice #meditation
