Here is how y...ou can increase your influence with your Kids to persuade them to do what you want... ----------------------------- THE SET-UP - #1 QUESTION: ----------------------------- Ask "On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 meaning Not Ready At All, and 10 meaning I'm Ready Now, How ready are you to clean your room?" Your kid is likely to give you a low score, maybe a 3. ----------------------------- THE COUNTER-INTUITIVE #2 QUESTION: ----------------------------- Next ask "Ok, great so you are a 3. Why didn't you choose a lower number?" This now encourages the child to explain & justify why they didn't choose a lower number, often raising positive arguments for why they should do that thing, convincing themselves of the benefits for doing it. ----------------------------- WHY DOES IT WORK: ----------------------------- Everyone believes their own reasons for doing something more strongly and will adhere to these beliefs more often than being told what to do or how to do it. This framework for questioning helps the person you are speaking with elicit their own self-evident reasons. ----------------------------- BUT WHAT IF THEY SAY A 1? ----------------------------- If your child says they are a 1 then you respond with... "What can I do to help you become a 2?" You child might respond with... "Well, if you could help me then I could get it started" This helps identify the main obstacle between your child and them getting started. This information now allows you to choose your next course of action being better informed. ----------------------------- THE KEY CONCEPT: ----------------------------- Persuasion is not about 'doing something' to other person. It's actually better to create the discussion that allows people to bring up their own reasons for doing something. ----------------------------- MASTERY OF IT'S USE: ----------------------------- Anything that is overused becomes ineffective, so use this technique infrequently when it matters most. Also, this technique is not just limited to kids. Imagine using this approach with other people you want to influence!
