With the start of a new year, many people are making New Year’s resolutions, such as starting new healthy practices and working on goals they’d like to achieve. 15.01.2022 October is Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness month. We remember the babies born sleeping, those we carried but never held, those we held but could not take home, and those who came home but could not stay. Speak out about pregnancy loss In this article, Jessica Grose at the New York Times talks about the grief, anger, envy, relief and guilt that can be experienced after a miscarriage. All of these feelings are common reactions to loss.

11.01.2022 Now more than ever, it’s so important to be there for each other. This means checking in on the people in your lives & asking how they are doing. Head over to the R U OK website for useful steps on what you can say after this important question. It really could change a life https://www.ruok.org.au/how-to-ask

10.01.2022 Parents often notice gender differences in children’s behaviour with boys behaviour often being on the move & fidgety. Read this article by Five First Years to understand the neurological differences between girls & boys, & learn how to help support & nurture boys & their physicality.

08.01.2022 Did you know that suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians aged between 15 and 44 years old? The leading cause of death... More than motor vehicle accidents, other non-intentional accidents, cancer, heart disease, and respiratory disease. It is true that mental health difficulties are more discussed in the media & more openly talked about in our communities these days, but we still have a long way to go to make mental health services accessible, known about, and... prioritised in a persons’ health regime. R U OK day is such an important initiative to raise awareness. It has highlighted how important it is to connect to the people in our lives & ask them how they are doing; to listen without judgement or criticism; to encourage them to use their coping strategies that have worked in the past; to help them get help from mental health professionals; and to remember to check in on them later & show them you care.

06.01.2022 Dr Laurenne See was fortunate enough to attend this 2-day training workshop in Brisbane this week The Body Keeps the Score: Trauma, Attachment & Neuroscience by the acclaimed Dr Bessel van der Kolk. At Mind on Health, we see a large number of clients presenting with developmental trauma (such as abuse or neglect in childhood) &/or trauma that results from discrete traumatic experiences (such as an accident or assault). Trauma therapy can help you to recover from the physical, emotional, cognitive (thinking), and behavioural (what you do) symptoms of trauma.

05.01.2022 In February 2020, our lives changed. Familiar things that we could count on, and that we didn’t give much thought to like being able to hug our loved ones or purchase essential groceries were all of a sudden taken away. And all of this was happening as a result of a tiny microbe. Click on the below link to read about pandemic anxiety. Learn about what it is and how we can develop our ability to tolerate distress and overcome our intolerance of uncertainty. https://mindonhealth.com.au/pandemic-anxiety/

04.01.2022 R U Ok Day! A wonderful reminder to check in, ask the question R U OK, and support those in your lives by connecting, listening & understanding - today & every day. Here's how..... https://www.ruok.org.au/how-to-ask

03.01.2022 If you struggle with your emotions, thoughts, worries, or memories, read the following article to learn the art of mindfulness. Learn how to ‘be with’ your thoughts and feelings, to make room for them to come and go, rather than resist, follow, or feed them with more attention than they deserve. http://mindonhealth.com.au/mindful-thriving/

02.01.2022 As John Gottman says Getting to know your spouse is a life long process so try these different conversation starters to stay connected...

02.01.2022 Physical affection is so important for both babies and their parents. You can never ‘spoil’ your baby with holding him/her too much. This study shows how hugs help both babies & parents to feel calm & decrease their stress response.

01.01.2022 What a few weeks it has been! The outbreak of coronavirus has been felt by people far and wide, with adults & children experiencing some fear and anxiety. How you experience stressful situations can be impacted by your life experiences, your coping strategies, the individual characteristics that make you ‘you’, and the community you live in. You may notice:-... - Worries about your own health or that of your loved ones - Difficulty relaxing or ‘winding down’ - Increase/decrease in sleep - Increase/decrease in appetite & food intake - Low or fluctuating mood - Irritability or being more inclined to anger quickly - Difficulty concentrating - Increased use of alcohol, tobacco or other dugs. Coping with stress can help you & your loved ones feel stronger. Sometimes we are exposed to situations we can’t control, but it can be helpful to focus on the things we can control. The things we CAN control include:- - taking care of yourself & loved ones - looking after your physical health, e.g. walks, exercise, healthy eating, reduce alcohol & smoking. - engaging in pleasurable activities. - And if you are in self-isolation, this could mean taking a long, warm shower; breathing deep breaths in your bedroom; noticing the things in your environment that you are grateful for; thinking about the people in your life you are grateful for; contacting friends & loved ones on phone or internet to remain connected; time in your back yard; watching TV or reading, etc. If we can be of any assistance, please discuss with our reception & if you cannot attend the practice due to self-isolation, phone or video sessions may be available to you. From all of us at Mind on Health, we wish you good health
