20.01.2022 OCD currently affects 2% of people in Australia. It involves repetitive unwanted, intrusive thoughts/images/impulses that are difficult to simply shake off (referred to as obsessions), and/or irrational, excessive urges to do certain actions/mental acts, where the urge is also very difficult to resist (referred to as compulsions). Many people with OCD experience both obsessions and compulsions, but it is possible to have only one or the other. Obsessions are not just worr...ies about everyday concerns, and compulsions are not just habits. The symptoms of OCD are usually upsetting or embarrassing. People with OCD perform rituals to reduce their anxiety or believing it will prevent something bad from happening, Unfortunately the relief is only temporary and soon they find they have to perform the ritual again and again to get some relief. Some types of obsessions can include: - Fear of contamination from germs, dirt, toxins and other substances - Fears of harm to self or others - Intrusive sexual, blasphemous, or violent thoughts - Concerns with symmetry, order and routine - Concerns about illness or religious issue Some types of compulsions can include: - Excessive hand washing or cleaning the body - Repeated counting and ordering of objects - Excessive checking of locks, electrical appliances, and other things associated with safety - Touching, tapping, counting or moving in a certain way or a certain number of times - Mentally repeating words or numbers a certain amount of times. As always, it is important to refrain from self-diagnosing. Please consult with your GP or a Psychologist if you are experiencing any of these symptoms, where it is affecting your ability to function on a day to day basis. #ocd #mindwise #mentalhealth

16.01.2022 Many of us know how important R U OK’s vision is, which is to prevent suicide by encouraging people to ask their family and friends if they are ok. Suicide is the leading cause of death for young adults aged 15 to 34 years (ABS). According to R U OK? Spokesperson Jaelea Skehan, many people choose to end their life because they feel depressed but are too afraid to open up about their feelings. That’s why the organisation encourages people to start a conversation with someone i...f they are worried that they might be thinking about suicide. As reinforced by Janina Nearn, the chief executive and co-founder of R U OK? we need to take the time to have those meaningful conversations R U OK? Supporters can race for them this September 17th at the Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon, which will take place in Sydney. The 21.1 km race will start on College St and will run across Sydney’s major landmarks, including the Opera House, Harbour Bridge and Pyrmont Peninsula. It will then finish in Hyde Park. This is a great opportunity to raise money and awareness for the R U OK? cause, by collecting donations and choosing to run for them on the day. By taking part in the race and fundraising for R U OK? you can help the organisation do more to inspire people to start that conversation that could save a life. So be sure to put on your black and yellow shirt this Thursday 17th September and help support R U OK?’s incredible cause! 15.01.2022 If you broke your leg, you would likely rush to the closest emergency room. If you wanted to build muscles, you would usually eat more protein-based foods. So why is it that so many of us are likely to do zilch, zero, nada when it comes looking after our mental health? Every day we are inundated with competing priorities demanding our attention and time. We get caught up in the rat race of life, and something as important as looking after our mental well-being gets left behin...d. Taking time out to prioritise mental wellness is an investment that will pay off. Getting started isn’t as complicated as some may think. For example, you can: 1. Ensure you are getting plenty of sleep 2. Take time out to do something small you enjoy each day, even if for a short time 3. Eat well, it’s as important for our bodies as our minds 4. Go outside and get some sunlight 5. Connect with others and talk to a qualified therapist

13.01.2022 If I tell someone, they won’t listen, They’ll judge me, They won’t understand What will everyone think? Many victims of domestic violence do not report it, and they do not seek help because of the stigma. Domestic violence is a serious problem in Australia: 1 in 6 women and 1 in 16 men have experienced physical and/or sexual violence by a current or previous cohabiting partner since the age of 15 years (ABS Personal Safety Survey 2017). ... Despite this, there remains a significant stigma surrounding these issues. This is a major problem, because stigma is a considerable barrier to preventing further violence, and supporting victims and survivors. It also presents many challenges to addressing these issues. Let’s change this. Its time to end the stigma surrounding domestic violence. Here are some ways that you can help: Supporting a friend and listening to them without judging them Education and community awareness of domestic abuse can reduce the perceptions of the stigma Providing non-stigmatising assistance Encouraging reporting through support services and empowerment #abuse #mentalhealth #NDIS

11.01.2022 Firstly, what is it? Schizophrenia is a mental illness that impacts the way a person thinks, feels and behaves. It often makes it difficult for those diagnosed to distinguish between what is real and what is not. There are many myths about schizophrenia including that it always makes people violent or always unable to hold a job. And perhaps among the more common myths are that they must be ‘possessed’ or have ‘split personalities’. All these myths are untrue. Individuals wit...h schizophrenia struggle with symptoms that may make them appear this way, however this is not the case. Individuals with schizophrenia struggle with unwanted hallucinations (experiences through the senses that are not perceived by others e.g. they may see or hear things that others cannot) and delusions (beliefs in concepts that others of the same background and religion do not believe). Treatment is available to support individuals in reducing their symptoms and helping them live the lives they want to live. If you are worried about yourself or someone you know, consider going and speaking to a Psychiatrist or Psychologist. A GP can help facilitate this with a referral to see a specialist. The earlier schizophrenia is diagnosed, the better a chance for recovery. #mindwise #ndisprovider #schizophreniamyths

08.01.2022 Support from friends, family and health professionals, plays a significant role in the recovery process of someone experiencing a mental health issue. Learning ways to do this is conducive to providing the best support possible. 1. Recognise something is not right Not everyone experiences and copes with emotions the same way. Understanding that each person experiences different symptoms can help.... 2. Educate yourself Research the symptoms from credible sources and understand their perspective. This will help to not judge or criticise or undermine their feelings. 3. Have the conversation if they are willing A conversation can make a difference in helping someone feel less alone and more supported. Don't underestimate the importance of just 'being there'. But, never force someone to open up to you if they are not ready. 4. Support them to see a health professional Encourage them to see a professional. Offer to help them review potential counsellors or therapists. 5. Take care of yourself Spending a lot of time with a loved one who is going through something can take an emotional toll. Know your limits around difficult emotions, and make sure you take time to recharge. *Disclaimer: Please refrain from misdiagnosing yourself or someone. These are just a few steps you can take towards educating yourself. Always seek the advice of a mental health professional or other qualified health provider with any questions you may have regarding your or anyone else’s condition. #mentalhealth #ndis #support
