In keeping in line with the recommendations of the health authorities, please consider our takeaway options (Deliveroo, UberEATS, Menulog). 22.01.2022 PART 1: A NEW BEGINNING This story starts in 1992 when our family, (then a family of 3) immigrated to Perth, Western Australia from Guangzhou, China. Leaving China was no easy task, but after a whole lot of persistence and luck, my father Ming successfully migrated to Australia as an electrician at the time. Thinking back, it must have been a nerve-racking experience as they had very little money, had a 3-year-old son, didnt have any friends or family here, and they did no...t know the language. Today, in the social media and internet age, we forget (and the younger ones dont even know) how hard it was to stay in touch with family who live overseas. International calls were charged by the minute and were very expensive, especially to our family who were earning very little. International calls usually only happened about once a month and lasted about 5 minutes. Like many Chinese immigrants of the 90s, they soon fell into the life of working in restaurants due largely to the language barrier, even though they were learning English. On Mings first day working in a restaurant he made his way out to Midland from Victoria Park. Having no car, public transport was the way to go. Unfortunately, work finished very late that night and he was offered to be dropped back off in the city. It was only after being dropped off at 1 am that he realised that public transport doesnt run at that time so he had to walk home from the city to Victoria Park. He was so shattered the next morning he quit his job without collecting payment for the one days work . A bumpy start to a new life. Soon they settled into life here and both mum and dad worked jobs in restaurants while studying English. It was a difficult few years but it was the start of everything we now know, and it was all for a better life for our family. P. S. If you go in store you will most probably see one or both of these lovely people but they dont quite look this young anymore . P.P.S Check out Mings hair. Im sure it was fashionable in 92...probably Part 2 to come soon

19.01.2022 PART 2: THE EARLY DAYS Having worked in a few different Chinese restaurants, Ming started out washing dishes and over time learned the skills that would ultimately lead to the barbecue and roast meats that are on offer today. The origin story of Mings BBQ House is not a simple one. Out of necessity to provide for his family (by this time a family of 5 ) and his brothers family, who had just moved to Australia, he decided they would open up a restaurant to earn a very mod...est living to support the 2 families. With a loan of $30,000 they set about to open their very first restaurant. Due to the fact that they were on an extremely tight budget, they had to be very resourceful. In that very first restaurant Ming and his brother actually did a lot of the renovations themselves including the cabinetry, painting of the walls and the tiling throughout the restaurant. In 1998 they opened up Golden King BBQ Express in the Morley Markets shopping centre. Anyone who grew up in Perth in the 90s should feel a little bit of nostalgia with these photos. Stay tuned for Part 3 .

Knowing that this may very well be the last opportunity to connect with you all I would like to use this opportunity to share the story of our family business. Over the next few posts we will share the journey that our father, Ming, took from the early days of starting a restaurant. 14.12.2021 PART 3: THE GOLDEN ERA Sorry it took us a little longer to give you part 3 of this story. Things have kept us very busy indeed . The year was 1998 and Ming had just opened up his first restaurant business with his brother. Golden King BBQ Express located in the Morley Markets was where it all began and it was certainly the most humble of beginnings.... In today's world of social media and fast flowing information, we have been accustomed to quick business growth with the help of social media hype. In 1998 when Golden King opened there was no such thing. The early days were tough with a revenue of only $300 on the first day of business and $100 on the second day. Hardly a stress free opening! Regardless he had to persevere and worked every single day, 7 days of the week for the next year before even thinking about taking a day off. Yes, you read that correctly! We were also astounded when he retold this story to us . Every single day Ming would go into work at 8am to start preparing for a 10am opening. The work day would only end at 9pm each night. This level of work ethic is not something that many of us have had to experience truthfully. Although times weren't easy, the coming years at Golden King were also some of the best years. Many customers became family friends and some employees became very close friends and business partners in Golden King. In looking back, Ming is very fond of these times. Stay tuned for the next part of the story! Part 4 coming soon.
