16.01.2022 High Country Belted Galloways is sad to have lost a beautiful heifer to a snake bite. Clanwoolfe Lulu was bit roughly Thursday morning. I had noted her walking slower then normal as the first sign at 10:45am. I locked her up in the yards and 5 hours later she was weak and trembling on one leg with every few steps she was buckling over on her fetlock. Then at 10 pm she couldn't rise. I had called Vet several times with us all assuming she was hurt from a pregnant cow riding ...her and that she had hurt her back (which happens). I did however note according to her vulva skin colour was very pale where normally when in estrus it is a deep pink. No one thought of snake bite at the time, including me as still cold and wet. I booked Vet at 10 pm on emergency phone to come first thing following morning. Next morning 8 am Lulu had blood coming out of rectum and straight away snake bite came to my mind. I called vet who was only minutes away from our driveway entrance, and although they thought to early for snakes coming out (still in hibernation) blood tests were positive. By the time blood test results in she was dead 12 noon. She lasted just over 24 hours. Every year that we have lived in country Victoria I have seen snakes in September and have had several close calls, as snakes are lethargic when coming out of hibernation. Lulu was a playful curious heifer and maybe she was sniffing it or perhaps she stepped on it but what ever the case, snake season is here :-( See more

03.01.2022 Snake Bite update. In having further discussions with several cattle Vets including a very experienced senior cattle vet and for purpose of sharing information apparently, snake bites are not that common in cattle! When cows bit the symptoms are variable. Variations have to do whether it was a bite into muscle or into bone (weaker) and if a full bite or a partial bite. In spring the snakes are most venomous as they have stored up venom all winter. Snakes are slow when they co...me out of hibernation so cannot move as fast to get out of the way of livestock (or humans!). Symptoms vary depending on whether a Tiger or a Brown snake bite. Cattle do not present the same as cats and dogs and being able to see pupil dilation in cattle not reliable as they do not dilate to same extent - or at all. Cows can't vomit and apparently will only foam at mouth if bit on head. Heart race increases within 20 minutes and temperature drops but not until muscle break down and beginnings of organ failure which is later. A 'bulling injury' was still original assumption as lameness and nerve damage from a bulling injury (damage to back or pelvis from being mounted by bull or cow) more common to happen then snake bite. Snake bites are not well studied as rarely Vets get to see a live animal as most die in the paddock before being diagnosed. All helpful information although depressing. Anti-venom needs to be given ASAP, as not as effective once organ failure commences. Anti-venom 'mops up' venom in blood stream only but does not clear out venom already attached to cells/ or damaged cells. Venom viles are about $800 each and are the same as a vile for humans or a vile for dogs. A cow being heavier would likely need more then one vile. How many viles used vary dependent on concentration and volume of venom injected. All good information to have so informed decisions may be made but unfortunately risky business and still pretty grey and no gaurentees still of saving heifer. At the end of the day snakes are scary and not just to cattle and the season is only just beginning! See more
