22.01.2022 Listening to our newly arrived Audeze LCD-1 demo and were pretty happy campers. A lightweight planar, with a good design for portable monitoring (as long as zero isolation is okay). The sound is leaner than a typical Audeze, leaning towards bright overall, but it doesnt quite seem as shouty as say the LCD-X. It definitely doesnt have the depth of bass impact compared to its larger cousins but what is there is fast and punchy. 15.01.2022 Preannounced before the Bristol Hi-Fi Show are two spiffy new modules from Chord Electronics ! First is the Chord 2GO streaming module for the Hugo 2. Like the Poly to the Mojo, the 2GO allows the Hugo2 to stream music from sources like file servers, Airplay, or Roon, as well as the in-built MicroSD card slot. Also new is the 2yu module that connects to the 2go to provide digital outputs, turning the 2go+2yu into a streamer that has USB, digital coaxial outputs and even BNC outputs to connect to the M-Scaler. 15.01.2022 So we have the DITA Dream XLS in store now, and I gotta say, wow. We havent done extensive listening but even a brief demo gives you such an impression of clarity and balance. Fans of the typical Japanese upper-midrange will be well served here, but to our ears everything is still tasteful and smooth. As a single dynamic its a lighter sound than the T9IE, but we still think it may serve as a great all rounder for those after a brighter sound. Initial impressions: sound is very similar, but with a few subtle changes: namely slightly smoother highs and bass seems better controlled as well. 13.01.2022 After sushi machines, Audio-Technica Australias next side hustle must be beer! The beer in question is a collab between AT and Yullis Brews (you might know them from their awesome vegan restaurant Yullis Surry Hills). Now of course, the beer is not available for demo at Minidisc, but ATs new closed back woodies, the ATH-AWAS and ATH-AWKT headphones are! Here are our quick first impressions: The ATH-AWAS is crafted out of beautiful Asada Zakura (Japanese Cherry) wood and ...is the more mellow of the two. More of an all rounder, the AWAS is voiced as if it were a closed back ADX5000, or if you took the WP900, flattened out the bass and smoothed out the highs just a tad. Warm and smooth, but still with Audio Technicas lifted upper-midrange. I really like it! Now if you were ever wondering if AT would make a non-limited version of the ATH-L5000 with the new headband style, we think the flagship ATH-AWKT is the closest thing to it. The lovely earcups are made of Japanese Kokutan (striped ebony) hardwood. The sound, like the L5000, leans way into Audio Technicas traditional house sound with a very distinct emphasis on the upper midrange. It is a brighter, more detailed sound than the AWKT. I think it sounds breathtaking with strings and female vocalists - but it is far more of a specialty headphone. It can make male vocals sound a bit thin. One really nice thing about both of these headphones is that the timbre and imaging is absolutely spot on for a closed back headphone. Maybe its the wood cups - to us acoustic instruments sound natural and "right" on this even, moreso than some other closed backs like the Focal Stellia or Sony MDR-Z1R. However, neither of these headphones produce the same kind of thick sub/mid bass response as the Focal or Sony, so if you want that kind of sound but a similar timbre wed say look at the WP900. Well have more to say in the future! 12.01.2022 New in for demo is the spicy Audio-Technica Australia ATH-IEX1 in ear flagship This one is probably going to be for hardcore fans of Audio Technicas traditional vocal delivery. There are some very forward mid/high frequencies here that put an extreme emphasis on the upper vocal range, similar to the limited L5000. Bass is substantial, similar to the WP900 in sheer impact and quantity. It doesnt sound harsh, but its not for the faint of heart.
