13.01.2022 There are several plants in Australia that are toxic to horses. The plant pictured is: Cape Weed. ... It has a long taproot and it can germinate rapidly. Although it is not thought of as a highly toxic weed, it can if consumed in quantity, at the early growth stages, be full of NSC’s. (Non structural carbohydrates). It is possible that it can bring in a laminitic incident in horses and ponies that are susceptible to EMS ( equine metabolic syndrome) or Insulin resistant horses. It often attacks the hepatic (liver) cells. Other plants include: Flatweed which to the untrained eye can resemble Dandelion on a short stalk. This plants leaves lay flat on the ground (hence the name). When ingested by horses, Flatweed attacks the myelin sheath which covers the nerves, particularly the sciatic nerve in the hind quarters which then give the horse a spasticity of movement, which may develop into Pasture Associated Stringhalt! Patterson’s Curse: or sometimes known as (Salvation Jane) the young and tender leaves are very palatable to horses I’d there is a shortage of pasture/hard feed. Fireweed: is a neurotoxin to horses targeting the nerves in the large muscles. It’s not particularly appealing to horses as it does retain quite a specific odour. Mostly grazed by horses with little to no feed. Long term consumption will lead to serious and debilitating liver damage. Fireweed is extremely invasive, it can be spread quickly over a long distance by wind. A single plant can produce up to 18,000 seeds in it’s life cycle. If you aren’t sure what species of poisonous plants are on your property, you can seek more information from The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. There is also an excellent downloadable PDF from RIRDC Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation, titled Plants Poisonous to Horses an Australian Feed Guide. https://www.horsecouncil.org.au/plants-poisonous-to-horses- See more

11.01.2022 SPRING Pasture Alert START NOW and Maintain FEEDCHAR, for All seasons, All years Do you know YOU CAN maintain Feedchar all year? And ADD Feedchar with all fee...ds and other organic supplements? Yes, YOU CAN ! WHY ? As part of their normal growth stages, from heat or cold stress, or for self-protection, plants can be mildly to strongly toxic, ALL YEAR - they don't stop ... Animals must eat them continuously, and so can be continuously dealing with plant-toxin issues: Worldwide studies show that mycotoxins commonly appear in a common range of feeds, all year round. They are natural phenomena that have multiple negative affects on animals, such as agitation, anxiety, digestive upset, poor feet, skin and coat condition, reproductive problems and impaired immunity. And it is not just mycotoxins that animals have to deal with in spring forage, but also high glucose/carbohydrates and high nitrates/nitrites, the latter especially after drought-breaking rains, well documented by Ag Depts. For this reason, it is important to KEEP going with Feedchar supplementation, particularly for diet-sensitive and immune-compromised animals, who may benefit from the continuous digestive support that Feedchar may provide. After MANY years of use, many clients show that small maintenance doses of Feedchar CAN be continued long term! AND be safely combined with vitamins, more minerals, and any other organic supplements, if desired - it may even complement them. Feedchar comprises charcoal PLUS tiny amounts of minerals - beneficial trace elements such as magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium and silicon, etc. - which coat over the stable charcoal in very SMALL amounts. These organic ingredients may stimulate electrical activity in the gut and do NOT negatively impact on any nutrition from any feeds, any vitamins, minerals, probiotics or prebiotics, etc., that carers may wish to add ... We do not see nutrition-deprived, unhealthy animals from long-term Feedchar use - the OPPOSITE! Continuous healthy feet and coats, feed efficiency, and calm behaviour, through all seasons! Our posts and photos show some of many personal experiences of plant-toxin effects and positive outcomes with Feedchar. Thank you for SHARING these stories, as they may assist other carers of more beautiful animals! Why wait for diet-related problems to occur? Be confident to use FEEDCHAR and to KEEP using it to support your animals' health and immunity! Purchase your economical pouch of FEEDCHAR from local stockists, or post direct, via www.agspand.com.au.

10.01.2022 8 weeks ago I was contemplating as to whether I PTS my beautiful girl Avonleigh Maddi, as she was going downhill fast, she was pretty much crippled with laminit...is, and had dropped so much weight that I just didn't know what else to try in the end.. she looked terrible and it was heartbreaking watching her in so much pain.. I'm happy to say exactly 8 weeks later she is in the best condition of her life and happy and running everywhere thanks to the amazing product Feedchar, it's a charcoal supplement for animals.. I am absolutely gobsmaked at how brilliant it has worked for her.. she also did not foal last season but I am very pleased to say she has preg tested in foal to Shannon.. Maddi is the amazing dam of Jackpot, Queen Bee, Inspector, Michelangelo and Maverick, all these ponies have proven themselves to be incredible show ponies over the last few years.. anyone that has a chronic foundering pony I can not more highly recommend you give this a go, I have also popped another of my mares in it and she is thriving as well.. 09.01.2022 Hendra Virus is a deadly disease. It is spread by the bodily fluids excreted by fruit bats. Once, the virus is transmitted to the horse through different medium...s, like feed, faeces, contaminated water, or urine, it eventually keeps spreading to other horses and humans. It is a extremely fatal disease. The chances of survival are usually none for the horse. Hendra Virus vaccination is perhaps, the only way to develop immunity against it, and at Exclusively Equine, we request all Horse owners to get this vaccination done. This will help protect your horse and family against the disease. Go to http://ed.gr/co4xv for more information. See more

08.01.2022 SUGAR BEET FOR HORSES Sugar beet is a great feed for horses and very much underused in this country (because it tends to be fed in very small amounts). If molas...sed it can be useful for boosting feed intake in fussy horses, but its a great shame if this is the only reason it is fed. Sugar beet is unusual in that it is rich in highly digestible fibre (sometimes called 'superfibre'), and it is a medium energy horse feed (equivalent to the lower energy grains such as oats, or competition compound feeds). It has a good macro-mineral content for horses so won't unbalance the diet like grains, bran, copra and linseed do. It is high in calcium so is an ideal compliment to all of these. It is not balanced in microminerals or vitamins, however, so these do need to be added. Unmolassed sugar beet is completely non-heating, low in sugar and very low in starch. To get the benefits (e.g. to replace compound feed or grain for a working horse or for weight gain) it needs to be fed on a fresh weight basis i.e. you need to consider how much you feed before soaking. Many people underfeed it because they scoop it out once it is soaked, therefore the actual amount they feed is tiny - sometimes less than 100g. You can feed 1-2 kg fresh weight (before soaking) to a 500kg horse per day (over 2-3 feeds) throughout the winter. Sugar beet is a great way to provide horses with extra calories but with a high fibre, low starch diet. Linseed or rapeseed oil can be added to it for even more energy. You can also feed it along with compound feed without unbalancing the overall diet. Sugar beet is also ideal to feed to travelling horses to help keep them hydrated, especially if you mix it with dried grass and salt... with plenty of water. It is highly palatable for most horses and a great way to get extra water in. Brands of unmolassed sugar beet available in the UK include Speedibeet, Kwikbeet, 10 Minute Beet, PuraBeet (all micronised, flakes that only require a 10-15 minute soak) and Equibeet (24 hour-soak pellets). Molassed sugar beet is usually available in 24-hour soak pellets or 12-hour soak shreds. Sugar beet is also found in a number of compound feeds, both ground and incorporated in pellets, and used in mixes as shreds. It is also found in many of the compound mashes available nowadays. 05.01.2022 FLATWEEDS Winter Spring & FEEDCHAR Three common flatweeds - Dandelion, False Dandelion, and Capeweed (see picture) - contain energy, vitamins and minerals (e....g. Vit. A/ beta-carotene). However, some potential negatives are: * Ag Departments warn some flatweeds are HIGH NITRATE accumulators during autumn, winter and spring (see previous post on nitrates) * Their EXCESS prevalence in paddocks restricts other plants, potentially creating dietary imbalances. A DIVERSE DIET that includes FIBRE as well as MOVEMENT may reduce potential plant toxin effects. Some ideas to assist are: * Do not let hungry animals gorge on nitrate-rich, flatweed-dominant areas * For horses, DIVERSIFY diets in frequent, SMALL hard feeds that include Agspand's Feedchar, mineral-charcoal digestive aid and toxin binder * Maintain continuous access to HAY fibre-roughage using slow-feeder nets - this buffers the rich, green pick; remember nitrate levels at harvest remain in the hay, so consider less-protein-rich hays as buffers to green picks * Set up perimeter track-fencing systems with distances between feed, hay, water and shelter points, to encourage animal MOVEMENT * Because excess flatweeds proliferate on disturbed, overgrazed areas, ROTATE animals on separate paddock areas to the perimeter track, to stimulate diverse and competitive plants to the flatweeds in those areas. Ask your Rural Stockist for HELP with electric fencing options, hay feeders and Feedchar through all seasons, to support your animals' long-term digestive health and immunity! 05.01.2022 FOR SALE - Revere Matisse aka Henri. Selling my little man, due to absolutely no fault of his own. He is wasting away in the paddock and he deserves more than... just the paddock ornament life. 36" Gelding, 4yo. He is a sensitive little chap, but has no dirt and is easy to do anything with. He is a good all round performance horse, doing well in his halter, performance and liberty classes. He is very important to me, so his new home is too. Very hard decision, and one that has taken me a few months to somewhat come to terms with. Asking $1300.00. Located Maryborough QLD
03.01.2022 I know it's hard to look at but it's important. I see more and more people these days leaving their halters on their horses... I have seen this end result and i...t is not pretty. Even when you think your pastures are safe, there's always SOMETHING for them to hang up on. I have seen horses hang themselves on a single nail. I have seen horses hang themselves and break their necks on a post. I have seen horses break their own necks scratching their face with a hind foot. Leaving halters on horses is never a good decision! They are born with a self- destruct gene and your only purpose in owning a horse is to keep them alive against their wishes. Please be safe out there for the sake of the horses. See more

02.01.2022 Q; Why is my horse eating so much loose lick this time of year? A; It's spring time! Your horse is coat changing (they need more minerals to grow a healthy c...oat) & the grass is rapidly growing and has a high 'moisture' content therefore may be lacking in vitamins and minerals. Yes, horses know they need more this time of year (they are smarter than you think!) Spring time Loose Lick tip; Top up your ad-lib bucket regually so your horses have access 24/7. Carry a small bucket with you when you check on your horse & put out as needed. Love seeing your happy healthy horses simply 'Glowing' on BLL or BAM+ See more
