25.01.2022 Keeping young people safe online is not all about technology, it is about common sense and communication amongst young people and their parents, guardians or carers. Please make sure you talk to your children about their use of technology.

22.01.2022 G'day all, Some of our Yr 3's have been working on a gardening project with staff member Michelle K. The children have done a great job and are learning how to tend a vege garden and grow food to eat. Thanks to both Ms Koch for her work with this and Bunnings Morayfield for their kind donation that enabled us to make this happen. Sean

15.01.2022 G'day all, As a "Parenting Ideas" school we often receive interesting articles to share. As a parent of 2 children, I found the insight from Michael Grose (he appears on "The Project") very interesting. Sean This has been a tough parenting year. On a personal level it’s been challenging, but when you add the extra difficulty of helping children and young people navigate this year, you’d be forgiven for feeling like you’ve had enough.... It’s timely to look at US-based academic Dr. Brene’ Brown’s research that informed her book The Gift of Imperfect Parenting. Brown’s core finding was that the best parenting strategies rely on modelling for them to be adopted by children. That’s a little scary as it means we need to be the adults that we want to our kids to become. There is great power in kids watching us practise how we manage hardships, frustrations and difficulties. Whether we use self-kindness or self-put downs, either will leave an impression on our kids. Not only do they see how we react when we stumble or make mistakes, but we give them permission to act in the same ways. It’s hard to be self-kind If you’re a goal-oriented type of person, highly-judgemental or someone who likes to get things done, then self-kindness can be difficult to befriend. It goes against the grain to laugh at your mistakes or miss a deadline, even though it won’t be the end of the world as you know it. If you recognise this type of rigid approach then it may be time let go of some old ways. Inflexibility is the enemy of healthy wellbeing, which thrives on adaptability and self-forgiveness. Let them hear the process Giving a child or young person insight into your thinking is a powerful parenting strategy. Sharing your struggles and mess ups with kids in age-appropriate ways takes vulnerability and promotes empathy. It takes courage to share a comment such as, I keep putting myself down, which is not helpful. I’ve got to talk to myself as if I’m talking to someone I love. Disclosing this type of self-talk is only useful if it’s done in a safe, matter of fact way and a child is comfortable with the message. Self-kindness means acting compassionately toward yourself when you are struggling to meet your own expectations, meeting with unexpected difficulties and/or met with failure. It’s time to drop the stiff upper lip, put aside the strict schedule and stop berating yourself. Instead say to yourself, This is really tough right now. How can I take some comfort and look after myself? This is a message worth modelling particularly, if you are living with a perfectionist or a child with tendencies toward anxiety. Michael Grose

11.01.2022 On Wednesday, our robotics students got to shine at the 2020 First LEGO League competition. This year's competition was a little different to usual, with the judges from QUT coming to Minimbah to watch our teams perform. First LEGO League has a different real-world theme every year. This year it was "RePLAY", which is all about encouraging people to be more active. Our upper-school teams explored some simple ideas to keep busy parents' kids active, as well as a more serio...us look at how mental health can come about from inactivity. The performances went well, and the judges really enjoyed what they’d come up with. The junior teams had a similar challenge called "Play Makers". The teams have spent many, many lunch breaks building and coding their LEGO models. They spoke confidently about their creations, and demonstrated how their programs made them move. The Year 2 team Minimbah Movers won the Team Model award and the Year 3 team Super Fitness Girls won the Coding award. In the afternoon, the upper-school teams finally got to show off their robots. These things rarely work exactly as planned, so both teams spent every spare moment tweaking their code to get things perfect. They solved many missions on the game table, one team scoring 185 points, and the other scoring 150 points. Students, judges and coaches all had an exhausting but fun day. Our students made us proud with their persistence, energy, and amazing behaviour. Now we just need to wait until Saturday's online closing ceremony to find out how we've done against the other 19 schools in our area who have also been competing this week. The closing ceremony can be viewed via the link below, at 10:30am on Saturday. https://qut.zoom.us/webi/register/WN_fgeLnV8NTpSwTERE7EN9rw Thank you, Mr Elms, Mrs Court, Mrs Reinke and Mrs Peat
