14.01.2022 In October 2018 the Explosives Inspectorate held the annual Queensland Explosives Forum (QEF) which focused on explosives safety and security. The forum was attended by members of industry, inter and intra-state regulators, stakeholders and international bodies. Dr Andrew Kettle presented on the progress of the Alternative Explosives Research Project. He reported on Underground mine testing, post-blast fume analysis, and alternative fuel components to a novel hydrogen peroxi...de-based explosive being developed and trialled by Mining3. The talk reinforced the improvement that alternative explosives can contribute to the elimination of toxic nitrogen oxide fumes in mining explosives. Uniquely at this forum, following the conference presentations in Brisbane, delegates travelled to the Queensland Explosives Reserve, Helidon, for a field day. Dr Kettle was able to demonstrate the manufacture and detonation performance of the hydrogen peroxide-based explosive. Attendees enthusiastically engaged in both the presentation and detonation display of a 500 g sample. The Queensland Explosives Forum was organised by an industry representative steering committee in collaboration with the Queensland Explosives Inspectorate. Dr Kettle represented both Mining3 and the explosives research community on the steering committee.
