24.01.2022 For Shane and Paul! These two shades were both renovations of existing shades. We stripped them down, cleaned up the rings and remade them using new fabrics. The top shade featuring the bird is actually oval and the bottom shade features a gold fabric cuff top and bottom. These shades sit on lamps that are at opposite ends of a large living/dining space and work well together and with the existing artwork in Shane and Paul’s home. - - #handmade #madebyhand... #ministryofhandmade #lampshades #customlampshades #newagain #lampshaderenovation #lampshadeworkshop #makealampshade #creativeworkshops See more

24.01.2022 These crazy girls were the high point of my week! A great group of friends, they produced the brightest and boldest set of shades that has ever come out of one lampshade workshop at Ministry of Handmade. All these fabrics are from our stock, but you can bring your own if you wish. We all had a ball!! 22.01.2022 So, the filming is finished .... as they say, it’s a wrap! We have been west of Cairns in Quinkan Country filming a promotion for Tourism Events Queensland. Our destination was Jarramali, the site of rock art that is highly regarded internationally. In fact this site is recognised in the top ten rock art sites in the world! Our host and tour guide was Johnny @jarramali_rock_art_tours whose people have been contacted to this land for generations. It was a privilege to hear Joh...nny share his knowledge about the art which dates back thousands of years and to witness his passion for his ancestral home. We’ve certainly never done anything like this before and in a short space of time we’ve had so many new experiences and learnt so much. Watching the camera and sound crew at work was amazing! All that equipment!!! Plus the drone!! And the still photographer and the production team! Special thanks to Hailey @haileybe for being our connection to this fabulous project and for directing the shoot!!! We have no idea when the finished product will be ready.... hanging out to see it!!! - - #handmade #ministryofhandmade #madebyhand #video #cairns #queensland #jarramali #jarramalirockart #jarramalirockarttours #indigenousart #rockart #queenslandtourism #tourism #outback

21.01.2022 Smiles all round! We’ve had a lovely afternoon helping Trish and Julia make their own bench seats. We supply the frames for this workshop (steel reinforced plywood base, foam and wadding) and the participants bring their own fabric or purchase fabric here. Trish’s fabric was an Indian wood block printed linen and Julia purchased her fabric here. We have a choice of legs but both opted for Victorian Ash hardwood legs. This is one of our regular workshops and we will run it aga...in before Christmas. New workshop listings are advised via our newsletter. You can sign up on the bottom of the home page of our website. 21.01.2022 @mr.ministryofhandmade is a man of many talents!! Among his many skills is the ability to create templates for tapered lampshades of all shapes and sizes. And this is truly how it is done... on the floor with a large piece of paper, a very long stick, a big nail and a pencil. I think people think I am joking when I tell them how it is done, but here is the evidence. 21.01.2022 Its not quite the great wall of China! So here is the progress on @mr.ministryofhandmade gabion wall. Maurice purchased enough supplies to make six panels and now they are done ! This has taken since January. In this location, it wasnt just a matter of wiring the frames together and filling them with sandstone. An existing rotting sleeper wall had to be pulled down and the posts removed. Next there was more of the bank to be dug out by hand and the waste soil and Brisbane ...Schist (hard and stubborn rock) to be removed to another spot. There are heaps more gabions to go yet, but at this point it is time to stop and admire the completion of stage 1. We are going to plant out the strip of soil behind the wall with some hardy flowering low shrubs, probably Grevillias. Building this has been a labour intensive process, but its a great mindfulness activity in a year full of trying times and unpleasant truths!!! - - #landscaping #gabion #gabionwall #sandstone #madebyhand #handmade #ministryofhandmade See more

16.01.2022 Another personal project done !!! This chair has a great story. It was gifted to me by @lilibetstanley after a big clean out. The chair had a highly glossy varnish finish that really needed to go but structurally it was great. My 90 year dad (a highly proficient and experienced timber craftsman) stripped it back to the original timber so that the wonderful Queensland Maple could be waxed. I covered the seat pad and back cushion and reinstated the seat support so that it lo...oked like new. And yesterday it was delivered to its new owner, my daughter-in-law Mary. I promised it to her for her 30th birthday back in April as a feeding chair for her new babe. Our grandson Hayes is now 8 days old and Mary has her chair! She requested the neutral coloured fabric with interesting texture that will look fabulous in their nursery. Mary and Dave just love old items with history and I just love it that there are four generations of our family linked via this chair. 15.01.2022 Sometimes life throws one or two curve balls (or a whole heap) and you have to go with the flow!! My two separate falls (one arm injured each time) have really stretched our resilience. So , if it feels like we have been missing in action, we have!! My potentially fractured wrist (waiting on the results of a CT scan) is a real inconvenience at a very trying time. As a family, we are preparing ourselves for the imminent passing of Maurice’s dear dad, Bernie, from cancer. And w...e keep putting one foot in front of the other, counting our blessings, connecting with close friends and family who understand us, focussing on what we can control, relishing the simple sweet things of life, growing our veges, planting flowers, sharing our passions. Accompanying all this is the realisation that some questions have no answers and in fact, more questions are sometimes the only answer. I am looking forward to the self I will become on the other side of this strange year we are calling 2020. As a footnote... things are still trucking along at Ministry of Handmade... we are blessed to have a great team!!!! - - #ministryofhandmade #newbeginnings #family #takeabreath See more

14.01.2022 He struck gold!! After a neglecting the vege patch for a while, @mr.ministryofhandmade was back in it again today! The motivation was a birthday gift of seedlings, sugar cane mulch and mushroom compost from the offspring! These sweet potatoes have been quietly growing in the soil for months now. These werent planted as seeds or seedlings but as little shoots from sweet potatoes that we trimmed off before cooking. They have thrived on neglect (bless them) and are now ready fo...r sharing and eating!!! 13.01.2022 This first pic is three years old ... this spotty top spot was made from offcuts of cotton drill. It was created on a whim when I started experimenting with simple tops so that I could more easily teach sewing. And that simple top had become the basis of ModularME, our unique pattern and sewing system. Yesterday I had the chance for the first time to publicly display a range of garments I have made over the last nine months using our very simple @modularme pattern. I was at @...backontherackbrisbane clothing market. Everyone was amazed at the range and variety of garments that can be made using our one simple pattern and our add-on modules. This project of ours is still in its infancy but we have big plans for it. Our goal to to teach people how to confidently sew their own clothes that actually fit... fit their body, fit their lifestyle and fit their personality! I loved the opportunity yesterday to chat with people about their sewing journey (whatever it has been like) and how, if they want to, they can stitch their own clothes. There is no need to be a slave to fashion, or to have to wear clothes that dont make you feel like you! The fabric is one of my favourites, Jaipur Ruby by @warwickfabrics This piece is a great size (nearly 800mm in diameter) and can do double duty as a coffee table. 08.01.2022 Studio dogs! Last week when we were away, our Reggie, aka Sir Reginald (at right) had a sleepover with his pal, Rufus! Rufus is the studio dog of our son, James, and his partner, Aaron. @nordacious @aboynamedaaron They are both gorgeous dogs but put them together and they turn into what I call naughty boy cousins who like to dig up grandma’s garden! All while looking like butter wouldn’t melt in their mouths! Gotta love them! 08.01.2022 A collective name for a group of baby coat hangers? I have been busy knitting these over the last few months. Grand baby #2 is due on September 22! Our son and daughter-in-law, Dave and Mary, are expecting their first bub!!!! Someone had gifted me the timber coat hangers years ago and recently a friend gifted me lots of unused tapestry wool. 06.01.2022 MAKE A SIMPLE HAT!! Learn the basics of millinery and call yourself a milliner .... doesn’t that sound a bit fancy?!?!? A milliner is a women’s hat maker.** We have a fun sewing workshop this Saturday with Lauren Weier. You’ll create your own fabric hat and at the same time learn the very basic skills required to more simple fabric hats!! Add some style to your wardrobe by creating hats that coordinate with your clothes! All the details are on our website and there is a link ...in our profile. And don’t worry if you don’t have time to grab any fabric or thread.... we have some great choices here!!!!! The pattern Lauren will be using is from Australian designer Elbe Textiles. ** Now the origins of word milliner: MILLINER Originates from Milan, Italy from the importation of women's finery from Italy in the 16th century. 02.01.2022 Making matters! As a teacher of handmade skills, I ponder all the time on the true value of making. I could write a book on the value of handmade (and who knows maybe one day I will!) and you could ask hundreds of makers what making means to them and get just as many different answers. To me handmade skills are life skills that give us independence and agency and freedom and choices. But today I am pondering about the connection between hand making and love.... Just over 10 years ago our beautiful daughter Lauren married her beau, Josh. Collectively between the two families and some close friends we created an exceptional event with hand making at its core. We had so much fun planning it, and watching it come to life on the day was a dream come true! We purchased Lauren’s simple ballerina style dupion silk dress off the rack and it fitted her like a glove. (We had opted not to make the dress as there was so much other making to be done.) I then set about sewing a fitted lace jacket using vintage lace gifted by my aunt. The back opening was a long row of covered buttons and the neckline was encrusted with hundreds of hand stitched pearl beads of varying sizes. Every stitch that went into that jacket was an act of love. And that is the thing about making something for someone ... it is an act of love, an exchange ....stitch by stitch, minute by minute you are giving of yourself, trading a small part of your life to create something that will connect the maker and the recipient. Making can be a deep mystic process that stirs the heart, lifts the spirit and challenges your head and hands. The final touch on the jacket was a small tag that read JL 27/5/11. And stitched into Josh’s waistcoat was a matching tag that read LJ 27/5/11. Making does matter, it matters so much. That is why I get up each day with a spring in my step and look forward to sharing with others how using your hands creatively can change your life. PS... I also made the four dupion silk bridesmaids’ dresses in four different autumn tones as well as my outfit. We also handmade the tablecloths, 102 table napkins, light fittings, place cards, etc, etc. - - #handmade #ministryofhandmade

24.12.2021 Every single day, I get more and more excited about #modularme our modularised sewing system. We’ve revisited the base pattern and refined it a bit (sizing and fit hadn’t changed from the existing pattern). It’s all about improving the user experience. And we have now finished quite a few new modules and twists so that our pattern is super versatile and can be adapted in multiple ways. With over 50 years of sewing experience, I have so many ideas. It’s a matter of identifying... which skills we want to teach and in what order. Then documenting everything in a fun and easy to understand manner. @mr.ministryofhandmade has excellent computer skills which has been super handy and our combined marketing and graphic design experience is allowing us to create a program that is different and engaging!! I can’t wait to share everything with you all!! Meanwhile we’ll keep beavering away! If you are new to ModularME, you can read all about it on our website. 16.11.2021 New colour ways in our Slow Stitched Cushion Kits! I’ve really enjoyed curating the fabrics for these new kits that we’ll be launching soon. They’re called Heirloom, Bloom and Hawaii. The fabrics included are a combo of luxury linens and cottons with a few vintage pieces thrown in. Which is your fave? I think mine is Heirloom, the first one, which features raw silk and vintage English gold velvet!!! Mind you, the Anna Spiro Oahu in the third one is pretty special too! 06.11.2021 ModularMINI! Swipe to see me wearing a @modularme top version! This is a dress I have just completed for my granddaughter. If you look closely you can see that it is a shrunk down version of some of the #modularme adult garments that I have been posting recently. The concept of taking a base garment and modifying it to change the styling works for kids’ clothing as well as for grown-ups! This has sneaky inseam pockets which Aubrey will love ! I used a lightweight striped ...cotton for the pockets as well as the facings. This fabric is a cotton sateen called Italian Resort and it is from our online store. This dress was made from offcuts. 24.10.2021 Fluted lampshades!!!! We’ve been asked several times over the last six months if we can make these. Today we did some serious prototyping with proportions, materials and techniques. This is the end result and we are very pleased with it! We fiddled around for hours trying different ratios and a couple of joining techniques, reworking the dimensions as we went. This sample has a top ring of 13cm and a bottom ring of 23cm. Of course, the scale can be changed to create any size ...you like. This technique is best suited to lightweight fabrics or paper.think of the range of options!!!! This is leftover wallpaper bonded to our self adhesive PVC. We’re thinking these would make a very manageable lampshade kit complete with video instructions. What do you think? And, of course, we are happy to custom make them too. 09.10.2021 New #modularme dress!! Made by raiding my offcuts and scraps. The @marimekkoaustralia offcut was perfect for the yoke front and that became my starting point. So it was going to be a black and white dress!! This design (which is very different to what I normally wear, I must say!) was made by shortening our ModularME top pattern to create a mid-line yoke and then adding two tiers of gathered fabric. The tiers were made by stitching strips of fabric together. The fabric is al...l cotton and includes offcuts from sewing projects, recycled garments, gifted fabric and some gingham from our online store. Obviously the detailing could easily be varied: different height strips, more or less gathering, etc. This is just another example of the wide variety of simple garments that be made using our pattern. We have been putting in lots of hours to get new modules and twists ready so that you can start customising your own garments. Stay tuned for all the news. 25.09.2021 This is what I stitched today the long awaited roll collar top! It’s another version of #modularme . The fabric is a timeless linen gingham (have always been a bit partial to linen!) and feels so light to wear. I’ve teamed it with jeans and sneakers but this top will look equally at home with white pants and sandals. The neckline and collar are one of our new soon-to-be released modules. And the back features a centre back pleat which is great for extra detailing and/or for ...adding a bit more room around the hips if necessary. This pleat is one of our super easy ModularME Twists.all will be revealed soon! I love the versatility of this pattern and our sewing system. Get the fit right and then add modules and twists to make the styling your own. I’m so looking forward to sharing my sewing hints and tips and my catalogue of dressmaking detailing that I have collected over five decades of sewing. I woke up at 3.40am this morning and lay there for ages designing ModularME garments in my head! Does anyone else do that?!?
