18.01.2022 Managing the High Producer - a topic we discussed in our seminar at this years Australian Cattle Veterinarians conference. Over the years, there has been a large focus on improving milk production & productivity gains across the dairy industry. Genetic selection for higher yielding animals has proven somewhat effective, however, like all genetic decisions there is often a trade off in one area, to favour another. ... What we see in many high yielding animals is often a pronounced impact on fertility traits such as oestrus length, ovulation & conception rates. When evaluating the reproductive potential of your herd this is something that must be taken into account. Heat detection in high producers can be difficult. This is due to the shortened length of standing heat, reduced to almost no visible heat behaviours & a reduction in the oocyte quality & early embryonic survival rates. Due to the restrictive nature of this situation, where you are wanting to replicate those high producing genetics, there are a few things to consider. - your ability to detect heat - your ability to notice secondary heat signs - the logistics involved with more vigilant heat detection work - the cost of open cows/day If you are undertaking AI in high producers these are some tips that can help you achieve the best return on investment: Have a well organised record keeping system in place to keep track of missed heats, early returns & specific oestrus behaviours Utilise oestrus detection tools such as patches, collars or pedometers for more accurate timing of heat windows Consult your cattle vet to discuss the suitability of Fixed Time AI programs in your herd to eliminate the heat detection requirements Utilise Fixed Time AI at the beginning of the season across the herd, follow up heats will often be more pronounced & will improve heat detection success rates, tightening your joining window If you have any questions about the management of your dairy herd, speak to your closest #CattlePlan vet or rep. Something to remember coming into joining & across the northern wet season Your pregnancy rates will reflect the management of your herd, particularly coming out of the previous calving season & into the next joining. Pay attention to body condition scores & the results will speak for themselves!... low breeder weight through gestation & into calving means high rates of distocia, less milk production, low calf growth rates & more calf losses. low weights of breeders can mean higher mortalities & metabolic illness following calving. low BCS at calving means extended time frames for resumption of cycling breeders need to be in adequate to forward BCS to produce hormones at the right levels, for long enough periods, to ovulate sufficiently & maintain early embryo health low breeder weights tbrough calving and joining lead to poor ovulation rates, low fertilisation rates & high rates of early embryonic losses All of this adds up to low re-breed %’s, longer calving intervals & more $$ in lost production! Maximise the potential of your herd!! Nutrition matters!! An assisted breeding program is only as good as the management of the cattle going into it. Your investment in better reproductive strategies needs to be done in conjunction with good breeder management, it isn’t a bandaid for poor nutrition or grazing practices.
