24.01.2022 Shaping my new piece over a vintage bowl. Great to learn different techniques. Thanks to @craftschooloz for the great tutorials!!!

22.01.2022 The Woven wanderer - im sharing her story..... The golden light dawns upon the red desert sand in the outback. Her bare feet are gently grounded on parched earth. She feels it inhale as another day on her beloved red dirt begins. She sees the broken hills of her desert home in the distance, shaded by the gums, she weaves the coil. Her hands are quietly threading and pulling the strands to her, she begins to comprehend connections come together. Family, country , nature. ... Her journey of knowing where she came from is before her, the footprints of her ancestors have guided the way. She weaves her past; she weaves this moment and she gathers the native grasses to weave the way forward. Her thoughts filter through the net, knowledge safely held. The heat of the day passes, the breeze softly shows the path. The evening star now lights the dark. She weaves her way home

20.01.2022 Not quite what I was hoping for (but I was cheating using shibori indigo lol) anyway, I looks like the blues in the ocean so im taking it as a win

16.01.2022 And after a few hours of tying feathers in place this beauty is finished. Working on her has calmed some restlessness. She is the circle of life, days, weeks, thoughts and dreams all woven together... #nature #wallhanging #culture #coilweaving #emufeathers #raffia #indigenousart #ngarrindjeri #weave #womenswork #pride #makershands

16.01.2022 Ok... so be gentle please Im currently in the process of writing a bio for the koori heritage trust art show. Im nervous as hell and not really sure what to write, especially as this is my first time submitting to something like this, but bigger than that, its the first real step in me feeling 'culturally safe' enough to put myself out there as an indigenous women and artist. ... If you are happy to give me some feedback on how you see me, my art, my practices please send me a message- I would be so very grateful. And now that I've said all of that I'd like to thank Caz Blackmore, uncle locky Noir Hands, kakay Mel Steffensen Chris Joy and in particular Glenda Nicholls for supporting me in learning about and embracing my culture. For giving me knowledge, sharing history and family heritage. I dont profess to know much, but im committed to learning. And as always, thanks to my boys for all that you are to me and my family - love you guys xx And for those wondering why now? Its time.

16.01.2022 Progress shot. Sat myself on the daybed upstairs, watched as it got very windy outside and the clouds changed colour from white fluffy, to low and grey. The sun on my back has been devine!

16.01.2022 Introducing my latest piece... Ta'an tunnumbor- Journey Woman Peek whurrong language. ... She is 1.6 x 1.6m a massive beauty that has taken me a week and a half to complete. I was commissioned to create this piece for a beautiful family. She has a wonderful story, however it belongs to the family so I will not be sharing. So much detail, I will share some close up images later. What a privilege to be asked to create a special painting full of meaning. The colours challenged me as they are not my usual colour palette, but I think I may have fallen in love now xx #art #indigenousart #canvas #acrylicpainting #ngarrindjeri #storyteller #iconology #family #nature #journey #strongwomen

12.01.2022 'The woven wanderer' Original artwork by Emma Stenhouse Beautifully framed in gorgeous Blackwood timber by the very clever Jack Webb at @hennastframers ... Thank you Ella for sharing my delight & tears this arvo when I first saw her framed. This is a first on many levels... First time I've publicly declared myself an indigenous woman and artist (so nervous) First time submitting to an Art show and First time having my artwork professionally framed. I will share her story tomorrow, for now, I cant stop looking at it!! So very grateful for everyone's support #thewovenwanderer #originalart #indigenousart #nature #weaving #painting #acrylic #reddirt #reddirtcountry #ngarrindjeri

11.01.2022 And so it begins. My first large scale piece... Nervous, excited and inspired. Guess I will see you all in about a week until then I will be lost in the process of bringing together a beautiful story of a beautiful family ... No more pics until she is complete (and she looks nothing like this)

10.01.2022 I recently was commissioned by the Australian Breastfeeding Association, Warrnambool Branch to create a logo for next year's conference. At first I thought I'd over simplified it, but after feedback from the organisers realised this was just what it needed to be. The icons are a meeting place, women sitting and a circle of children. Abstractly It kinda looks like a nipple too! I will pretend I did that on purpose. ... Emma Fry, the Breastfeeding consultant I liased with explained that the conference has Up to 200 breastfeeding counsellors and community educators, as well as trainees. It’s 2 days of education about breastfeeding and issues/research related to breastfeeding. Guest speakers include Health Professionals who work directly with mother and babies, researchers. We have counsellors who have lived experience in specific areas, like breastfeeding a baby with Down syndrome, cleft palates, premature babies, inducing lactation for adoptive parents or non birthing mothers. We also aimed to be more inclusive of Indigenous women in our communities - well that ticks all the boxes for me. I hope its a wonderful conference and thanks for allowing my artwork to represent Warrnambool xx @mrs_emma_fry

10.01.2022 My painting is inspiring other projects

10.01.2022 "Scarsdale Sleepy" This small basket has been woven in raffia, and finished with Sleepy lizard rib bones, kindly and thoughtfully collected from the red dirt of Scarsdale Station. These lizards were a much loved part of my childhood. Being a tom boy I regularly caught, admired and then released these beauty's. I distinctly remember how the shingleback scales felt in my hand. ... Did you know these lizards are monogamous, the male will follow the female closely for up to 8 weeks before they mate. Studies have shown they grieve the loss of their mate. So I honour this lizard and know it was loved #weaving #fibreart #raffia #nature #shingleback #scarsdale #reddirt #thelovelybones #outbacknsw #coilweaving @theshadybaker @theraffiaconnection @craftschooloz

06.01.2022 So close to being finished... just need to add some driftwood handles tomorrow

04.01.2022 Today was delivery day! Literally she passed from my hands to yours. She is the story of women, the circle of our life; days, weeks, years, thoughts and hopes woven together. ... A woman is a handmaker. She often quietly and continually weaves threads from around her and within her to build her own core. The core of who she is. It grows stronger as she does. Pulling and stitching the threads together, binding and building to create a place where she can give from. Many small and fine strands are unified to generate strength. She is a symbol of softness and ingenuity. She flourishes, she fails, she hopes, she has fortitude. Above all else she weaves with resilience... The circle represents the coming together of women, of unity by hand and heart. The net is a linking stitch that binds us all together and the Emu feathers, both soft yet strong capture our ability to be secure and resolute when needed, and tender and peaceful during life's trials. We use our hands to hold, to soothe and to nurture. We use our hands to create and unify. And so she is titled "The woman's weave" Thank you Ella for collecting one of my pieces xxxxx much love and gratitude for being you
