25.01.2022 The Hamstring Jar As Bowen moves are all about creating awareness and input as we work our way through the body, the Hamstring Jar is literally a pot of gol...d and is arguably responsible for the largest effect in change created with the Hamstring Procedure. The jar on the metatarsal pad creates an array of sensory input that leads the body to respond with immediate effect as we all know, and as shown in the Hamstring study done by J.Baker/M.Marr. The reasoning being that it firstly, creates input regarding Plantar Fascia tension between the metatarsals and the heel, and that a change in this structure would create a shift of balance in the body. Secondly, that it creates input regarding the tension through the Achilles tendon, therefore affecting the calf muscles, and ultimately the Hamstrings, which are all in fascial continuity with each other through function. The Achilles Tendon Reflex also plays a major part in spinal reflexes and proprioception, and directly linked to S1/S2 spinal root nerves. The jar seems to create a reverberation effect and can often be felt running up the leg and into the spinal area. (One of my clients felt it running up the leg, all along the spine, down the opposite side of the spine and down the opposite leg). This reverberation will travel through the hamstrings, following the fascial pathway into the Sacrotuberous ligament, leading into the Thoracolumbar Fascia - the common lower back pain area. Which would be one of the reasons why this procedure is so great for lower back pain. It is therefore important to note that there should be no obstruction to the Achilles tendon by the holding hand whilst the jar is performed in order for the vibration to travel. 24.01.2022 Biomechanically the pelvis and shoulder are linked. This is what is referred to as a Myofascial sling. The hamstrings starting from the tibia then insert into t...he Ischial tuberosity. This then continues along as the Sacro-tuberous ligament and then through the thoraco-Lumbar fascia. This then continues to the Latissimus dorsi which then inserts into the opposite scapula and humerus. Therefore your Hamstrings actually attach to your arms!!! So....if there is tension through this sling caused from a rotated pelvis, then the infraspinatus (a muscle on the scapula) can go into spasm and so prevents the biomechanical function of the shoulder. This is a common cause of shoulder injuries. In order to reduce risk of shoulder injuries the pelvis must be in good biomechanical shape. Therefore if you have shoulder pain, then you will need to have your pelvis assessed. I'm really not going crazy if I assess your pelvis before looking at your shoulder! 22.01.2022 "Complementary therapies such as Bowen Therapy can be a useful tool to help with self-management (of chronic pain), particularly we think that bowen can aid rel...axation, ease muscle tension/ discomfort and enable the Autonomic Nervous System to switch from 'fight and flight' (sympathetic) to 'rest, relax and repair' (parasympathetic) mode." 22.01.2022 This blog on shoulders is becoming bigger than Ben Hur ! Trying to describe the anatomy of the shoulder, and all the muscles that hold it in place, seems to b...e a blog in itself... I think there'll be follow-up blogs after this one (hopefully tomorrow !) to review some of the nuances of how the shoulder works... and some of the things that go wrong... My Anatomy Trains book has been back out again... looking at the fascia lines of the arms and body... they're all linked... if the body isn't in good alignment, then the shoulders have no hope ! Look out for the blog tomorrow... I hope !
18.01.2022 "Bowen Therapy is a holistic healing modality. This means that no ailment is treated in isolation the entire body is addressed as a whole. This is particularl...y effective in the treatment of headaches and migraines, which may have multiple potential causes. Allopathic treatments are largely focused on the symptoms (such as the throbbing pain in your head) as opposed to the cause which may originate from one or more underlying musculoskeletal and/or physiological dysfunctions. Bowen Therapy offers an effective alternative treatment for both acute and chronic primary headaches, including migraines, tension headaches, cluster headaches, etc. Bowen Therapy is a natural, holistic approach to healing, using precise, targeted stimuli to activate the central nervous system addressing dysfunctions within the body and activating the body’s natural ability for self-regulation and healing thus restoring balance." 18.01.2022 Raising your vagal tone can boost your immune system, reduce inflammation and increase feelings of wellbeing and contentment. Did you know that low vagal tone i...s associated with cardiovascular diseases, strokes, diabetes, depression, chronic fatigue and other auto-immune disorders, and much higher rates of all inflammatory conditions including endometriosis, Crohn’s, lupus etc.? The slow, gentle touches of Bowen therapy can activate the vagus nerve. There's even a specific vagus nerve procedure. Contact your friendly Bowen therapist to learn how it may help you by visiting www.bowen.org.au. 14.01.2022 "'Put simply, Bowen initiates the healing response in the body,' says Patrick. The movements intervene with the brain’s signals to prompt the body to let go of ...tension, stress and emotional baggage, as well as restoring our posture back to the ‘blueprint’ alignment that we have stored innately in our brains. Fundamentally, Bowen Technique is all about the body doing the work; the therapist gives you a message, and the body does the rest." In Australia? Visit www.bowen.org.au to find a Bowen therapist. 13.01.2022 Click here for more info: bit.ly/LMContEd . Why are semitendinosus and semimembranosis of the hamstring group so named?? . This video clip is from a longe...r video lesson on LearnMuscles Continuing Education (LMCE), my video streaming subscription service for manual therapists and movement professionals. . The semitendinosus has a very long distal tendon, so it is semi tendonous, or semitendinosus. . The semimembranosis has a broad flat membranous proximal attachment, so it is semi membranous, or semimembranosis. . (Sorry that Instagram squares out the video so you can’t see all of the distal tendon of semitendinosus. ) . Check out LMCE, my video streaming subscription service for manual therapists and movement professionals, with more than 1,000 video lessons, and I add 7 new video lessons each and every week!! . And LMCE has about 100 video lessons on cadaver anatomy. . And LMCE has over 175 free NCBTMB CE hours for massage therapists and body workers. . Subscribe now (April) and receive a lifetime discount of 20% and a free e-booklet (5 of them if you subscribe yearly!). . This is the largest discount that we ever give on social media, so take advantage of it! . bit.ly/LMContEd . 09.01.2022 I have a lot of clients who have tight spoas muscles or a spoas muscle not working. I usually show them to stretch it by standing on a step on 1 leg and letting... the other leg hang. But in this blog it shows another way. The psoas muscle is the muscle that keeps us upright but it is also the hidden culprit to back pain. See more

06.01.2022 The first in probably a series of writing about the shoulders... there's a lot going on with the shoulders and muscles required to make them work as you'd like ...! "If the body is tilted, twisted or out of balance, then the shoulders have very little chance of being in their correct position." "The main goal of most Bowen Therapists is to restore symmetry in the body. When the body has returned to symmetry, it’s then possible to feel what part of the shoulder’s musculature remains as problematic."
02.01.2022 This article has some good images to build on yesterday's blog about shoulders... showing how muscles impact the angles and position of the scapula... I promise that next week we'll be off shoulders - any requests ?
