24.01.2022 Tips to add good fats to your diet! Adding good fats during treatment is very important for preventing excess weight loss, modulating inflammation and supporting fatty tissues such as the brain. However we want to avoid saturated fats such as dairy as they are highly pro-inflammatory. Better options include: - extra virgin olive oil for cooking (not too hot) and drizzled onto veggies, salads and into soups and stews... - chia oil: never heated, just raw onto salads - macadamia oil and avocado oil for variety - fish, eg mackerel, sardines, flathead, salmon etc - nuts and seeds - coconut oil eg for making bliss balls - coconut milk and cream - think curries, smoothies and chia puddings - avocado on everything! #goodfats #omega3 #antiinflammatory #cancertreatment #brainfood #foodasmedicine #integrativemedicine #integrativeoncology #miog See more
24.01.2022 How much water do you drink? The most common answer we get to that question is "probably not enough". Especially during winter, when our body's thirst response significantly diminishes, people tend to simply forget to drink. Home heating however is very drying and further increases the need for hydration. Remember that just because youre not thirsty doesnt mean that your body is hydrated. ... Symptoms of dehydration can include - headaches - dry or red skin - chapped lips - dark yellow urine - constipation Hydration will help to regulate body temperature, support circulation of blood which carries important nutrients and oxygen around your body as well as help with toxin removal. It also protects your lovely kidneys and promotes healthy bowel function. If water isn't your jam, try herbal teas (green tea included), fresh veggie juices, water with lemon etc. Also increasing your water rich foods will help: watermelon, cucumber, oranges, bok choy, blueberries, spinach, celery, strawberries, pineapple, orange, grapes, tomato. Drink up! #water #hydration #healthykidneys #healthybowels #guthealth #winter #melbournewinter #h2o #nutrition #nutritionist #naturopathy #foodasmedicine #miog

21.01.2022 Having diversity in your diet is important to encourage healthy gut bacteria and support the immune system. Consuming different varieties of milks is one way to increase diversity in your diet and keep things from getting boring! When choosing milk, pick one with only a few ingredients and ensure there are no gums, thickeners, preservatives or sugar added. Or, try making your own plant based milk by soaking then blending organic nuts, seeds or oats in filtered water, then st...rain and keep in a glass container in the fridge. Our favourite milks are: Almond milk: One study found that almond milk suppressed the growth of prostate cancer cells by over 30%. Try it with your morning oats or as the base for a smoothie. Favourite brands: Nutty Bruce (unsweetened); Australia's Own Organic (unsweetened) Oat milk: Oat milk has a smooth and mild flavour and is high in Vitamin A and iron. It can be used in tea, added to sauces and savoury dishes, or in smoothies and baked goods. Favourite brand: Pure Harvest (unsweetened, original) Coconut milk: Rich in Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT)’s coconut milk has a creamy flavour and can be used in curries, as a salad dressing or as a base for a smoothie or homemade ice-cream! Favourite brand: Nutty Bruce Soy milk: Soy milk is high in protein and calcium. It makes a good replacement milk for tea and coffee. Ensure to choose a soy milk made with whole organic soya beans and not protein isolates Favourite brand: Pure Harvest (original) - #milk #healthygut #guthealth #guthealthmatters #immunesystem #immunesupport #almondmilk #oatmilk #coconutmilk #soymilk #health #healthylifestyle

20.01.2022 Is it a treatment day? You come home feeling tired, not much of an appetite and definitely not in the mood to cook. Enter, the slow cooker! Slow cooker meals are an excellent way to prepare food, especially in these colder months. They create warming and nourishing meals, that are easier on digestion and tasty to boot. The best part is, they often take 10-15 minutes to prepare, and you can set and forget - then come home to a kitchen that smells heavenly. Try this reci...pe for Slow Cooker Red Lentil Soup -2 tbsp of olive oil -1 onion, chopped -3 cloves of garlic -2 celery stalks, chopped -2 carrots, chopped -1 sweet potato, chopped -1 cup of dry red lentils -1 tsp of turmeric powder -1 tsp of cumin -1 tsp of cinnamon powder -salt and pepper to taste -1 can of coconut milk -6 cups of water or bone broth Turn slow cooker on high, add olive oil to the bottom of the pot. Add vegetables, lentils and spices and then coconut milk, water or bone broth. Cover and cook on high for 6-8 hours. 20.01.2022 Are you on the Iso-Sourdough bandwagon? If not, you must give it a go. Bread has been given a bad rep in the past 10-15 years as people have become more aware of fructose and gluten sensitivities. But is all bread bad? Sourdough bread is made from flour, water, salt and levain, a naturally leavened yeast. This makes true sourdough void of additives and preservatives like most commercial breads. Research indicates that the presence of phytates in wholegrain bread (found in ...the bran part of the wheat) are associated with digestive upset, as they inhibit enzymes from breaking them down. However, the lactobacillus (probiotic) and wild yeast found in sourdough have the ability to neutralise these phytates during the proving process, which makes sourdough easier to digest. As long as you are not coeliac, this might be a more tolerable option for you. We are lucky in Melbourne to have many incredible true sourdough bakeries. Then again whilst in isolation, why not try making your own... #sourdough #guthealth #healthy #health #healthyfood #miog #melbournenaturopath #integrativeoncology #nutrition #nutritionist #naturopath #naturalmedicine
20.01.2022 To pasta, or not to pasta? Just read a very interesting review article on some of the talks at the Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association, held virtually in June 2020. The author (a Medical Doctor and director of nutrition and weight management at the Boston University School of Medicine) summarises three talks that focus on the development and evolution of Metabolic Disease. The talks discuss whether carbohydrates are the culprit of insulin dysfunction,... and whether a low-fat or low-carb is more protective of this modern and very prevalent disease. A key point the author makes is that the nature of our carbohydrates has changed. Historically, our ancestors thrived on both high-fat and high-carb diets. Communities in warm climates used to consume more high-carb diets, while communities in cold climates lent more toward high-fat, meat-eating patterns. Metabolic Disease however only started to become a problem in since the 1900, with the advances of agriculture and food processing industries. Carbohydrates are becoming increasingly refined, with many additional ingredients and non-food chemicals that cause insulin secretion. Also, studies show that consuming these "ultraprocessed foods" leads to an increase in body fat mass and an average intake of 500 more calories per day, compared to people on wholefood diets. The take away? Carbs are not the devil. The TYPE of carbs are the problem. Avoid anything white or processed or with additives. But unrefined, unprocessed, complex carbohydrates can absolutely be part of a balanced diet in most situations. Choose wholefoods where possible (eg sweet potatoes, legumes, rolled oats, brown rice); pair with a good source of protein, some essential fats and some brightly coloured veggies and you are good to go. And like anything, moderation is key. #carbs #carbohydrates #thatcarblyfe #dontneedtobeketo #complexcarbs #balance #fibre #nutrients #wholefoods #goodness #eatwell #natural #nutrition #foodasmedicine #melbourne #miog See more
19.01.2022 The targets of psychological support during the whirlwind that is cancer are plentiful - stress and anxiety reduction, coping with fear, coping with change, identity discussions, spiritual discussions, assistance with physical problems, emotional problems and practical issues, and supporting general health and family. 19.01.2022 Naturopaths and nutritionists bang on about the importance of protein a lot, dont we? Well, it is very important. Proteins (aka amino acids) are the building blocks of our all our cells. They help with growth, detox, repair, and regeneration of our cells and tissues. If you are going through treatment or have recently undergone surgery, then protein is extremely important for your recovery. How can you add extra protein into your diet?... - Eggs for breakfast! - Ground nuts and seeds added to porridge and smoothies - Protein powder added to porridge and smoothies - Tinned or jarred fish: sardines, mackerel and wild salmon are great pantry staples. You can add them to rice cakes, salads or make fish patties or dips. - Chickpeas and beans (tinned or dry) make a great addition to salads, curries and stews. Have you ever added lentils to bolognese? Or if you feel adventurous, try making some falafel! - Nut butter! Almond butter, peanut butter or an ABC butter spread on celery sticks or apple slices is a delicious treat. #protein #proteinlife #plantbased #heal #detox #macros #fitspo #cancerhealth #cancersupport #complementarymedicine #foodismedicine #nourish #eat #eatyourselfwell #vegan #paleo #balance #miog

18.01.2022 What should I eat? This is one of the most common questions we hear in clinic, and unfortunately hospitals simply do not give enough comprehensive, evidence-based information to support you. 18.01.2022 Sleep can easily be affected, especially with elevated stress levels, medications such as steroids, hormonal changes, hot weather, or a change in routine. Certainly reduced physical activity, exercise and sunshine whilst in lockdown can be the culprit. It's important to keep a consistent circadian rhythm, ie is our internal clock. This sleep/wake cycle is impacted by our daily routines, daylight and our environment in general. If you’ve been struggling to fall asleep at nigh...t, or stay asleep, try these tips for sleep hygiene. - Avoid caffeine for up to 6 hours before bedtime, at least! (and remember, some green tea and dark chocolate also contain caffeine). - Avoid any other stimulants before bedtime, such as alcohol or sugar. - Try to keep to the same bedtime every night. - Avoid screen time (this means phones too!) for up to 2 hours before bedtime. The backlit light does not do our brain and sleep signals any favours! - Introduce a soothing bedtime routine: eg light candles, read a book, keep the lights dim, and go to sleep when you truly feel tired. - Meditate or listen to a sleep story before bedtime. Calm app has some very relaxing sleep stories to help get you off to dreamland, or even an audiobook might be something different to try. - Now that weather is warming up: exercise early in the day. This secretes our stress hormone, cortisol, which can keep us more awake and alert (so you want to avoid this in the evenings). Otherwise, try some gentle yin yoga in the evening if you still are craving some movement. - Have a cup of relaxing chamomile tea, but not too much! Regulating your fluids throughout the day to ensure you are hydrated, but avoid too many fluids in the evening to ensure don't have to wake up to use the toilet. - Ask your naturopath or nutritionist if herbs and nutrients such as Magnesium, passionflower, valerian, or zizyphus could help to get you the rest you need. #sleep #sleephygiene #lockdown #melbourne #cancer #health #healthylife #evidencebasedmedicine #miog #melbournenaturopath #integrativeoncology #nutrition #nutritionist #naturopath #naturalmedicine #melbourneintegrativeoncologygroup
18.01.2022 Need a healthy dinner idea? Nothing easier than a one-tray-bake. They are all about putting together a protein and a range of veggies into a baking dish and putting it into the oven, perfect way to warm the home during winter. How about a Miso Salmon and Veggie dish? Ingredients:... 2 salmon fillets, organic 1 bunch broccolini 1 sweet potato (or any other veggies you have lying around) 1 tbsp sesame seeds 1 tsp olive or coconut oil 1 tsp sea salt Marinade: 2 tbsp miso paste Method: 1. Preheat oven to 200C (180C if fan-forced) 2. Chop the veggies and place in a bowl, toss in oil, sea salt and sesame seeds and arrange on a baking tray. (If using sweet potato, these need to be slices fairly thinly to allow them to cook quickly). 3. Then, smear the miso paste all over the salmon. 4. Place two salmon fillets in the middle of the baking tray, surrounded by broccolini and sweet potato (or other veggies). Place in the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes. 6. 17.01.2022 Chocolate is not something you have to give up if you have cancer. Yes you read that right! Hooray! 16.01.2022 White carbs are a product of agriculture, highly refined and stripped of valuable nutrients including B Vitamins, protein and fibre. They cause havoc with our metabolism on many levels, and really should not be a staple food in anyone's household. Oncology research shows that carbohydrate restriction reduces the production of phospholipids and inhibits insulin like growth factors (IGF), reducing insulin resistance and supporting better hormone balance. This does not mean ...the exclusion of ALL grains and carbs, but the overall reduction of carbohydrate intake, and particularly the minimisation or even elimination of refined "white" carbs. Here are some useful swaps: - white rice for brown rice, buckwheat or quinoa - sweet cereal or weetbix for whole rolled oats - white potatoes for sweet potato, legumes or non starchy veggies - white flour for wholegrain spelt four or almond meal Can you create a meal that only contains minimal starchy carbs, and instead is rich in colourful veggies? #carbs #carbrestriction #insulinmanagement #diabetes #cancermanagement #cancerprevention #metabolism #metabolicdisease #integrativemedicine #foodasmedicine #miog See more

14.01.2022 During colder weather many people struggle to consume raw foods due to diminished digestive capacity. Soaking your nuts, seeds and legumes breaks down the phytic acid and enzyme inhibitors found in their outer layers. This greatly facilitates digestion and absorption of all the beautiful micronutrients and vitamins that nuts, seeds and legumes contain. All you need to do is wash them thoroughly, then store in a container with (ideally) filtered water overnight. Strain and wa...sh again the next morning. Legumes will then need to be cooked, although nuts and seeds can simply be eaten from the fridge, it's actually very yummy. 14.01.2022 First of the month means "check your boobs day". It's easy and oh so important for ladies young and old. Here's how. 1. Stand in front of the mirror with your hand on your hips. Look at your breasts - notice if they are their usual shape, size and colour. There shouldn't be any visible swelling or distortion noticeable. ... Things to notice and bring to your doctor's attention: - Dimpling, puckering, or bulging of the skin, changes to the nipple eg redness, soreness, rash, swelling or discharge. 2. Still standing in front of the mirror, raise your arms and look for the changes outlined above. 3. Now feel your breasts whilst standing. Use your right hand to feel your left breast, and left hand to feel your right breast. Keep fingers flat and together, use a circulation motion to feel around the entire breast - top to bottom, side to side. Go as wide as your armpit and all the way in to where your breasts meet. Use a firm, smooth touch. You can also move your fingers up and down your breast, vertically in rows. 4. Lie down and feel your breasts with your arm behind your head. Repeat the motions outlined in step 3. 5. If you have any concerns, contact your GP as soon as possible, don't put it off. 11.01.2022 Lets talk collagen. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body, and is what keeps your tissues (including your skin, hair and nails) plump, healthy and bouncy - that's why collagen is often found in beauty products. But it actually does much more than that. It is responsible for many physiological functions including maintaining the structure of your skin, organs, bones, muscles and tendons; it helps your blood clot properly, and it helps keep your intestinal lining ...strong and healthy. It is also anti-inflammatory and important for wound repair, which is why at MIOG, we often use collagen for recovery from surgery and to improve your gut health. Where can you find collagen? A popular source at the moment is organic bone broth, as collagen is found in the bones and cartilage of red meat bones. You can also get collagen supplement powders which you can add to smoothies or soups. And in addition to dietary collagen, eating foods rich in vitamin C can promote collagen production in the body. 11.01.2022 Yay, the days are getting longer and the sun is starting to peep through those clouds more often. Weve all heard how important Vitamin D is for bone health and our immune system, and there is increasing research showing the protective effects of Vitamin D in various types of cancer. We also know that the best way for us to absorb Vitamin D is through sunlight, yet we are spending more time indoors than ever. ... Other than trying to get a good 15-20 minutes out in the sun each day, there are some foods that contain the sunshine Vitamin and help support those levels. For example - Eggs (particularly egg yolk) - Salmon and other oily fish - Full fat diary (eg organic natural yoghurt) - Mushrooms - pro tip: leave your mushies out in the sun for 15 minutes before cooking and they absorb more Vit D! In an ideal world, your body turns beautiful organic nutrient dense food into energy to aid in all biochemical processes to help you function at your absolute best. But, unfortunately, it doesn't quite happen this way. Organic food is expensive, and soil these days is not as rich in nutrients as we would like. Much produce is genetically modified, and processed food is virtually ...devoid of essential minerals and nutrients. Then there is gut health - does our gut and body even absorb nutrients efficiently? If you are going through cancer treatment, or have any other gut related conditions, then you may not be absorbing everything you need. These are just a few reasons we supplement. We want you feel a real benefit and improvement from receiving integrative care, and sometimes we just need a big therapeutic dose to support your effectively. - All of our supplements are practitioner only products. Meaning only a tertiary educated and insured practitioner is able to prescribe them. These are higher quality and higher dose products than the ones you pick up at the local chemist. - We use research and evidence based knowledge in order to prescribe the best supplements for YOU. Everything we prescribe is individualised and there is no one size fits all treatment. - It's not forever. Eventually we want to get back to relying mostly on good quality, fresh food to get our nutrients. So hang in there! #supplements #vitamins #health #healthylife #naturalmedicine #therapeutic #cancer #health #healthylife #evidencebasedmedicine #melbournenaturopath #integrativeoncology #nutrition #nutritionist #naturopath #miog See more

It can range from mild tingling of the hands, feet or lips to an inability to walk, drive and do up your own buttons. Severe cases may also lead to dose reductions in treatment. A large review found that prevalence of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) was 68.1% after the first month of chemo, and up to 90% with certain types of chemo drugs. And in a study of breast cancer survivor...s, nearly half (47%) still experienced CIPN 6 years after the completion of their treatment. There are complementary therapies including specific, evidence-based supplements as well as Acupuncture that can help prevent, manage or at least minimise the symptoms of CIPN. 07.01.2022 This has got to be one of our favourite bread recipes - the Life Changing Loaf of Bread by @mynewroots. Crunchy, and full of nuts and seeds, it a great fibre and nutrient boost. An absolute must try! Ingredients: 1 cup sunflower seeds cup flax seeds... cup hazelnuts or almonds 1 cups rolled oats 2 tbsp chia seeds 4 tbsp psyllium seed husks 1 tsp fine grain sea salt (add tsp. if using coarse salt) 1 tbsp maple syrup or a pinch of stevia 3 tbsp melted coconut oil or ghee 1 cups water Directions: 1. In a flexible, silicon loaf pan combine all dry ingredients, stirring well. Whisk maple syrup, oil and water together in a measuring cup. Add this to the dry ingredients and mix very well until everything is completely soaked and dough becomes very thick (if the dough is too thick to stir, add one or two teaspoons of water until the dough is manageable). Smooth out the top with the back of a spoon. Let sit out on the counter for at least 2 hours, or all day or overnight. To ensure the dough is ready, it should retain its shape even when you pull the sides of the loaf pan away from it it. 2. Preheat oven to 350F / 175C. 3. Place loaf pan in the oven on the middle rack, and bake for 20 minutes. Remove bread from loaf pan, place it upside down directly on the rack and bake for another 30-40 minutes. Bread is done when it sounds hollow when tapped. Let cool completely before slicing. 4. Store bread in a tightly sealed container for up to five days. Freezes well too slice before freezing for quick and easy toast! #bread #carbs #healthy #fibre #protein #homemade #delicious #glutenfree #miog

05.01.2022 Hooray for smoothie weather! Here are some tips to help you build a delicious, nutrient dense smoothie. 1. Choose your fruit. We like using frozen or fresh berries that are low in sugar and high in antioxidants! ... 2. Add some veggies. We never shy away from an opportunity to add veggies to a meal. Adding spinach will give you the nutrient benefits, but not taste like you’ve added anything green. Kale, avocado, zucchini and cauliflower are also great options! Have you ever used mashed, roasted pumpkin? Yumm! 3. Next, add some nutrient powerhouses. We love chia and hemp seeds for added protein and healthy fats. Protein powder is a great way to turn your smoothie into a meal that will keep you full for longer. Oats add fibre, and nut butter makes it all creamy and gooey. Finish with a generous pinch of cinnamon to help balance your blood sugar levels. 4. Add your liquid. Almond milk, coconut milk, oat milk or even just water are great options! For extra hydration and electrolytes, try coconut water too. 03.01.2022 For many people undergoing cancer treatment, thick, long and luscious hair is a thing of the past. And many don't expect the emotional impact that loosing hair can have. If you are really dreading hair loss, you may want to try a cold cap. Cold caps are worn 20-50 minutes before, during and after chemotherapy treatments. 01.01.2022 We know there are health benefits from honey, but bee venom? New research coming out of the University of Western Australia has shown that a potent venom from honeybees can kill cancer cells in triple-negative breast cancer, and without harming healthy cells! Venom was tested from 312 bees on breast cancer cells. The active compound: Melittin, at the right dose, was able to kill breast cancer cells in 60 minutes, and also intercept the messenger systems responsible for cance...r cell growth and replication. And what else is great: the researchers were able to we synthetically reproduce Melittin and found that the synthetic product mirrored the majority of the anti-cancer effects of the precious honeybee venom. Further testing is of course required, including safety, dosing and delivery methods. This is definitely research that we will be watching! #research #groundbreaking #naturalmedicine #nature #bees #intrgrativeoncology #integrativemedicine #cancersupport #complementarymedicine #cancer #oncology #melbourenaturopath #cancernaturopath #miog
