16.01.2022 I'm not sure how companies can still get away with this. 'Superfood' pancake mix. With a whopping 0.4% kale powder. Wow! So that means, if you eat the entire b...atch of pancakes, you will get an amazing 0.7grams of kale in your belly. Wow, just over half of one gram of kale. And if you have just one serving of pancakes, then you will get an amazing 0.077 grams of kale. And it's the same for the spinach powder. I can feel the superfoods just running through my veins, just thinking about it! They're actually high in salt, at 559mg per 100 grams. Anything over 400mg per 100g is a high salt food, anything under 140 is a low salt food. We should try and stick to the lower end. Contains two types of sugar (not that sugar or pancakes are a bad food. No food is good or bad). That's a story for another day. But it's important to remember that just because this product has 'superfood' on it, it doesn't mean it's a magic elixir. It's just a pancake mixture. It's just food.

16.01.2022 You've probably seen the recent press around the CSIRO Flexi diet study. The Flexi diet involves fasting intermittently for 3 days of the week, eating more of a... calorie-controlled diet on another 3 days, and a ‘flexi day’ each week where you can eat freely. Meal replacement shakes are also used for some of the meals. Fasting days are not true starvation periods though as you can still eat between 2500 kilojoules and 4500 kilojoules depending on your body size. In 4-month trial, people following the Flexi diet lost an average of 11 kilograms. Cholesterol, blood pressure, insulin and glucose all saw favourable changes. The results looked impressive, but what the media headlines didn't give as much attention to was that the control group who were on a more traditional calorie-controlled diet for 7 days a week consisting of two meal replacements and one healthy meal of vegetables and protein also had the same amount weight loss. Fasting diets do work for weight loss, but not everyone has the same success. And when you compare them to more traditional diets, they don’t offer an extra advantage for long-term weight loss. A recent review of 9 intermittent fasting weight loss trials that ran for a minimum of 6 months found both intermittent fasting or just ongoing energy restriction produced the same amount of weight loss. http://www.mdpi.com/2072-6643/8/6/354 Fasting diets are not for everyone. For a start, being hungry for long periods of time is not pleasant. And the focus on food deprivation is a red flag for creating a disordered relationship with food. There is no one best version of a fasting diet. A fasting protocol that works for one person could be another’s idea of hell.
