25.01.2022 We are overwhelmed by the heartwarming messages coming through. Keep them coming. We look forward to sharing these with the hospitals. There is still time to recognise the Hospital and their team that cared for your premature or sick newborn. Leave your message here: https://www.miraclebabies.org.au//thank-u-nicu-day-/gjyhvs Today is Thank U NICU Day, a day to recognise and thank the NICU and SCN teams that care for premature and sick newborns every day. ... Sadly, due to restrictions in place, our past families were unable to visit the hospitals to say thank you in person this year, however we are glad that we can continue to provide a way to share your gratitude and pass on your messages from a distance. Thank you also BabyLove for their ongoing support for Thank U NICU Day. #ThankUNICUDay #NICUAwarenessMonth #NICU #SCN #MiracleBabies #prematurebabies #sicknewborns

25.01.2022 Flashback to December 2019 when Miracle Babies Founder, Melinda Cruz and CEO (also CoFounder) Kylie Pussell, visited Seoul to attend the KFHI Health Symposium to share the work of the Foundation including insights on how to set up and sustain a professional parent program. Miracle Babies was invited by Korea Food for the Hungry International (KFHI), a Non Government Organisation operating for more than 30 years, who provide foreign aid but also have recently turned their at...tention domestically to support South Korean families who experience the birth of an extremely premature baby. This was one of many invitations Miracle Babies has had to share our learnings and help other organisations in various countries achieve better outcomes for premature and sick newborns and their families. Such an incredible memory and experience. 25.01.2022 Today, Monday 14th June, is World Blood Donor Day. Donating blood and blood products, saves lives. Miracle Mum, Rachel, donates blood regularly as she knows just how vital blood donors are. Rachel shares, 'This is the day I woke from my coma to learn we had survived. This is how we announced her birth, our miracle baby born too soon at just 26 weeks gestation. The end of my fight was the start of hers. Everyday we are thankful for her strength, a born fighter. We are thankful... for the blood donors who saved us both. Without those donations I wouldn't have woken up. It took 14 units to save my life. And we are thankful for the doctors and nurses who worked round the clock to keep us alive and who fought alongside our miracle baby for twelve long weeks. We will never forget you.' Not only did Rachel need blood, but Rachel's daughter Estelle did as well. She needed a transfusion of plasma and blood during her time in NICU, which can be fairly typical for babies born premature. 24.01.2022 Miracle Mum, Maria shares her daughter Isabella's story. "I got admited to St George Private Hospital with pre-eclampsia at 31 weeks and I was put on bed rest for two weeks. At 33 weeks the doctors decided to deliver as my baby wasn't growing anymore. I was transfered by ambulance to Liverpool Hospital because Isabella's weight was very low and the hospital had the appropriate facilities if there were any more complications at delivery. Isabella was born on 6th of August 2010... by c-section, weighing only 1kg. We are very thankful to the doctors and nurses who were with us through this journey. Isabella spent two weeks in NICU at Liverpool Hospital and then was transfered to St George Private Hospital for six weeks. We left hospital when she finally weghed 2kg. We are so proud of Isabella who will turn 10 in few days. Her development has been very close to a normal full term baby. We are so lucky to have her, our first Miracle baby who we love to the moon and back. She is a very generous, intelligent, caring and loving young girl, who brings so much joy to our lives." 23.01.2022 Miracle Mum, Summa quit work early in order to stay healthy while pregnant. However, a week later she went into labour. She shares the story of her baby Ivy's sudden arrival and how she navigated a stressful time in the hospital. "At our 12 week scan, they predicted that our baby was going to be premature due to several factors including foetal growth restriction and preeclampsia. At our 20 week obstetrician appointment our doctor suggested that all of this was untrue and I h...ad nothing to worry about as I looked young and healthy. In May and June we had a couple of scares with unexplained blood loss. After this I decided to finish up at work as I needed to concentrate on keeping healthy. A week later after finishing work I caught a common cold from a family member and felt like I had been hit by a car. I called the hospital due to bad back pain, very unaware that I was actually in labour. By the time we got there I was fully dilated and ready to go at only 33weeks gestation. 45 minutes later our beautiful baby Ivy arrived at 1990grams and 42cm long. She had jaundice return 4 times, was tube fed and we both needed antibiotics for septicaemia. Waking up every 3 hours to feed/pump for baby in a different section of the hospital then running back to get your own antibiotics 1.5 hours later is testing. Though, not as hard as seeing the pain and the struggle of the countless needles and tests Ivy needed. In NICU/SCN you are continuously asking when you get to go home, when can you hold your baby without permission, when will you ever be able to breastfeed without a tube. And trying not to offend family members/friends that they can only look at baby through a glass. Our 'tiny Ivy' spent 25 days in SCN and I spent every day and night watching her grow very slowly. She is now in the 97th percentile in weight and has the biggest laugh you have ever heard." 21.01.2022 *'15 Years of Nurturing' Highlight* NurtureProgram development and establishment nationally in 2010. Initially, Miracle Babies worked closely with Liverpool hospital to run parent support groups in-hospital. As positive outcomes from these parent support programs became evident, Miracle Babies was invited to take part in several nursing conferences and training courses offering a parent's perspective of the NICU experience. This introduced our programs to staff from other NIC...Us around the country who began inquiring about extending our services to more families. As the demand for our services increased it became clear there was a gap for this style of support service for families going through this journey. Over time Miracle Babies has expanded our in-hospital NurtureTime support and out of hospital NurtureGroup support all across Australia, with the NurtureProgram covering all states and territories over our 15 years of Nurturing. 'My family and I have been attending the Miracle Babies NurtureGroups and have absolutely loved it. Being able to connect with other families who have been through a similar journey has really helped overcome many mental health struggles I have had. We feel very blessed to be a part of an amazing organisation'. Chelsea (WA). During these difficult times and with social distancing guidelines, its important we stay connected and care for each other. Our NurtureTime Online sessions are a great way to meet and share your journey with other NICU/SCN families whilst protecting the health of your family through our online sessions, says Kylie Pussell. We need your help to help us continue to provide support to more of the 48,000 miracle babies and their families each year. 21.01.2022 *'15 Years of Nurturing' Highlight* In 2008, Melinda Cruz became the first parent invited to speak at medical conferences in the neonatal field. Miracle Babies was immensely proud to be a part of the 2008 NSW Association of Neonatal Nurses Annual Conference. Melinda Cruz was invited to speak at the event about what we do as an organisation, who we support, and to share her journey as a Miracle Mum. This was the first time in conference history, the thoughts of a parent was he...ard. Sharing my story publicly for the first time was one of the hardest things Ive ever done. I found it hard to finish my talk as I couldnt read the words I had written through my tears. One of the neonatal nurses from the audience came up onto the stage and stood by me to help me through it. Ill never forget how touched I was by that. Melinda Cruz. This was a proud moment for Miracle Babies, and a turning point in establishing a key voice for parents, in the mission to 'achieve better, healthier outcomes for premature and sick newborns and their families'. Since then, Miracle Babies has continued to increase its impact, becoming a key representative body in research, clinical trials and breakthrough initiatives as a parent advocate. 21.01.2022 *'15 Years of Nurturing' Highlight* One of the most important milestones for Miracle Babies in the last 15 years - Development of our family support services and resources. As we reflect on the last 15 years, this has been one of the most significant milestones for the Foundation, with the NurtureProgram now globally recognised within the Neonatal Field.... One thing Miracle Babies truly understands is that admission to a NICU or SCN can be daunting, frightening and shocking. The development of family support services and resources was crucial in allowing families to feel supported and empowered with knowledge during an often difficult and confusing journey. With more and more families affected each year, the need for support is greater than ever. Unfortunately, today there just isnt support available for all families. Studies have shown that parents who do go through the experience of having a baby born premature or sick are more likely to experience clinically significant degrees of psychological distress. - Kylie Pussell. The creation of our NICU Survival Pack for families admitted into participating hospitals equips parents with vital tools and resources as they try and navigate this strange, high tech universe. Included in the NICU Survival Packs is our own book titled Nurture, developed to guide parents and caregivers through their hospital journey with a premature or sick newborn. I'm so proud of 'Nurture' and the hope and encouragement it offers families, that wasn't around when my boys were born. Naomi Rohr, Co-Founder. Because every journey is different the 128-page book was designed to be an in-depth and comprehensive source of information, touching on issues and concerns that often affect families dealing with the birth of a premature or sick newborn. It covers many aspects and concerns shared by families to give readers a better understanding of neonatal care in an easily readable way. Who better to produce such a guide, providing so much frank, valuable and practical advice, than those who have been through it all themselves? Who better to understand what it must be like, than the mothers, fathers and families of premature and sick infants? A/Professor Ross Haslam Chairman, Australian and New Zealand Neonatal Network. Another significant step forward in providing much needed emotional support for families was the introduction of our 24hr 7 days a week family helpline NurtureLine. Miracle Babies Foundation NurtureLine is a free family support helpline catering for families with a threatened pregnancy, the hospital journey with a baby currently in NICU/SCN, the transition to home and onwards. 20.01.2022 Miracle Mum Tianna, shares her son Kaiden's story. "Kaiden was born at 27 weeks. 11 days before Kaiden’s birth I ended up in the emergency department. The doctors sent me home with antibiotics, but I went home without knowing my waters had actually broken - so I had 11 days without fluid. Early on the 25th of April 2020, I was taken to the hospital with labour pains. I was then sent to Perth’s King Edward Memorial hospital by Royal Flying Doctor. I arrived there at 7:27pm and... had a check over at 9:30pm. Kaiden was born shortly after weighing 1001grams. I only got to see him briefly and then he went with the doctors and I was taken to surgery to remove the placenta. Kaiden spent two and a half months on CPAP and then moved to high flow which he was on for three and a half weeks. He was then moved to Perth Children Hospital with oxygen and tube feeding. Three weeks before discharge he was on bottle feeding. Kaiden finally came home on the 17th July, weighing 2027g. Kaiden is a miracle baby. We all love and adore him. Thanks to the nurses and doctors for everything they did to keep Kaiden here with me today. His three brothers are so loving and love to help me with him." 20.01.2022 Miracle Mum, Bailey was 16 years old when she welcomed little Savannah into the world. She shares the story of how she had to balance the shock of becoming a mum and the fear of not knowing if her baby would survive. "I was pregnant with my first baby, I was 16 years old and at the time I was 30 weeks & 4 days pregnant. I went to the gynaecologist and she asked if I was having contractions & explained it to me as period pain. I had never had period pain so I said no. She did ...some tests and they were sent away. That day my mum ended up going to the shops and bought 00000 jumpsuits. Two days later I was in a lot of pain from belly tightening, but I didnt want to scare my mum so I didnt say anything. Three days after, I could barely walk. The tightening was a few minutes apart. The next morning I got my mum and partner to take me to the local hospital (which stopped accepting births a year before I had her). We arrived at 7.45am, my labour was very fast and I had no pain relief. My baby was born at 9.11am, 9 weeks premature, breathing fine and crying. I was in so much shock, I couldnt believe I had just become a mum and I wasnt sure if she would survive. I had never heard of premature babies before and I didnt know how her life would turn out. We were transferred by Royal Flying Doctors service to Adelaide, South Australia which was 500kms away. She spent six and a half weeks in Flinders medial centre. She was the perfect baby, slept 12 hours every night. Shes now turning 10 and besides having glasses there's no other medical issues. Shes doing well at school and is at bench mark for her age. I'm so proud of the young lady shes becoming." 19.01.2022 Miracle Mum, Melissa shares Ashlyn's story. "My husband and I have a large blended family and we were expecting twins (baby 9&10) for the family in 2020. The pregnancy was smooth sailing with no complications until I went into spontaneous labour at 19+5 weeks. I was cooking dinner when I felt some pressure and a really big tightening which doubled me over. 18.01.2022 Miracle Mum, Natalie shares the story of how she discovered something was terribly wrong with her son Byron. "Byron was born on his due date weighing a healthy 7lb 3oz. I had a fabulous pregnancy and gave birth naturally at 10.01pm with no problems. Byron slept like a trooper that night as well as all day Saturday, however, I was getting concerned by Saturday afternoon as Byron had no interest in feeds & was presenting with ‘doll’ like behaviours. The nurses told me it was no...thing to be concerned about. Sunday morning came round and Byron was still uninterested in feeds and still had not shed a tear. Around 10am that morning he vomited green bile and I knew something was terribly wrong. Everything moved very quickly from there... Byron was taken into special care & he saw specialists, had xrays and aspirates were also taken. John Hunter Hospital were contacted & they told us we had to get on a helicopter as they suspect twisted bowel. When we arrived in JHH everything was go... Byron was taken into radiology & luckily no twisted bowel which left Dr.Kumar with the thought of two possibilities...small left colon syndrome which would fix itself or Hirschsprung Disease. Dr Kumar suspected it was more likely to be small left colon syndrome. Byron was having bowel washouts twice daily and after about 3 days Dr Kumar wanted to do a biopsy as he then believed Byron had Hirschsprung Disease; a Disease I never had heard of or knew anything about. Biopsy came back positive & at 10 days young Byron went in to surgery to test how far along his ganglion cells weren’t working. We were told it would be a 4hr surgery, and at 4hrs we received a phone call to say that Byron was still in surgery & so far it was confirmed there were no functioning cells on his large intestine. After 8.5hrs we got a phone call to say that Byron was out of surgery and we were very lucky to have him here with us. If there were no functioning cells on his small intestine Byron may not be with us. Byron had an ileostomy formed and recently had his pull through surgery. He is recovering well & we have his surgeons to thank for that. We are so grateful for his amazing surgeons and doctors because without them he wouldn’t be with us...Byron really is our miracle baby." 17.01.2022 Miracle Mum, Katie shares her story of baby Zachary's eagerness to join the family. "Zachary was born at 32 weeks. He had growth restrictions and sat on the cord. Being eager to enter the world early he was delivered via emergency c-section. He was later airlifted to NICU Canberra, where he was on the CPAP machine for five days and in hospital for two months total. Those two months were filled with bradycardias, caffeine, nutrition transfusions, and nasal feeding tubes. It wa...s incredibly stressful and we bonded with other parents who had special care babies. They were the main people, besides the nurses, we got to talk to. He’s always been small for his age but is finally catching up! In two months my little boy is turning five and starting big school next year!" To read the full story, visit: https://www.miraclebabies.org.au/content/zachary/gjm4rp WANT TO SHARE YOUR STORY TOO? 17.01.2022 Today is Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day. This is a day to remember miscarriage, stillbirth, and infant loss. A day where families across the globe are asked to light a candle in memory of their baby whose life was too short. Many believe that the lit candle represents hope in the dark and a resistance against the shadows of our own minds. Miracle Mum, Nicole will light a candle for her little girl Isla. Nicole’s twin girls Isla and Eloise were born at 29 weeks. Unfor...tunately Isla needed heart surgery and was flown interstate for the operation. The surgery went well, but sadly, Isla contracted sepsis after the operation and passed away in her mother’s arms. Nicole shares her experience of great loss to honour Isla’s memory and support other families going through their own grief. I am so sorry Isla. Sorry we couldn’t do more for you. Sorry we couldn’t show you the amazing, sometimes cruel world in which we live. You will always be with us. Your sister will experience all of this and you will be there with her every step. Mummy and daddy love you so much. You will be missed dearly but never forgotten. You taught us so much in your short life, taught us to fight, to have hope when all is lost and renewed our faith. Bringing awareness to my girls' journey has been so important to me as it not only helps others going through a similar situation, but it also validates both of them as my children and as an important part of our family. No matter how short the time was that we were gifted with our precious Isla, she bought so much joy to all of our family and continues to be included in our daily lives.' If everyone was to light a candle at 7pm (local time) and leave it burning for an hour there will be a continuous wave of light across the world for 24hrs. Share your lit candles below. "It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness." - Eleanor Roosevelt Purchase a candle to honour the memory of those gone too soon: https://miraclebabies.org.au//pregnancy-in/c-24/c-95/p-371 May you always see the hope through that flicker of light. #pregnancyandinfancyloss #miraclebabies #prematurebabies #sicknewborns #inourheartsforever Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness

16.01.2022 *'15 Years of Nurturing' Highlight* Wow, what amazing support and a great memory! We are so thankful for the incredible amount of work that the Random Acts of Kindness team put in to help improve and create a suitable space for our Head Office team in 2009. In June 2009, the team at Miracle Babies were given a big surprise by the Channel 9 TV program, Random Acts of Kindness, hosted by our now ambassador Scotty Cam. The Miracle Babies team was given a wonderful night out in ...Sydney, whilst unknown to them, the Random Acts team were remodelling Miracle Babies Head Office. The team received brand new furniture, a new boardroom, computers, laptops and a call centre telephone system. This gave Miracle Babies the tools and exposure needed to move from a local charity to a national Foundation very quickly. In commemoration and celebration of our '15 Years of Nurturing' milestone, we are sharing 15 of the biggest highlights from the last 15 years, read more and help us continue to support more families with a premature or sick newborn for years to come: https://www.miraclebabies.org.au//a/15-years-of-nurturing/ #RandomActsofKindness #Channel9 #miraclebabies #HeadOffice #support #prematurebabies #sicknewborns #nicu #team #renovation

15.01.2022 Payton was and still is the light of our lives and her legacy is remembered by so many. She touched a lot of people's hearts in such a short time and she is remembered as a strong and determined little girl who will never be forgotten. Today is Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day. This is a day to remember miscarriage, stillbirth, and infant loss. Miracle Dad Brett shares his story of welcoming twins into the world at 23 weeks and facing a heart-breaking journey.... "At just 23+4 weeks on the 17th of June our twin babies were born. Rohan was 600 grams and Payton 488 grams, both measuring 21cm. Rohan spent six months in hospital and fought a very hard fight with so many ups and downs. He was ventilated for six weeks and then between Bi-pap (Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure), C-pap, High-flow and eventually on Low-flow which we went home on until around 18 months. Rohan has endured several surgeries so far and continues to visit an opthomoligist to which we travel hours to see. He also sees therapists every month to help him along in his journey, whom we are very thankful for. Rohan has had a long journey so far. His biggest struggle is being legally blind due to his oxygen levels changing so frequently and his eyes being starved of oxygen for such a long time, but Rohan is a healthy little boy with a great life ahead of him. His sister Payton battled a long hard fight for four weeks and her fighting spirit lives on in her brothers now. Payton was and still is the light of our lives and her legacy is already remembered by so many. She touched a lot of people’s hearts in such a short time and she is remembered as a strong and determined little girl who will never be forgotten. We are very thankful to the Nepean hospital NICU unit for putting their hearts and souls into their jobs each day to save these babies that are born so early." 15.01.2022 Do you remember this night? Reflecting on the last 15 years, in celebration of '15 Years of Nurturing' for Miracle Babies, we're sharing our second highlight - The First Miracle Babies Ball and Launch, held in 2006, only shortly after Miracle Babies was initiated. To introduce ourselves to the community, Miracle Babies Foundation threw a launch event, the first of what would be many major events for this group of passionate mums. The inaugural ball would become an annual cen...trepiece for our organisation for years to come. Our first major event for Miracle Babies was our launch night at Liverpool Catholic Club. The room was filled with over 200 of our closest family and friends, hospital staff and medical professionals that had cared for our babies, all there supporting our vision. It was a truly special night and really highlighted the need for the work we were doing. Community support for us was amazing from the very start! Kylie Pussell. 14.01.2022 As a parent or caregiver, it is hard to watch your baby go through medical tests and procedures that may cause them pain. Parents and families play an important role in comforting babies during painful procedures but are often unaware of these strategies and their positive effects in reducing pain. The University of Melbourne’s 'Be Sweet to Babies' research team collaborated with the Miracle Babies Foundation to research family-led strategies for babies' pain treatment, inclu...ding breastfeeding, holding babies skin-to-skin, and using sugar water during blood collection. 13.01.2022 What started as a way to support other families going through the NICU (Newborn Intensive Care Unit) and SCN (Special Care Nursery) journey by a group of local mums, has since become Australias leading organisation supporting premature and sick newborns, their families and the hospitals that care for them. Miracle Babies formed when my miracle babies were so young. I was at my most vulnerable after having three premature babies and several losses, and the connection with ot...her families was my lifeline. It is such an honour to acknowledge my miracle babies, my three with me here today and growing well, and also those in my heart forever by being able to support other families through their own traumatic experience and giving back to the hospitals that saved my babies lives." 13.01.2022 Survival of babies born before 28 weeks has increased significantly over the past 25 years. "The scariest thing is survival, is my baby going to survive?" shares Miracle Babies Founder, Melinda Cruz https://www.facebook.com/ACurrentAffair9/videos/2632186013711578

12.01.2022 Miracle Mum, Ashlee suffered through severe nausea and vomiting during her pregnancy. She shares the story of how it threatened to bring her baby into the world much earlier than planned. "For me, pregnancy didn't go well with my body. When I found out I was pregnant I was scared as I had trauma from my previous pregnancy after suffering badly from hyperemesis gravidarum (severe nausea and vomiting). This time things took turns in all sorts of directions. I was admitted to ho...spital for days at a time. Hyperemesis gravidarum took a big toll on my body and I lost all my weight. I ended up in the emergency department one last time before being transferred to a better hospital with a NICU on stand by for me to have bubba taken out at 27 weeks due to her very small size and the placenta not working well. However, luckily we were eventually allowed to go back home for Christmas. The doctors were worried about me needing to travel for 3 hours each week for scans to keep an eye on bub. But it was essential to make sure the placenta was still working well enough for bub to stay in. By the time I had reached 34 weeks Miss Olivia decided she no longer wanted to be inside and made her way into the world weighing a tiny 1460g. Happily, she didn't need to be transferred and from then on she had a really good run. She's now a tiny but perfectly happy baby." 12.01.2022 In celebration of 15 years of providing vital support to and nurturing families with a premature or sick newborn, we're reflecting on 15 highlights and special milestones in our history, starting with the biggest and most significant of all: The birth of Miracle Babies! On Sunday July 24th 2005, after 114 days we walked out of Liverpool NICU with our second born, 25 weeker Eli. Just four days later Eli and I returned to the hospital to meet other mums of NICU babies. This be...came the very first meeting for Miracle Babies. Naomi Rohr, Miracle Babies Co-Founder. Launched in 2005 by Melinda Cruz and with the help of Liverpool Hospital's NICU, Miracle Babies Foundation was formed by a group of mothers of premature and sick newborns. I flash back to 2005 and initiating the thought of some way to feel more connected and to help other families of premature babies. I never, ever had any concept of not only what Miracle Babies is today but also what it could be. I was simply a mum, devastated by my birth experiences and the way my children came into the world who wanted, no, needed to stay connected to other miracle mothers to help me be okay and to give back to the hospital who gave me my beautiful babies to take home, turning us into a family. From that very first time when I approached the hospital with my idea, my life again changed. I was introduced to the most incredible and strong women I have ever met who listened to my thoughts and vision and with everything they had made it their own. All women with different journeys, but all bonded together by a path we never ever would have chosen. I am so honoured by all of them, Melinda Cruz. All bonded together by their NICU experiences, they shared the same common desire of wanting to support other families of miracle babies and give back to the wonderful hospitals that care for them. Together, Miracle Babies and Liverpool Hospital worked on an in-hospital parent support program, allowing current NICU families the opportunity to speak to past parents and on expanding the already running, but resource limited, premmie playgroup to reach even more NICU families. 11.01.2022 After being told to go on bed red rest and spending a week in hospital at 19 weeks, Miracle parents, Elarny and Anthony prepared themselves for what they were told would be a high risk pregnancy. Though still not prepared for the journey that awaited, Elarny had to make the trip to Sydney once a week for scans and monitoring of their Twin Babies twin-to-twin-Transfusion-Syndrome (TTTS) and a shortened Cervix. One morning at 23 weeks and 6 days gestation, Elarny awoke to sever...e cramping pains, it was established at Canberra hospital that her twins had transitioned into stage two of the TTTS. After an attempt of extracting some amniotic fluid, she was flown to Randwick and at 24 weeks + 1 day Elarny went into early labour to deliver her twin baby girls. She delivered both of her girls by Emergency C Section, both weighing just 625g, the exact same birth weight at the doctors amazement. Both girls spent two and a half months in the NICU at Randwick before transferring to Canberra, and spent the remainder of their days in SCN. They were discharged one day after their due date and now live out a health normal childhood as three year old toddlers with mum and dad. 09.01.2022 Miracle Mum, Diana never thought she would need to undergo surgery while pregnant. The difficult pregnancy and the trauma of the NICU journey was a lot for her to deal with. Despite the tough times, she has two happy baby girls and has decided to share her story of welcoming them into the world. "Almost 18 months after their arrival my Identical Twin girls are like regular little babies, and by little, I mean little! Adrian Joy was born at 1099g and Evie Mila was born at 788g.... They were delivered at 30 weeks and 1 day after an extremely difficult pregnancy. At about 16 weeks it was confirmed that I had Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome. In a nutshell, that meant only one placenta had formed, there was an unequal share of blood and Evie wasn’t receiving enough to grow. If we didn’t go down the path of surgery on the placenta, there was only a 10% chance of survival for both babies. The surgery worked, but left other complications where Adrian then needed blood transfusions. Being pregnant can be worrying enough without complications but I never imagined that I would need to undergo surgery and procedures during mine. Surgery and pregnancy, a very scary mix! Both girls struggled while I was pregnant, but Evie was at most risk because she was growing so slowly, and she only had a 20% chance of surviving. Evie spent almost 3 months in NICU / Special Care Nursery and was very sick throughout that time. Adrian spent 7 weeks with a fairly straight forward run. It has taken me over 12 months to finally feel like a mother to my girls and feel like myself again. All the regular things that come with babies are tough, and I have days where I want to pull my hair out! But I am learning each day how to manage my anxiety, especially after my traumatic time. I am loving time with my girls who laugh and play so much. Most days I still look at them and can’t believe they are here, they’re strength and energy just amazes me." 09.01.2022 Being the mother of a premmie baby has taught Miracle Mum, Samantha to be patient and to believe in miracles. She shares her story to remind people how amazing these tiny humans can be. "I always had a feeling that this little man wouldn't make his 37 week induction date. I walked into the hospital to get his movement checked as he had been super quiet that day and as I'm sitting there waiting for the movement to start I could feel this wet liquidy sensation - my waters had b...roken with good timing being in the hospital! It was all a blur as I was hooked up to drips and monitors, doctors and nurses came in and out explaining everything and trying to answer my million questions. My biggest fear was long term issues due to my bub being a preemie. Alaric was born a few hours later, twisted in his umbilical cord and a foot wedged up at his head. He was a good size at 2.2kg, and he needed just a few hours on CPAP before he was determined to breathe unassisted. In his first week we had 2 rounds of phototherapy for jaundice and dropped down to just under 2kg. But from there he turned a corner and begun to gain weight and learned to breastfeed and maintain his own body temperature. We moved to a hospital closer to home at 10 days old and from there we continued to grow and thrive despite a few small setbacks. Alaric has shown me the meaning of strength and what it means to be a fighter. The day they told me I could bring him home at 35+3 weeks I cried for 20 minutes overwhelmed by the feeling of 'what do I do now?'. How do I look after something so small without the amazing nurses and doctors there double checking and assuring me it's all normal?" 08.01.2022 Miracle Mum, Kristal shares Matthew's story. "Matthew was born in the middle of a worldwide pandemic, in the back of an ambulance on the side of road at 33 weeks. Labour was very spontaneous; my waters started to leak in the early hours of the morning. My partner got our 2-year-old up and ready and we went to the Innisfail hospital. I was checked and told that bub will most likely be born within 48 hours and I'd have to be transferred to Cairns Base Hospital. I was given ster...iods for Matthew's lungs and medication to try and stop the labour. Due to COVID-19 restritions our 2-year-old wasn't able to be at the hospital nor was he allowed to visit or meet his brother in the SCN. My partner left to take our 2-year-old to his grandparents which was an hours drive away. I was loaded up into an ambulance to go to Cairns. My contractions started getting closer and more intense; not even 11kms out of Innisfail I felt the urge to push. The driver pulled over and within 15 minutes Matthew was born. Thankfully he was breathing on his own; we then raced to Cairns. Matthew was taken straight away to be put into an isolate as his body temp was extremely low. He spent 26 days in the SCN, mainly just growing and learning to feed. We had a few little set backs but our little man was a little warrior. I can honestly say the SCN nurses and doctors were amazing. We had so many incredible and talented people caring for our baby. Leaving the hospital without our son was probably the hardest experience - one which still brings tears to my eyes. Though it was heartbreaking, through all the trials and tribulations of bringing our son into this world AND THEN home, I have nothing but gushing positivity for the team who cared for him when I couldn’t. My family is forever grateful for their hard work, dedication and compassion. It’s an experience I couldn’t have gone through without their support." 06.01.2022 Miracle Mum, Stephanie shares her story of welcoming little Matila into the world at 29 weeks. "Matilda was born at 29 weeks weighing 990grams due to IUGR (Intrauterine Growth Restriction) and pre-eclampsia in Tasmania whilst we were visiting family after being married. We lived in Western Australian, however, after a hospitalisation at 25 weeks I was advised not to fly because a baby was going to happen anytime, that was stretched out by four stressful weeks which involved a...ppointments every second day and two more hospital trips before the final emergency Caesarean at 29 weeks. Unfortunately Dad missed the birth due to being back at work in Western Australia and not having enough time to get back after pre-eclampsia kicked in. We did 78 days in NICU/SCN before being allowed to leave the hospital. However, we didn't get to go home to Western Australia until Matilda was 5 months old. She is now a thriving 2 year old who loves everything: dance, Frozen and being outside." 05.01.2022 Miracle Mum Mary, shares how the NICU rollercoaster was the scariest time of her life. "Our miracle baby, Quinton was born on April 25 at 27 weeks via emergency C-section due to low fetal heart rate and placental abruption. He came into this world weighing just 1.08kg and measured 37.8cm long. Each day there were the ups and downs of the NICU rollercoaster - not knowing if he was going to make it. It was indeed the scariest time of our life. There were times that his nurses d...id try to resuscitate him and we even witnessed his monitor almost in flat line. He fought for his life and luckily he made it! Quinton experienced many of the common complications associated with extreme prematurity including Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS), Apnea, Patent Ductus Arteriosis (PDA), jaundice and intraventricular hemorrhage. He was in CPAP (breathing support) for 45 days. Quinton has come a long way and made unbelievable progress. After 77 days staycation, he graduated the NICU with no health complications and his development is fully on track. We are very grateful to GOD almighty, you never fail us. Our strong faith eased out all our anxieties. The power of God's glory made our little boy stronger to fight his battle in NICU. We would like to thank all the wonderful staff in the NICU, his Neonatologists, Pediatrician, Dietitians, Occupational and Respiratory Therapists and the loving touches of 100+ nurses who took care of him 24/7. You guys are our heroes! I'm also so thankful for advanced medical technology - our baby is now doing incredibly well." 05.01.2022 **NICU/SCN Team Highlight** During November, NICU Awareness Month, we are recognising some of the wonderful NICU and Special Care teams that care for premature and sick newborns. Meet Emily Douglass, Liverpool NICU, Registered Nurse.... Hear from Emily: What brought you to this role? I didn’t even know this world existed before my nursing career! I did a 6 month rotation in Campbelltown SCN when I first started and never wanted to leave. What do you love about this role? There are too many things to list. I am honoured to be there looking after baby’s in their first minutes/hours of life, and watching their journey. I love celebrating their weight gains, first bottles, cuddles and baths, and discharging them home. What challenges are within your role? It can be a very emotional job with lots of ups and downs. Sometimes your days off are wondering about a baby’s progress or if you could have done something more/different on your shift. Thank you Emily for all that you do for vulnerable newborns and their families. #Miraclebabies #prematurebabies #NICU #SCN #NICUAwarenessMonth #WorldPrematurityDay

05.01.2022 Miracle Mum, Shania shares her daughter Navaeh's story. "I was pregnant with fraternal twins at a young age. My waters broke when I was 24+2 days gestation. The hospital couldn't do anything to stop the labor. I was already fully dialated and had to have an emergency cesarean. They ended up calling flight for life and delivering my daughters. They were born weighing 524g and 538g at birth. They were transferred immediately by ambulance to a hospital that had the equipment to ...take care of premature babies. My daughters were really sick. They told me it was going to be a roller coaster. One of my daughters ended up dying two days after birth from internal bleeding in her lungs. My other daughter fought from day one. She ended up having PDA (patent ductus arteriosus) ligation, Severe NEC (necrotizing enterocolitis), Resection of the bowel, x2 ROP (Retinopathy of prematurity) Lasor Eye Surgery, in the first six months of her life. She was finally discharged after a long 6 months in the NICU. Navaeh ended up having to have a few more surgeries in regards to her stomach issues. However, she has been doing therapy since six months old. She turned nine in October. She is my miracle baby. If she can go through all those things and fight for her life as an innocent baby, I know I can do so much more. I love you Navaeh Marie." 04.01.2022 Such a fun night this was! Our fourth highlight from the last 15 years - The Miracle Babies Ball (which was a sell out!) in 2009. Our Annual Ball had been growing for a few years and becoming a real highlight in the calendar for our supporters and local community in the Sydney South West. Our largest ball was over 600 guests at the Liverpool Catholic Club and the atmosphere was electric. We all have so many wonderful memories from this night, singing and dancing with Doc N...eeson and our other Ambassadors; all working together to raise funds for Miracle Babies and supporting more families. Kylie Pussell. Thank you to everybody who supported this wonderful event, and for the continued support of the community in fundraising events and initiatives such as this. Your support helps us continue to expand our reach to provide vital support to more of the 48,000 families impacted across Australia each year. 04.01.2022 *'15 Years of Nurturing' Highlight* Going National Becoming a Foundation and gaining a Board of Directors in 2009. As our exposure grew and the demand for services increased, Miracle Babies resolved to grow as a not-for-profit organisation and officially become a Foundation and bring on a Board of Directors to help expand our reach. Included in this was asking the former NSW Premier, Morris Iemma to come onboard as our Chairman.... If we chose not to grow and stay small and local, it meant wed have to say no to other parents in need. We knew what it was like to go through it and not to have help, and we didnt want anyone else to be left out. Melinda Cruz. It turned out to be the right path for us and enabled us to support more families and boost our reach to become Australias leading not-for-profit organisation supporting premature and sick newborns, their families and the hospitals that care for them. In commemoration and celebration of our '15 Years of Nurturing' milestone, we are sharing 15 of the biggest highlights from the last 15 years, read more and help us continue to support more families with a premature or sick newborn for years to come: https://www.miraclebabies.org.au//a/15-years-of-nurturing/ #miraclebabies #prematurebabies #sicknewborns #nicu #support #notforprofit #families

03.01.2022 In honour of Grandparents Day, 25th October, we're asking for your support to make a difference to the special grandparents of our miracles. Can your School or Child Care Centre run a donation drive to help raise funds or collect new, children's storybooks to provide to families in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)? The experience of a baby being born not as expected can be life-changing and it affects the entire family, not just the parents. Grandparents are often just... as affected as the parents, riding the emotions, but removed from the situation, sometimes waiting weeks or months to meet or hold their grandchild. The storybooks will be included in our new Grandparents resources which will be inserted into our NICU Survival Packs, supporting our important resources and tools for families coping with having a baby currently in NICU or SCN. For grandparents, reading to their grandchild can help bonding without physical touch (premature and sick newborns are highly vulnerable) and can improve their mental wellbeing. Reading to babies in the NICU can also help reduce stress for the baby and aid development (with premature babies at risk of developmental delays). To arrange a delivery to our South-West Sydney Head Office, contact [email protected] or send us a PM. #miraclebabies #proudgrandparentsproject #NICU #prematurebabies #sicknewborns #SCN

02.01.2022 **More NICU/SCN Team Highlights** Thank you to the amazing NICU and Special Care staff for all that you do for premature and sick newborns and their families. Don't forget to leave your message of appreciation for your Hospital's team, for the care of your baby or babies, in honour of Thank U NICU Day tomorrow, 27th November. Leave your messages here: https://www.miraclebabies.org.au//thank-u-nicu-day-/gjyhvs Hear from Sara Wilson, Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE), Neonatal In...tensive Care Unit (NICU), Liverpool Hospital. What brought you to this role?: Since becoming a midwife in 1988 I became fascinated by birth itself, also the adaptation process of the foetus to life on the outside world and how perfectly smooth the process is most of the time. But, slowly I became more interested in when the birthing process doesn’t go so smoothly and what could I do help the little ones. This lead me to continue my studies into Neonatal Intensive care at RPA Hospital and later on in Adult education. Throughout my career I have worked in many NICUs here in Australia and overseas, on my return I applied and was successful transitioning to the role of CNE in Liverpool NICU. What do you love about this role? I love to provide education to new graduates and current staff in the NICU. I enjoy watching staff develop their skills and transition from being a novice NICU nurse to a proficient competent nurse and provide safe quality care to our little patients and their families. What challenges are within your role? The conflicting demands of the role, from clinician to support person, to team leader and there are never enough hours of the day complete the paperwork. Other comment? It’s all worthwhile when you see the little ones graduate from our unit and go home with their families. Thank you Sara! #miraclebabies #NICU #SCN #ThankUNICU #ThankU #prematurebabies #sicknewborns #NICUAwarenessMonth

02.01.2022 "I spent World Prematurity Day reflecting on our last six years, since Summer blessed us with her presence. There is something I have never spoken about to anyone except my hubby and a small number of people I have met along the way, who I felt needed my experience to help them cope with theirs. However, I sit back now and think by saying nothing openly how am I helping the ones suffering silently like we did?. The unspoken ‘something’ is POST TRAUMATIC SHOCK/TRAUMA. It hi...ts people in different ways, and I honestly don’t think that anyone can go through a life shattering experience and not walk away with trauma and the side effects that comes with trauma..." During this year’s November NICU Awareness Month, Miracle Mum Kylie has reflected on her experiences as a mum of a premature baby and has opened up about an often hidden issue. 01.01.2022 Today is National Grandparents Day and we would like to recognise and celebrate the Grandparents of our miracles and the special role they play. When a baby is born unexpectedly, Grandparents are one of the most important support networks for the family. Often though, Grandparents can ride the emotions alongside the family but are removed from the situation, leading to feelings of anxiety, fear, helplessness and isolation, even more so with tighter restrictions in the NICU. T...o further support grandparents in their own journey and to help them cope through this challenging experience themselves, we are excited to announce our new grandparents resources. From this week, Miracle Babies NICU Survival Packs distributed to hospitals will include our new grandparents resources, with thanks to the recently launched 'Proud Grandparents Project'. Thank you to all who have supported this project so far. 01.01.2022 "The first 6 months at home felt like a war zone; I battled depression and tried to get back on track with everything that was thrown at our family." During Women's Health Week (7-11 Sept) we want to acknowledge the mental and emotional impact navigating the NICU journey can have on mothers. This week is a great reminder to take time out to check in on your mental health and seek help if you think you need it.
