It's normal for your toddler to fight sleep because there's too much going on! From a developmental standpoint, being contrary and battling the old routines of babyhood is part of the deal.... Is the bedtime a battle at your home If you thought baby bedtime battles were bad, youre in for a shock. Toddlers are masters of negotiation (one more book, one more kiss, one more song, one more cup of water etc) and could write a series of bestselling books on how to delay bedtime! My toddler is the same, this is the nature of toddler from requesting another drink and begging another story. They have the skills necessary to set bedtime back by atleast half an hour. Here are my top tips to prevent toddler bedtime battles: Bedtime routine A bedtime routine can help your toddler to feel safe and relaxed. The routine doesnt need to be a strict list of things that must be ticked off each and every day, but should be quite similar from one day to the next. Get the timing right Timing is everything when it comes to bedtime. Attempt it too early and your toddler is undertired for bed, and attempt it too late and youre likely to have an overtired toddler that can win awards for fighting sleep. Offer choices Many of the battles you have with your toddler probably come down to control. Your toddler has a strong sense of self, but isnt yet independent enough to take control of all areas of his life. Wind down rituals with time warnings Give your toddler plenty of notice so that he knows the bedtime is comings then you can start the wind down rituals in same order. Be consistent and you will find that they will fight lesser each day. Keep things calm the hour before bedtime This will send the signal to their brain that it is quiet time and approaching bedtime. You can dim the lights, off all the electronics, avoid screen time and do some quite activities in the bedroom. Avoid certain foods before bedtime Consuming caffeine could be keeping your toddle awake, so try cutting out chocolate in the afternoon to see if that helps. Sugar (and processed grains which have the same effect on blood sugar levels) can also interfere with your toddlers sleep pattern, so try to avoid dessert and other sugary foods at dinnertime. 20.01.2022 How to adjust daylight savings with baby or toddler Moving the clock forward is something that always worried parents what to do with babys or toddlers sleep routine. It can take them a little longer to get into the swing of things.... I understand the confusion of adjusting your little mircales sleep. Highly recommended to get ready a week in advance, you may have more chance of your baby not waking very early in the morning filling the time change. Here are the simple quick tips for adapting to the time changes: Assuming you have a 7am start of the day & 7pm bedtime 1Monday & 2Tuesday: Start your day 15 minutes earlier than usual wake time, 6:45am that including moving your nap, eating time 15 minutes earlier. Aim for bedtime 15 minutes earlier than usual ,6:45pm 3Wednesday & 4Thursday Start your day another 15 minutes earlier, 6:30am wake time (which means your babys daily routine has shifted 30 minutes earlier than current routine), aim for bedtime 6:30pm 5Friday & 6Saturday Shift your babys routine early by another 15 minutes, 6:15am wake time (which means your babys daily routine has shifted 45 minutes earlier than current routine), aim for bedtime 6:15pm Change your phone, clock wind forward an hour before you go to bed on Saturday night. 7Sunday Wake your baby at 7am (new time), then you are back to usual routine and 7pm bedtime. An important part of establishing good sleeping habits is the sleep environment.... An ideal sleep environment helps cultivate a good sleeper, and good sleepers are adaptable. Why does a dark room make such a difference The fact is that babies find the dark extremely comforting and it will be a lot easier for your baby to fall asleep and stay asleep longer in a dark room. One big source of stimulation is light, but luckily it's also something that we can control especially at sleep times. Especially if your baby is over 2 months old as the dark promotes the release of sleep hormone,melatonin which is important to your baby settling. Pay attention to any sources of light that can come into the room. This can range from LED lights coming off baby monitors, sunlight coming through curtains, or hall light coming under the door Keep all screens out of the babys room. This means no iPads, TVs, or smart phones. The light that is emitted from these screens stimulate the babys brains. By blocking out this stimulation when our babies are trying to sleep, we are making it easier for them to fall asleep and to stay asleep as all babies will wake at the 45 minute mark for naps, and a dark room can help promote the transition into that next sleep cycle. Especially if you are struggling with naps, experiment with getting baby's room darker - sometimes this in of itself can help encourage more quality daytime sleep. Most of these happen when toddlers are overtired or undertired. Keeping your toddler on a regular sleep routine may help prevent many of these problems.... What is Nightmares Nightmares are experienced when toddler awaken from vivid dreams with intense feelings of fear or dread. Most of the time the toddler can recall the content of the dreams with a fair degree of detail. Nightmares most often later at night during REM sleep where dreaming is most prevalent. What to do with nightmares Go to your child as quickly as possible. Assure your toddler that you are there and will not let anything harm her. Encourage her to tell you what happened in the dream. Remind her that dreams are not real. Allow her to keep a light on if it makes her feel better. Once your child is ready, encourage her to go back to sleep. What is Night Terrors Night terrors are partial arousals from sleep in which a child may shout, thrash about, kick, or scream as if in an intense panic. During a night terror the toddler may be sitting bolt-upright in bed with eyes wide open, but will not likely notice the presence of their parents. Night terrors can cause confusion and the child is most likely unaware of the presence of a parent in the room. Night terrors occur during non-rapid eye movement sleep, during the short wave period of sleep. They often occur in the first few hours of sleep before REM sleep occurs. Night terror episodes often last between 10-30 minutes. After a night terror episode the child often lays back down and falls to sleep without needing to be consoled. What to do with night terrors Stay calm. Night terrors are often more frightening for the parent than the child. Do not try to wake your child. Make sure your child cannot hurt himself. If he tries to get out of bed, gently restrain him. Remember, after a short time your child will probably relax and sleep quietly again. If your child has night terrors, be sure to tell babysitters what they are and what to do. How do you stop night terrors in your toddler?

Dummy is just like the icing on the cake for newborns, it helps to sooth little miracle and prevent SIDS especially it is a life saver for premature babies and twins/ triplets. The main advantage of babies having dummies is that they can satisfy their sucking instincts if theyre not breastfed. Using dummies can calm babies and help them to fall asleep. Dummies can also be used to sooth babies at other times.... If you decide to stop using dummies with your baby at three months, their memory of relying on this as a soothing mechanism will fade very quickly. But, if you choose to continue using dummies you should prepare yourself for what could be a bumpy ride when you attempt to take it away between six months and a year and your child is more reliant on it. What age should you stop using a dummy? The AAP recommends to start weaning at 6 months and the AAPD recommends to wean by 3 years old. Ditching dummy is only necessary if it is a problem of causing more night waking where you need to get up replace into your babys mouth over and over again which resulting this become a negative sleep prop 4-6 months is the golden time to teach your baby to ditch dummy cold turkey and it only takes 2-3 days If you decided to keep the dummy, you need to teach your baby to find and replace it themselves independently around 8-9 months Then this carry on till 2.5-3 years old where you can ditch the dummy cold turkey There are 2 ways to wean dummy 1. Cold Turkey (around 3-6 months) 2. Gradual Weaning for toddler Why Cold Turkey Method It is because "out of sight, out of mind" Baby is a fast learner, you will see the difference in 2-3 days if you keep up the consistency No confusion for your child when they can and cannot use the dummy Your child will forget about the dummy and find other ways to self settles at sleep. Sleepless nights make being a super-mum so hard. Every baby has their own unique sleep pattern, and some babies are good sleepers while others will wake up multiple times wanting to feed through the night.... 10.01.2022 How do I fix my babys early wakes In the first few sleep-deprived months of your babys life, you were probably pretty fixated on getting your baby to sleep through the night so that the whole house wasnt awake at 2 a.m. (or worse, every hour on the hour). Whether your early-riser is a wee babe or a great big toddler, one thing is certain: early waking is rough! ... The timing of your baby or toddlers morning wake-up sets the tone for the rest of the day, AND it sets the pace for the days sleep and feeding schedule. If your baby or toddler is waking up before 6AM, the chances are its due to one of the four most common reasons for early rising: A late bedtime Nap deprivation Staying awake too long between the afternoon nap and bedtime Going to bed in overtired state Here are my top tips to resolve early wakes: Bring bedtime early to compensate the babys overtiredness. When you put your baby to bed in overtired state, it actually makes it harder for the little to fall asleep and stay asleep. Make sure they have the age appropriate total day nap hours. Babies who take very short naps, or finish all of their naps early in the day, tend to have trouble sleeping at night. That can lead to early wakes. Pay attention to your babys age appropriate awake window. Too large of a awake window between the end of your babys afternoon nap and bedtime can cause early wakes. Promote sleep with a dark room. Having too much light can actually cause your baby to wake up earlier than normal, so be sure that their room is sufficiently dark. Elimate hunger For some younger babies, waking early may be a sign of hunger. Always make sure baby is fed well during the day so that the little body can store as much calories as he can to sleep well at night. Using a dreamfeed can help a younger baby sleep for a longer duration. If your baby is still taking night feeds, then this wont necessarily prevent early morning waking. Maintain the optimal room temperature at 20 degrees If theyre getting cold in the morning, a sleeping bag is less likely to be kicked off than blankets. Time to shorten/cut the nap Too much sleeping in the day can be a cause of early waking. Your toddler might be taking daytime sleep from their night quota. We all have a biological clock and our circadian rhythms can help us sleep if we honor them by getting to bed at the right time. In addition, maintaining a consistent bedtime (and wake time) helps keep our internal clock set and is a critical part of healthy sleep habits.... Inconsistent (and especially too late) bedtimes have been shown to have long-term effects on behavior - and none of them good. So while it is important to have consistency with older children, babies need more flexibility with bedtime. Bedtime should vary depending on the day's naps, activity level of the day, and the previous nightsleep. But what are the best bedtimes by age exactly A bedtime thats too early may result in early-morning waking and short naps, but a too-late bedtime may make your baby overtired, which can lead to a whole host of sleep problems at night. Thats because they like their usual way of getting to sleep and might be upset by change. Be prepared for crying for the first few nights. A good sleep routine means the baby’s body clock has set to certain circadian rhythm where the body knows when to fall asleep. This will make the baby to fall asleep easier and stay asleep in different environment much more easier.... A good predictable yet flexible sleep routine is important for babies over 3 months old where they started to have much more predictable nap patterns and consistent bedtime. 01.01.2022 ARE YOU OK ? Im just checking in how is every mum doing? As a new mother, I had a knack for giving the impression that I didnt need help.... My village lives on the other side of the globe, so it was borne out of necessity, but I wonder if it was more than that. As new (or not so new) mothers, I wonder if we feel as though were letting ourselves down if we show that were vulnerable. Are we falling short if we admit that we simply cant do this alone? Mum may feel guilty for asking for help. She may feel like she should be able to handle this. Heres How to Help A Mother (Especially When She Doesnt Ask) Ask for permission to help New mothers need permission, freedom and space to find their new identity. To wear it proudly and to forge their own path, no matter how long it takes. To change their minds. To try one way of doing things and know its ok to change direction without needing to offer an explanation. Just do it Offer her to bring her a hot chocolate/ a warm meal or suprised her with her favourite meals.Shes beyond sleep deprived, suffering from decision fatigue and doesnt want to feel like a burden, so just do it, without asking. Adjust to and respect her timeframe Let this critical process take place. Let the new mum be with her baby as much as she needs to be. Dont rush her. Notice her Make a big deal of the newborn baby, but remember to notice the new mum. Say hello to her. Shes a mum now, but shes still an individual. Give her a hug. And most importantly, check in with how shes doing. Motherhood is beautiful but brutal; there isnt a new mother on the planet who doesnt need a shoulder to cry on. Remind her how well she is doing In the early days of motherhood there is very little feedback, very little validation. Even though we have no idea what were doing, were somehow getting it perfectly right. So, whenever you see a new mama, tell her what a great job shes doing. Or send her a text. 01.01.2022 Is my baby ready for solids? Starting to feed a baby solid foods is an exciting milestone for parents. However, it comes with a lot of questions and concerns, especially how much to feed and food allergies. Introducing solids too early can cause tummy discomfort eg constipation, the development of allergies and intolerances, reduce intake of breastmilk or formula, distrupt night sleep, multiple night wakes.... You know your baby best, so watch for the following signs that theyre ready. Heres what to look for: The tongue-thrust reflex has gone Babies are interested in what you are eating and try to reach out for it Babies start to put objects in their mouth Babies can sit upright, with support if necessary Their weight gain begin to plateau and they are less statisfied with milk alone Most babies start to show these signs by around six months, but the signs happen at different times for different babies. Its not recommended to introduce solids before four months. Babies differ in their nutrient requirements and energy needs, and can eat a different amount each day depending on their growth and stage of development. The only real way to know if theyre hungry or satisfied is by tuning in and learning to recognise their individual cues. Signs of hunger include your baby: Getting excited when they see you getting their food ready Leaning towards you while theyre sitting in the highchair Opening their mouth as youre about to feed them. Signs your baby is no longer interested include: Turning their head away Losing interest or getting distracted Pushing the spoon away Clamping their mouth shut. If your baby has never slept well, and continues to sleep poorly after the introduction of solids, and this poor sleep is causing your concern. It might be time to have a think about why your baby is not sleeping well. A lot of it is to do with how they get to sleep, and how much help they need from you. Unfortunately, there is not usually a magic bullet that will make the difference, if your baby doesnt have the skills necessary to sleep, solids wont make a lick of difference. Now, feeling pressure to raise your baby’s sleep pressure How can we increase sleep pressure? Aim for age appropriate day time naps. Too much day time nap will decrease sleep pressure at bedtime. Increase darkness of the room to aim sleep quicker and stay asleep longer. White noise is on during sleep period. The more conductive to sleep the atmosphere is, the more sleep pressure will build. Set up a predictable yet flexible nap routine. The awesome thing about this is that once the little one is on a better nap routine, it can really help night sleep as well!! 01.01.2022 How to deal with toddler sleep regressions Your baby is finally a toddler and it seems like your sleep woes are finally over. Not quite! Get ready for the 18-month and two-year sleep regressions The bigger cognitive development that occurs at this age is a combination of limit testing and a second bout of separation anxiety.... Toddlers at this age are learning about actions and consequences. Here are the examples how can a toddler reacts What happens if I yell really loud at bedtime? What happens if I try to climb out of my crib? What happens if I cry louder and will daddy come to rescue me? This limit testing coupled with separation anxiety can lead to some messy bedtimes, naptimes, and even middle of the night times. Since a brief waking will occur at the end of every 2-3 hour sleep cycle through the night, this limit testing/separation anxiety combination can occur all through the night and it can take hours for the child to fall back asleep. So how should we tackle the 18 month sleep regression The key to resolving these issues is consistency and efficiency. I highly recommend keeping bedtime and naptime routines short and sweet, and maintaining a set of boundaries Allow your child to feel in control of bedtime. Limit testing is often a result of a child wanting more control over the events happening in their day-to-day lives. We can give them some of this control while also continuing to set boundaries. Its all about giving your child age-appropriate choices. If your toddler is struggling with falling asleep/staying asleep, avoid creating new bad habits. While it can be hard to hear your toddler protest sleep, letting them sleep in your bed or rocking them to sleep is only going to make this regression harder on them. You dont want to make or continue long-term habits for what should be a short-term phase. While this regression can last weeks, by bringing in bad habits, it can last months or longer. If your toddler is going through or has recently gone through the transition to 1 nap, make sure their sleep routine is age-appropriate by giving early bedtime during the transition to 1 nap. We rocked and bounced the baby endlessly, neither of us resting for more than four or five hours at any given time. Neither my husband nor I function particularly well on very little sleep. 07.11.2021 Here is my three steps guide to bridge naps and how they will help your baby under the age of 6 months! These naps are most commonly used between 3.5- 6 months. A bridge nap will help your baby stay on a predictable schedule - this will help keep wake up and bedtime at the same time each day which allows for consistency and the baby understanding what to expect. This bridge nap should not need to be used every day - if this is occurring, a change in schedule may be needed.... It is only 10-15 minutes max This is a great option for a baby between 4-6 months that may have woken early for the day but needs a short nap to get through to the first nap of the day which helps avoid repetitive early rising. If your bridge nap is going to fall within the hour of the next nap, it may be necessary to pull the next nap slightly forward or offer a bridge nap and push out the start time to the next nap if your baby won't easily stretch that wake window. #babysleepconsultant #babysleeptips #infantsleep #sydneysleepconsultant #babysleepcoach
